Prince won't play glastonbury

The reason for the delay in the announcement of Prince performing at Glasto is the sound check.
At Festivals even if you Headline you have no sound check, the roadies and tech just run through the instruments and lighting EQ.
Prince is one of the most professional and demanding of Artists when it comes to sound checks.IT must be perfect.
Therefore no matter on the money or time on stage this is Princes biggest consederation. the promoters are looking for some else to play

Absolute twaddle!!!

Prince has played festivals before you know?!!! He knows how these things work. And the sound at Glastonbury is top notch anyway!

Last year, they managed to have the full-on, Floyd-esque, quadrophonic sound installed for Roger Water's gig (they installed it before the festival at great cost, of course, for him to be the only person to use it!) and it worked perfectly.

If they can do that, they can certainly accomodate Prince! It is also possible to level-check the instruments without sound from front of house and there is normally a fairly large gap between the penultimate act and the closing act on the main stage, ensuring plenty of time to make sure his show is ready. They also manage to stage a light-show and display back-ddrops according to what the artist would like - this is a professional festival and one of the world's best!

I'm sorry, but this is the most ridiculous excuse I have heard so far for Prince not to play the festival - what the hell is next?? "Prince refuses to play on Pyramid stage because it clashes with his suit!!"???!!!

i really don't think prince is playing glastonbury, he can rarely be bothered to come to england for full on shows do u really think he'd put himself out for a stinking wet mud fest and if he did do u think the type of people who go to glasto would appreciate his music the way we do. i personally hope he doesn't do it!!!

I dunno, how can you effectively challenge ignorance? But, one can try...

For a start, I've seen Prince 35 times in England - where have you been when he's been here?

"Stinking wet mud-fest" - erm, 5 wet Glastonbury Festivals out of 27, you do the math!

"do u think the type of people who go to glasto would appreciate his music the way we do" - you might need to explain that one! What type of people go to Glastonbury?

You've obviously never been (same as EVERY naysayer that there has been on the org who denounces Glast!), so you'll just go on hearsay. And, to be perfectly frank, the way some people around here "appreciate" music, I'd rather the musical snobs didn't go to Glastonbury and ruin the fantastic vibe there! Glastonbury is THE music festival and you will not see a more diverse range of acts anywhere in the world.

So, please, stop talking out of your arse - its unintelligible and smells!

That's ok - but, you see, you would probably upset the 150,000 people (if they read this board) who go to Glast every year by making such pious statements as "do u think the type of people who go to glasto would appreciate his music the way we do" - an opinion that, by your own admission, is not even one borne of experience.

Obviously, you do think it "all looks a bit shit" but, I tell you, there is nothing like the atmosphere and energy created by so many people over such a length of time fuelled by so much great, musical talent. You been to a Prince concert? You know the excitement and exhiliartion that it produces? Well, imagine that a hundred times over! I mean, I just don't get it - you might assume that people who come here are MUSIC lovers - how then can you denounce a celebreation of performing arts?

However, as you rightly state, you are entitled to your opinons, as I am mine. You probably are a nice girl and Glastonbury's probably just too filthy for those nails, but, hey, thanks for you repost too!

the way you describe the problem, it sounds as if you are just guessing and have no idea as to what linechecks or soundchecks actually are. What is 'lighting EQ'?

I've been in a touring band for years and we've played the smallest festivals, i don't think i've ever heard of 'lighting EQ'.

Sound is clearly not the problem. He almost never does soundchecks in aftershows, so I don't think he's bothered by how it'll sound.

I think it was probably just a rumor gone bad.

In response to a couple of you.
I played Glastonbury last year so I do know I'm talking about. Lighting Eq is lighting equipment.

Yeah, ok, not having a great day yesterday, but I'd say more passionate than agressive!

Well, I dunno what the organisation was like in the New Bands tent (where you played last year, right?), but I've played both the Avalon and the Dance tent and each year its been very professional, with none of the issues that you mention. And all the organised chaos is just part of the fun!

I apologise to cammile for my rough treatment of her. Its just, there have been countless negative comments about Prince not playing Glast, 99% of those being from people who haven't even been and most of the reasons given have been somewhat lacking in substance - cammille's comment was just the latest in a long line!

There are also many, many reasons for my being passionate about this festival. Not only is it an integral part of a unique sub-culture that exists in the UK, one that I have been involved with for many years, but I also have had active involvement with the festival for the last few years and a number of friends of mine are crucially involved in the organisation.

On top of that, for me, it would just be fantastic for Prince to play there - I never thought I would see a day when Prince and Glastonbury were mentioned in the same breath - but, here it is! I just hope that, if he's playing, my gig ain't gonna clash!!! That's the only thing to stop me from seeing it!

I just don't agree, percy, that sound is going to be an issue and, as a performer yourself, I'm surprised you feel that way. Perhaps its down to staff - we're lucky enough to have an excellent front-of-house sound engineer, who tweaks the sound constantly through gigs anyway. Roger Waters is well-known as being one of the most fickle and demanding people in music, but they still pulled it off for him!

So, please forgive me if I was somewhat harsh yesterday, we all have our moments!

My Man!!! Yup, we WILL see each other and, schedules permitting, see each other perform!! Wah-hey!

So, you're confirmed? Still waiting on ours, but (and I hope I'm not jinxing anything here!!) we have never been turned down for a Glasto so far!! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Ozrics hold the record for most gigs at Glastonbury!!

Hehe - yup, done the sneaking around the Pyramid backstage. Last year, I only got in to the places I had access to (pretty much any Green Fields area and the Glade area (where I was about 10 feet away from Squarepusher and his laptop!!!) - but did get back in 1999! But this year, hmm, well, wild horses, as they say...!

Look forward to seeing you bro!

Does anybody know when they will announce the line up for Glastonbury?

It sounds too good to be true for Prince to be playing there.

The best site to get rumuoured line-up info is http://www.efestivals.co....bury/2003/ - he's still listed on there as "strong rumour".

The actual, confirmed line-up is not announced until all tickets have sold out, which will probably be end of April/early May.
