Just do what Steve Jobs did in 98.
Take the focus away from the industry, and turn it into the product. Release the product, promote the product, ensure the product satisfies the customer consistently, and eventually the base grows. Be seen as innovative and creative, and never take the focus off the product.
Prince's product is his music. Planet Earth, Lotusflow3r, and 20ten reached millions, but failed to impress. I mean, if you're music is being offered for free in a Newspaper, you make damned sure folks are tripping out on how good it is, so that they'll be willing to PAY for more material. That's how I became a Prince fan. I heard Purple Rain as a kid, went out and bought Parade--loved both, and ended up buying his back catalogue as quickly as I could.
So, what does he have left to accomplish? He needs international notoriety again. He is UNKOWN in Bangkok--one of the largest cities in the world. Madonna, MJ, and even Usher are known--not so with Prince. |
