Man for years i was pissed at myself for not taking care of my copy of Gotta Stop and the other Prince B-sides and extended version records that i owned. Back then(early 80's) i thought records would be around forever and could be easily replaced so i didn't treat them with the care that they deserved.

About 6 months after i brought Let's Work/Gotta Stop, i lost the record and didn't really hear GS again until it was released on the Hits, B-side collection. Off and on for years i searched for Gotta Stop but could never find it.

As for the song, i love everything about it. I love the freaky singing and lyrics, the punkish-rockabilly(?) sounding guitar and the New Wave keyboards. Even when it was first released i thought that for a black artist to make a song that sounded the way Gotta Stop sounded, that shit was cool as heck.

Ive always said that i think the Prince /Minneapolis sound camp did some of the best New Wave sounding songs of the 80's. You had the individual Prince stuff, the Vanity 6 stuff, Time songs like After High School and One day I'm gonna be Somebody, the Andre Cymone stuff, Dez Dickerson 'Modernaires, Jesse Johnson's first album and even solo Morris Day songs like The Character.

New Wave was all up in that early Minneapolis Sound.
