exodus said: Bonnie's is not the Original version of this song. The song Was first recorded by the song writer "Mike Reid" on his album "twilight town". So hers was a remake as well.
Thanks - I always wondered if the writers had just given it to Bonnie.[This message was edited Tue Mar 11 18:25:49 PST 2003 by exodus] ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

After all this talk, I picked up Bonnie's Luck of the Draw album today, listening to the song now. I think I like the music better in Bonnie's version, the vocal delivery better in Princes.
The music in Bonnie's is more simple, organic, lends better to the emotional content of the song. Whereas Prince was in that "canned" phase w/ the music/instrumentation during that whole Emancipation period (which is why the Somebody's Somebody live studio mix is SUCH a treat IMO), it doesn't support the song as well as it could. It could still be big (the layered vocals on the chorus, thunderous drums, etc) it just deserves to be done right. That said, Prince would KILL this live... or redone using live instruments - can you imagine him doing this song in his current phase??? His delivery is really great, I like the way he sticks to the melody & carries it out. Bonnie kinda goes off here & there which is cool, I just like his flow better. In the end (as if anyone cares) I dig them both , P's version is definitely credible. I have yet to hear George Michael's version... . IAM said: i think where he fucks it up is when he starts with all the silly sex talk. it lost all sense. surely he could've done without it.
But it goes along w/ what jtgillia was saying about Prince making the song his own. By exposing his sexual desires even more intimately... I need you to kiss me ... it's even more crushing in the end when that love is nowhere to be found. The song itself is about "make love to me this last time, let me pretend, I know you don't love me" so sex talk is fitting IMO. Not exactly neccessary, but fitting (we're talking Prince here, lol). Can you imagine being so in love, so desperate for a last chance @ that person's love that you offer yourself so openly KNOWING you'll be turned away? Needing someone so much you'll beg for their mercy as a substitute for genuine feeling/love? Good GOD, bless the writer of this song - what a vat of emotions to share w/ the world... Beautiful

Beautiful agreed. not neccessary but fitting ONLY if you're looking at it as " We are talking Prince here ". BUT think about it. listen to what a disguting mess Mariah made out of "the beautiful ones". one could justify her butchery as "We are talking Mariah". it really still doesn't justify it. especially for someone like the ever hypocritical P who has such a cow when other people cover his music. he says "if it's covering it live, that's cool." so why can't he walk the talk? personally i think his live covers are killer anyway. i haven't heard one i didn't appreciate really.

Well maybe I'm being an overly enthusiastic Prince fan, LOL, but I do think his version & all it's lyrical content is respectable. I wouldn't dare put it in a category w/ Mariah's "Beautiful Ones" remake...
