Chances Prince Pulls Out of Billboard Icon Performance?

Back in January when the Billboard issue with Prince hit stands, he said that he PLANNED to attend the Carnegie Hall Tribute only to not show up, there was a lot of back and forth speculation about whether Prince would perform at the BET Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. If Prince doesn't have a hand in the planning of the Icon performance/tribute, I can imagine him staying in Paisley Park.

Why?

I mean, why does everybody else needs to adjust their planning to Prince's?

I think it's an important event that is an opportunity to exposure for Prince.

Why would he make life difficult when there is no reason to so?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

The Billboard are a much more formal thing, I think he will show, unless he is really sick, he will want the chance to show off the new band and pull off a few surprises for everyone.
After his ovation at the Grammys for just walking on the stage, why would he miss out on a chance to perform?

Prince is not really that flaky when it comes to performing. He's pulled out of a few shows obviously, but he's showed up to far more.

What, the criticism/negative comments for smashing someone else's guitar and not apologising or replacing it ( to the public's knowledge anyway)?

Yes.

And would make a joke about it when I was there.

It was intended as a tribute, so many looked forward to the joy of giving that gift to Prince.

Why would he spoil their fun (4 love of Prince) over a personal feud?

It was later reported that Prince did pay for the guitar to be fixed, snd the Carnegie event is over, so both are pretty much water under the bridge now. Maybe it is best people just chill and not create all kinds of speculation, based on their imaginary fears, on whether or not he shows up for the Billboards. How about just doing a 'wait and see' and let the Billboard event happen first?

You've said this before...

I don't know why you continue to say that it was a joke.

YOU WERE NOT THERE (I asked you, remember? You said you wished you were)
I was there, so I'm not sure where you got this assumption that the songs were ruined.
I was very impressed with how the acts paid tribute to Prince by putting their own unique talents to each song. Even the comedians played a significant role.

To borrow a gesture: rolleyes

Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

What the **** is your problem? You wasn't there to see the show, and to insult the musicians/artists who were there, and the young students who performed, because of the love of Prince's music, was not a joke. You wasn't there, so stop throwing stones and making up bullsh*t to satisfy your obsession.

You do not know why Prince chose not to show up. None of us do, so why not just leave it at that, instead of accusing people with your fantasized bs. You should know by now that the press will always be the press and often times, tend to sensationalize situations involving celebrities, to sell a story or to attract readers to their sites.

You shouldn't believe everything you read in the press, and I thought you were smarter than that. Stop insulting the musicians who were there. Regardless of the situation with the guitar, no one said it was right, but it happened, and apparently the guy's guitar was taken care of by the person who caused some damage to it. Despite what happened to his guitar, he continued to be part of the Prince tribute, Roots house band at Carnegie, so apparently 'he's over it', maybe you should think about doing the same. Just let it go already, because the Carnegie show has nothing to do with the upcoming Billboard event.

Eye was just giving a reason why he may not have showed up after saying he would attend. Like the original person that started the thread mentioned as if Prince was wishy washy . Usually if Prince says he is attending an event he shows up. Eye think the reason Eye gave was a valid reason 4 him not showing up. As 4 me calling the tribute a joke. I didn't call the tribute a joke. Eye said "someone" turned his "MasterPieces" in2 a joke not mentioning a name.

But Eye do apologize since Eye wasn't there if Eye offended anyone that attended please accept my wholeheartedness 4giveness......

Bilai's version of "Annie Christian" was incredible & Eye would have loved 2 seen it in person..

The point is, none of those musicians/artists ruined Prince's original versions of any of the songs that were sung at that tribute. Prince will always be the creator of his original songs and no one, regardless of who covers/sings those originals in a different version, still can't take anything away from Prince, so what's your problem accusing them of ruining his songs? They didn't, they just put a different take on it, mainly their own versions, so the originals stay as they are and will go down in history with Prince.

The fact that he did not show up is his business, even if many were hoping that he would attend. Things happen and so what's done is done, so everytime someone brings up Carnegie here, there's no reason for you to jump all over them with your fantasized reasons as to why Prince decided to not attend, and you don't even know the man personally to know the reason why, no more than the rest of us.

If the musicians/artists who showed up and performed at that tribute had any real malice towards Prince, they would not have made the decision to be part of it, whether they assumed/hoped he would show up or not. People don't attend tributes of others they don't like, so that proves, they showed up because of the respect and love they have for his music. So for you to continuously accuse them of ruining his mastarpieces,as you call it, again, no matter how many times or versions anyone sings of his songs, the bottom line is that they will always be Prince's songs, so what's your problem with that?

Whatever transpired between any of the former band members and Prince is between them and Prince, no matter how the fans, including myself, give our opinions or speculations about those relationships/friendships, because at the end of the day, our opinions are just that...opinions, nothing written in stone or gold.

Just appreciate the fact that there are many out there that love the music of Prince and that's why they listen to it, sing it, buy it, relate their memories to his songs, and at the end of the day enjoy it. The young students who sang 'Raspberry Beret' did not ruin his song, and it was cool to see young people that young, pay tribute to him singing one of his songs. Also, Bilal did a great job with singing Prince's song 'Sister', as well as Bhi Bhiman singing Prince's 'When Doves Cry', and all the other musicians/artists that showed up and did their part. So again, those songs will always be Prince's songs, regardless of who is singing it.

With that being said, I doubt any of the musicians/artists and those who attended the Carnegie tribute, stole anything from your life. That is all.

Agreed.

True artist appreciate him more than maybe he himself realizes. All the speculation to motives to me is child's play. It takes away from honoring his artistry , which to me is what it was all about. Nothing more or less.

I think it is a wonderful thing to watch young and old honoring His masterpieces in their own unique expression and interpretation. We all know No one can even try to duplicate The originator and that's not what honoring is.

Celebrating the gift of the originators body of work thus far through another ones own expression is a beautiful thing!

And when u have a body of work like Prince or Stevie etc...It's cool to see the expressions of thanks and love for the gift. Especially within the youth of this generation! Lord knows they r starved the most for true musicianship!

Depite what happened to his guitar, he continued to be part of the Prince tribute, Roots house band at Carnegie, so apparently 'he's over it', maybe you should think about doing the same.

The Billboard are a much more formal thing, I think he will show, unless he is really sick, he will want the chance to show off the new band and pull off a few surprises for everyone. After his ovation at the Grammys for just walking on the stage, why would he miss out on a chance to perform?

I highly doubt it, although I think he should.

He'll most likely perform with the full NPG and probably without any guitar, like he did at SXSW.

What would I like to see/hear?

Both. If it's just two songs, one with 3rdeyegirl, and one with 3rdeyegirl+NPG... keeping his current look - afro and funky rock threads, and playing guitar, bass and keys... possibly also drums.

Show 'em who's Boss, P.

Just sayin'.

Back in January when the Billboard issue with Prince hit stands, he said that he PLANNED to attend the Carnegie Hall Tribute only to not show up, there was a lot of back and forth speculation about whether Prince would perform at the BET Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. If Prince doesn't have a hand in the planning of the Icon performance/tribute, I can imagine him staying in Paisley Park.

rolleyes

Have U completely 4gotten what happen prior 2 the Carnegie Hall Tribute? Why would he show up after being torn apart 2 shreads?

[Edited 4/26/13 20:57pm]

Agreed. Of course he won't show up under those circumstances. Most of key figures involved in this event should know him well enough to know that. Like it or not. Prince is more take it or leave it.

The wooh is on the one!

Yey Giovanni, I like that 'afro and funk' phrase...'Afrofunk'

I saw the advertisement for the Billboard Awards on TV last night, and they showed a pic of Prince, and said, 'Performance by Prince'. So looks like he will be there. I also saw a vid a few weeks ago, where Shelby J was interviewed at that Atlanta show a couple of weeks ago, and she mentioned to the interviewer something like (paraphrasing) She " ...may be performing at the Billboards with Prince and the NPG" She didn't say definitely, just said "may", so you just never know what bandmembers he may decide to bring for that performance.

Just to add, I wish some folks would get over that he didn't show up for Carnegie. Carnegie is over and done with, yet the same person keeps obsessing why he thinks he knows why Prince didn't show up, as though he had a personal conversation with Prince to know why Prince chose not to attend. Hilarious.

About the same chance obuma has at being re-elected for a 3rd term as president. A BIG FAT ZERO.
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.
