Fan's common senses you stand differently from

Let's plat a game!

Not many games here these days!

I like them...

Are there fans' common senses you stand apart from?

These are mine (I may change my mind some day, but now these are my points):

1. I think For you is a very weak and naive album, only real good song is Soft and wet, some songs are terrible, especially In Love and Just as long as we're together, these two are very avarage/ordinary songs for Prince standards. His golden period starts from his second album, not the first...

2. ...And this golden period (of consecutive classic albums) ends with Batman, not Lovesexy. Even though I think Batdance is a senseless mix of many songs and Arms of Orion is kind of tacky, I think Batman is a classic, very underrated. Vicki Waiting is one of his best songs ever and one of the most underrated, for instance. (And I love Lemon crush, dont get the criticism it gets).

3. I think both fan favorite's Do me baby and Adore have waaaay overdone vocals, in the album versions at least. I like both songs, but the vocal performance is too over the top for me, and gets me off of the songs very often when I listen to them.

4. Sometimes it snows in April... the one song on Parade I never could dig... Too slow, too lifeless and kind of tacky too. Never moved me.

5. I think Rainbow children is a good album, but both very far from the Classic and the Terrible album most fans think of it.

6. I think Musicology is not as bad as it gets criticised for by fans these days. It's a very good album, far from being a classic, but very good. Ilusion, Coma, Pimp and Circunstance is his best 00s song for me.

7. People who have long thrown Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic in the trash are missing a gem for very long: Eye luv u but eye don't trust u anymore, one of his best ballads, and worthy of a 80s classic album. (Pretty Man is very good too).

8. Let's go crazy is a good song for me, but not a classic. I find it exciting, but not as much as the majority. If I was P, I'd have played it live a lot less over the years, and replace it with more exciting rock songs. (Maybe it lacks a more "hook" melodical chorus)

9. Sign o the times is one of the best albums ever made. It never ceases to amaze. But somehow, I can't change my mind that both Hot thing and Slow love are very weaker and unworthy from the rest of it. They should be on the vault, so that the album would benefit a lot from it.

10. I don't agree with the good number of fans that say he's lost his creativity some time in his carreer. Some say after Lovesexy, others after he left Warner. He may not have released any classic album in years, but he's still, today, the best artist in rnb music. And the classic songs never stoped to appear in any time.

11. I strongly disagree with people that disdain his post-00 production. There may not be a classic album (although I think Lotusflower got near), but there's such a great amount of wonderful songs from the 00s on, that I just can't belive people can disdain this whole period. I think it's more prejudice that keeps them from really paying attention than true dislike.

12. A lot of people say that Take me with you is a bad song. I strongly disagree. Love it. Just don't get the criticism.

What are your contrasting standpoints from fans' most common senses?

Now that is something that is funny lol I should apolgize to Brazilian and I will, I'm sorry Brazillian. Everyone has a right to their opinion and I should respect that. Please forgive me for being an ass and please forgive the pun, but I do like oats. I think maybe reading Thorne's book has got me a little on edge lately, so again please forgive me.

how can you think that 'sometimes it snows in april' is tacky? eek

it's so understated, stripped down, heartfelt and gorgeous.

given the task to name some tacky prince songs, this would

literally be one of the last songs in his entire catalogue that

would come to my mind.

Okay, I apologize U. I didnt mean to be a pain in the ass, but these "games" appear from time to time in the org and I LIKE THEM. I think it's a good pastime, like cross-words, and I like to exchange my impressions with other fans. For me, there should be a lot of pools in the org and they should be very organized so as to know fan's opinions and thoughts on Prince's music in many aspects. It's just something I like, if you don't, write on other threads.

Okay, let's play.

1. I bought For You in 1985 and think "Just As Long As We're Together" is top notch. There is not a bad song on the album.

2. You say his golden period ended with Batman, but Graffit Bridge is 10 times better, so still Lovesexy ends the truly great run.

3. Do Me Baby and Adore are great BECAUSE of the vocals not in spite of them.

4. Sometimes it Snows In April you don't like? You love Vicki Waiting but not this one? To each his own I reckon.

5. Rainbow Childen...you say,"far from the classic and terrible." Which one is it? If all the theology doesn't bug you, then it's classic because the music is fantastic.

6. You like Musicology and I do too. I saw the show in Indianapolis and it was great.

7. Rave is a hit and miss and I do like "I love you but I don't trust..." But, Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic is a better album imo.

8. You don't think "Let's Go Crazy" is a classic? Have you heard the 12 inch version? If you don't like that, then it's hard to figure out how you're a Prince fan.

9. You're right that Sign 'O The Times is one the best albums ever, but mabye Hot Thing could have been replaced with a better tune, Slow Love is great (didn't someone else write this?)

10. I agree that he never lost his creativity because like Willie Nelson, he says that the songs are there just waiting to be recorded.

11. About his 00's, I think he changed a bit in his vocals like on Dreamer. If he'd sung like he sung America, it would better I think. But he does need a Wendy and Lisa type around him to make the latter songs better.

12. I agree that Take Me With You is a great tune.

Some things I differ with most.

1. Although most ppl love "7" I can't stand it. Never did.

2. I hate most of Diamonds and Pearls save "Money don't matter 2night" and "Gett Off"

3. Never liked Peach.

4. Things like "Power Fantastic" I could without.

5. I love the Emancipation album.

6. Don't really care for his jazz stuff like C-Note, Xpectation or News too much.

7. 3121 is a great album.

8. Really liking the 3rdeyegirl stuff a lot.

how can u criticize SISIA (April) for being slow and lifeless and then love ILUBIDTUA (Trust...) which is in the same vein and tempo. it's called understatement, stripped down, heartfelt vocals, I like them both. Just seemed very inconsitent on ur part

Maybe. But Eye Luv U has this bitter hearfelt vocal performance which is one of my favorite vocal styles from Prince (like How come u dont call me anymore? and The beautiful ones for instance). And the lyrics theme is genius and touching. Sometimes it snows in April is maybe the one acclaimed song which's coin never dropped in for me (I dont know if that expression, which we use in Portuguese translates well). Maybe I'll get it someday.

I think maybe if you'd heard that track when it was released you would have a different opinion. The Parade album came out before the movie and to hear that Tracey (Prince) dies was moving. And when he does it just with the piano is very different. And I think that this is about the time his vocals were the best. He could cough and it sounded like Beethoven. The progression from For You to now is half the battle in terms of understanding and liking his music. But I love "The Grand Progression" so what do I know?

1. I bought For You in 1985 and think "Just As Long As We're Together" is top notch. There is not a bad song on the album.

We'll have to agree to disagree on For You. I think he was very immature music-wise and in the theme of the lyrics.

2. You say his golden period ended with Batman, but Graffit Bridge is 10 times better, so still Lovesexy ends the truly great run.
I like Graffiti Bridge, Thieves in the temple, The question of u and of course Joy in repetition are top notch classics, but I think it can't be better than Batman (of which I love all songs except Batdance and Arms of Orion), for 5 reasons: Release it, Round and round, Tick tick bang (the original version is way better), The latest fashion and (mainly, the HORRIBLE) Shake.

5. Rainbow Childen...you say,"far from the classic and terrible." Which one is it? If all the theology doesn't bug you, then it's classic because the music is fantastic.

I havent read the lyrics. I must read the lyrics to get it completely, I dont understand them 100% from listening. Being an Atheist, some very archaic religious discourse is very likely to shock me. But musically, I think the album is good, but far from the classic and also from the terrible it is usuallly classified as by the majority of fans.

6. You like Musicology and I do too. I saw the show in Indianapolis and it was great.

Prince just came to Brazil in 1992. And never again. Never got to see him. But it's my promise to see at least 200 shows of him before Im dead.

8. You don't think "Let's Go Crazy" is a classic? Have you heard the 12 inch version? If you don't like that, then it's hard to figure out how you're a Prince fan.

Whenever I watch a show and he opens with Let's go crazy, which happens very often, I wait to get really excited by the second song. I dont mean I dont like it, it's good, still I made a 100 favorite song list recently and it didnt manage to get in.

9. You're right that Sign 'O The Times is one the best albums ever, but mabye Hot Thing could have been replaced with a better tune, Slow Love is great (didn't someone else write this?)

I think they both should have been replaced or removed, for the sake of the other classic songs.

11. About his 00's, I think he changed a bit in his vocals like on Dreamer. If he'd sung like he sung America, it would better I think. But he does need a Wendy and Lisa type around him to make the latter songs better.

Maybe, but Somewhere here on Earth, Future baby mama, She loves me 4 me, Mellow, Sticky like glue, Sea of everything, When eye lay my hands on you, all can stand as some of his best vocal performances. Don't think he's lost the ability to deliver great vocals, contrary to many other veterans when their carreers get decades old.

Some things I differ with most.

2. I hate most of Diamonds and Pearls save "Money don't matter 2night" and "Gett Off"

I like the album. But Walk dont walk, Jughead and Push all miss the mark. You don't like Strollin'? I think it's gorgeous!
4. Things like "Power Fantastic" I could without.

What else is like Power Fantastic? Anyway, I like that song a lot.

5. I love the Emancipation album.

I do too, but it could do good use of a radical cut. To one album, maybe. Just the best songs.

7. 3121 is a great album.

I like it a lot, but half of it. I think it's inconsistent, great songs together with weak and bad songs. Te amo corazón, Fury and Black sweat are great. My main problem with it, I guess, since Jughead is more of a Tony M song than Prince's, is that it contains his carreer-winning worst song, Incense and Candles. I find it horrible.

8. Really liking the 3rdeyegirl stuff a lot.

More or less. I liked Breakfast can wait and some other two. The main ones, Screwdriver and Rock and roll love affair, I found rather weak songs.

I agree about games and that is why I posted one (pick one per half decade game). I am so grateful to be a fan of someone with enough material to do such things. So here is where I think I differ from "most fans".

.

1. Condition of the <3. You don't even know. This is the best thing from 1985 ever. Bar none. To me. Listen again if you don't believe me LOL.

.

2. His (former) lyrical obsession with virginity creeps me out. As a poet, I notice patterns of diction, and he mentions it a lot. It makes me wonder if all men obsess about this, or he is just a wierdo. So it is hard for me to listen to the following: I'm Yours, Jack U Off, Adore, 2 the 9s (jailbait?!?!) I wanna melt with you, Shy. My exception to this rule is Bambi, probably because I saw it live the other day. I mean "Need to bleed!?!?" WTF not cool. Just why. I find it unbalanced with him getting "5 Women". So the girls are preferably virgins, but men can whore around. It's misogynistic. Glad he backed off but its probably due to maturity.

.

3. I tend to believe that people who don't like Sometimes it Snows in April, just don't know how to interperet the song razz April means dying when you aren't supposed to. Just like a May/December relationship means older person/ younger person relationship. April means dying way too young. How could you not be touched? Love this. I cry everytime for my loved ones.

.

4. I disagree that he lost creativity also. No way. He needs to make music as often as it comes to him. He seems to have to do it or die. I think he forgets to eat sometimes do to productivity. There is probably some of the best stuff we have never heard in the vault. I believe he will literally never retire from music (even if he were to anonce it he would still be making music privately). Something will be recorded even on the last day of his life. Unless in a coma or something.

.

5. I love RAVE this was my first new album since discovering him, I was 14 when I got it, having discovered him for myself at 12 with Purple Rain (I snuck into my dad's stash). I had to work really hard on my chores so my parents would get Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastc for me. It was to me what 1999 was to my dad actually! Strange But True.

.

6. I want Prince to have new young fans. I want 14 year olds accross America to discover him (and sometimes I wonder if Prince impedes this with some of his internet issues). People were listening to NsYNC and Backstreet Boys when I was in Highschool and looked at ME sideways because I listened to Prince. WHo's laughing now? I want there to be weird kids in Highschool right now who get weird looks from "Beliebers". smile Perserverence. Music WIN.

.

7. There should be a Prince internet meme. You know. like the Lazy College Senior, or the Me Gusta, or the Y U No?? He is so suited for a meme.

.

8. 3rd Eye Girl is like his 6 groups, except, you know, EMPOWERING to women, not condescending.

[Edited 4/25/13 0:19am]

It is called soul singing and it is perfect on these two cuts. They still make the slow jam and quiet storm formats to this day.

1. I hate For You. It is THE only Prince album I have yet to get through. Soft & Wet is ok, but nothing near the classic people make it out to be.

2. I don't think 1999 is the all that album people make it out to be. Its very good, and its the album that made me a fan back in 83. But I barely listen to it anymore. It has always had a coldness about it that hasn't aged well imo.

3. I have loved Purple Rain album since the first day I listened to it and still do. Unlike 1999 I can still listen to it and enjoy. Every song is awesome and it flows oh so well. If anything I just wish the long versions of LGC and Computer Blue were on there. BUt as it is, it deserves to be the one he is known for. It incorporates everything that he is about in a very accessible way.

4. His golden years started with the Prince album and ended with the Black Album. I don't understand the why people are so nuts about Lovesexy. Its ok...and I LOVE Anna Stesia, but overall it is a let down from the hugeness of Sign and the fun, funky Black Album. I was SO disappointed when it came out...and that was a first. I did learn to warm up to it over the years, but it never matched his past brilliance imo.

5. Take out the non-Prince songs and that horrid title track and Graffiti Bridge is stronger than Lovesexy. Nothing on Lovesexy comes close to the brilliance of Joy in Repetition, Question of U, Thieves in the Temple, Elephants & Flowers, or Still Would Stand All Time.

6. The Symbol album sucks monkey balls. The album, the songs, the look, Tony M, Mayte, Kirstie Ally, no Rosie...the whole thing blows (except for 7 and God Created Woman). the thing is just obnoxious.

7. New Power Soul is a decent album. Never understood the flack it gets.

8. Musicology is a great album. From beginning to end I like it...even Life o the party is listenable imo. Never get why people crap on it so much.

9. None of his bands have come close to the brilliance he created with Wendy, Lisa, Susannah, Sheila, and Eric Leeds. He was at the top of his game when these people were in the mix and think they helped him expand his creativity like no other collaborator before or since.

10. Given number 9, I like 3rd Eye Girl A LOT and like the energy they are bringing into the mix. Hannah esp is a breath of fresh air!

11. Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic is an awesome tune...right up there with any of his 80s songs.

12. The Vault: Old Friends for Sale is one great collection of songs. When The Lights Go Down has grown to be my fave song of the 90s from him. But the whole disc is very enjoyable. This one gets more play than anything else from that era.

That's because it is an 80's song.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I cant agree with you on 1999 which I think is really a classic and on Lovesexy which I particulary love too. But I agree with you, of course, on For you, as I have already said similar before, and your #12 standpoint. The Vault... is a great album. It has his most bluesy song collection, in an old classic style, some songs with a great jazz touch too. 5 Women reminds me of an Al Green song and is SO great. She spoke 2 me and When the lights go down both have a great jazzy touch, wonderful solos, in the vein of bebop. My little pill is a gorgeous little experimental piece, like that ones from Parade (I wonder u, Life can be so nice, New position). And There is lonely is one os his most dark and moody songs, very beautiful. I prefer the 86 version of the title track, one of my favorite songs of him, but anyway, with reworked lyrics, it's there too. My father has a more conservative rock music taste, he likes about everything from 60-70s rock, some blues and a little rnb. He doesnt get Prince, but The Vault... was an album he liked very much.

Be careful, i once made a thread with the heading, "Prince's voice sucks...on For You" and i got chewed the fuck out. I almost didn't make it.

Even though what you're saying about For You is what i was getting at, i went about it in the wrong way. Your thread is a lot smarter than mine was though.

Yes, but I meant not just what may be on the vault, I think every year virtually has a great Prince song. I love his 00s and 90s production. There were not as many classic albums as there were in the 80s, but there are dozens of wonderful songs, Prince has always stayed among the top creative artists from the begining of his carreer til now. In 2007, how many wonderful songs like Somewhere here on Earth were released? Or like Eye luv u but eye dont trust u anymore in 1999? Many songs were easily among the very best released each year.

It's very cool that your parents are also Prince fans!!

Music WIN.

Yes, I find this internet issue a pain in the ass, and it stops him from being known to potential new fans. He may stand against the recording industry, but the internet is a free territory, he could have found a great alternative for publishing his music widely in his own terms. Sites like youtube started from nothing. I know it's an outstanding case, but Prince could've found his own alternative. I think that, being able to hear his music, there would be millions of new fans. His work is diverse and high quality enough to appeal to a vast range of music interests. No wonder why Prince is so high regarded by rock, rnb, pop and even jazz musicians. People who know music tend to appreciate him.

Lana Del Rey's album was the FOURTH best selling album worldwide last year, and she started from 0, then became a youtube phenomenon that made videos with a webcam to her songs.

7. There should be a Prince internet meme. You know. like the Lazy College Senior, or the Me Gusta, or the Y U No?? He is so suited for a meme.

Yes, very suitable!! It could be created here in the org.
