seven...7...song is a motherfu**** classic

I have always loved 7...

musically and lyrically its incredible.

his song writing and imagery is incredible here ............

im amazed this charted highly as it seemed to my lil ol ears far too complex for the average top 40 cat

mind putting that logic into action would mean Prince should never have had a hit

And I saw an angel come down unto meIn her hand she holds the very keyWords of compassion, words of peaceAnd in the distance an army's marching feetBut behold, we will watch them fall
And we lay down on the sand of the seaAnd before us animosity will stand and decreeThat we speak not of love only blasphemyAnd in the distance, 6 others will curse meBut that's alright for I will watch them fall1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

This was one of the last songs from Prince that made it onto heavy rotation on the radio. Everyone I know - even those who aren't really Prince fans - love this song.

I never really gave "7" a fair chance until one of my co-workers said it was their favorite Prince song. I'm glad we had that conversation because it has since become an essential Prince track in my listening experience. I love the imagery the lyrics paint.

Call My Name was in heavy rotation!!. I did not like it at first but hearing in concert over the years it really grew on me and audiences really like it.

The Most Beautiful Girl and Musicology were also in heavy rotation...

I remember being surprised in 1993 at Wembley Stadium when it seemed like everyone was singing along to the chorus to this cool I seem to recall Prince letting us get on with it as he strummed away on his electro acoustic lol

Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

7 is timeless above all else. It's an incredible track. Artists have made entire careers with lesser songs than this. It would have made him a one hit wonder if that's all he ever released.

Great song...the muti-tracked voices are brilliant....the music is exotic but sounded so current when it was on the radio....it does not seem dated at all even though it is two decades old. Sure the lyrics are a little bit of a religious jumbalaya, but there is no other artist who can take a song as plain old koo koo as 7 was and is and not only pull it off but make it a big hit. Briliant and one of his top 5-10 songs in my opinion.

All good things they say never last...

Because there needs to be a hater in every appreciation thread: I've always wondered how 7 made it onto the radio. It's overproduced and cheesy with an obnoxious sing-song melody. Then again, so is the entirety of prince.

what i hate most is DUMB hate...

you may not like 7 ....but cheesy??

"over"produced...so you dig the accoustic version but CHEESY???

it has to be one of THE most UNcheesy songs ever put to wax....

please please explain your definition of cheesy...

Definition of cheesy

adjective (cheesier, cheesiest)

  • 1like cheese in taste, smell, or consistency:a pungent, cheesy sauce
  • 2 informal cheap and of low quality:cheesy motel rooms
  • hackneyed and obviously sentimental:an album of cheesy pop hits
  • (of a smile) exaggerated and likely to be insincere:a cheesy grin

People have used that word in weird contexts lately. My guess is that people just don't know what the word means anymore.

It's funny because it's been used on this site to describe songs that are obvious attempts to move away from the type of banal and overly sentimental stuff the word typically refers to. Maybe people mean just "pretentious" when they use that word?

"7" is a quirky and unique pop song.

I don't believe chart position truly measured the impact this song had on the listening public. Everyone knows AND likes this song, and should still be played as much as his 80s hits are.

I've done "7" at karaoke and the entire bar starts singing along. It's very popular even among casual fans and non fans.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
