Was the Batman score by Danny Elfman released BEFORE the Prince album?

I'm asking because Wikipedia says it's from May 1989, which would mean that the tracks Love Theme and Finale, which contain parts of Scandalous would have been the actual first release of Scandalous, under a "rerecorded" form.

If that's factual, then these tracks should be included on my Prince discography as well as on Princevault: technically the fact that Prince released his own versions of 5 Women and Van Gogh after Joe Cocker and Van Gogh released their "rerecorded" versions don't make such versions out-of-discographies, since they were at the time the only available, Prince approved versions.

So I'd like to ask those who were fans at the time, do you remember whether the score was released before or after the soundtrack?

Thanks biggrin

iirc, Danny Elfman's score was released after Prince's soundtrack, but, I'm not positive.

I do remember Elfman was pissed about the Prince soundtrack and let it be known in the press.

What was he mad about?

The press making a big deal about Prince doing the soundtrack for Batman, but not much mention of his score. His press was greatly overshadowed, he got cranky...

Didn't know that but if so: Elfman had every right to be pissed, because his score was the real deal, it actually was a masterpiece!

All the more reason for him not to bitch. The two soundtracks both served their purpose.

Prince stole the show because of his big name associated with the Batman hype, not because of the extraordinary quality of his work.

So we got 2 sources saying May. One release on Discogs says October but it's a European release + I seem to remember that it was already out in France in September when the movie got released. Any other memories from someone?

I remember this.
There was a T.V. interview, and Elfman did not have kind words.
Apparently he had been working on the soundtrack for a long time, and according to him, Prince came spent a few short weeks throwing stuff together, and WB labeled it the "soundtrack" to the movie.

I really don't care for Prince's album, but found Elfman's score boring too.

Plus, you know, pop songs vs. instrumental background music.

Orchestral scores never make big noise in the medias anyway, I don't understand what Elfman was mad about.

I thought Elfman's part was called The Original Motion Picture Musical Score of the Batman film not the soundtrack. That is a big difference....

Elfman was pissed when Rolling Stone did an article titled "Prince Scores Batman Film",talking about the upcoming Prince soundtrack.
