It's all about context. For this series of shows, the reworkings of the songs fit the overall mood: rocky, moody, and sexy rawness. These sound boards recordings are giving you a very limited picture of the sound as they are recordings of the sound traveling through mics, but you're not really getting a good sense of the space of hearind them out of the amps coupled with the acoustics of the setting and hearing the mix from the audience perspective who is facing all of the amps, and is not just listening to whatever amp was mic'd. Hey GuyBros, I'm glad you had such a cool time at the show/s!
I have seen P many many times live since 86 so I'm defo not one for sheen and note for note re-productions of recorded songs!

I love how P plays with his own song live and he has amazed me with colourful, imaginative re-workings of songs (or parts thereof) tour after tour.

I also get how this band n tour are more rock, raw feel based - all I am questioning is whether slowing down faster tracks and repeatedly yearning a certain word is becoming a bit of a formula for him? Perhaps he saw the positive feedback when he first did it with LRC and so wants to replicate it? That's cool but should a re-working still not fit the song and maintain its integrity?

I'm just wondering how clever or imaginative it is.. as some people are saying it is.

Maybe I'm looking forward to hearing a techno / thrash-metal version of Still Would Stand All Time with P shouting STAND in a rapid-fire fashion? (I'm joking!)

Certainly not questioning that he is still the MAN to see live and hope I get to enjoy the experience, as you are, over here in the UK. Of course, as you say, you can't get a full appreciation without being there - particularly from just a snippet.

Although I really enjoyed Prince's slowed down version of LRC in concert, I have to question all of these recent re-workings of old classics. Has Prince run out of gas? Does he have to rely on re-workings for lack of inspiration? Or is he doubtful about his recent offerings? I would like to see fearless Prince again in concert, offering new songs whatever the response is. We may never see that again... confused

MMM - maybe purple thunder but I hope not.
It's still good to hear such familiar songs (as well as new ones) and it's good for him and regular fans to hear fresh versions - if creative and still maintains the integrity of the song. For me it is this particular repeated pattern of just slowing down that i'm not feeling - but I've not seen / heard them first hand.
Maybe he's really excited about the 3EG thing and is "going for it" quickly ... Without lots if time to think how best something could be changed up ?? Just speculating - time will tell us !

No no, I feel you. Sorry about the phrasing. I meant "you" as an general statement for people, not a specific "you want to hear it played this way." My bad.

Again, trust me, I don't dick-ride the guy and am not from the school of the guy can do no wrong. Not in the least.

With that being said, I don't know how original it is for him to approach this concept this way, but to me, that doesn't matter in this instance.

That a piece of art isn't groundbreaking or without reference doesn't necessarily make it any better or worse in my humble opinion than one which has easily identified references.

In addition, Chuck Berry can play the same 2 chords over and over again, and that shit might not be clever, be it'll be rocking. That's my thoughts here about the show. Sometimes less is more.

But I would not call this experience less at all. Different, absolutely. Less?

If you're looking for "fearless" Prince, it's now. Haven't seen this man crowd surf ever before or shake and hold (as in pulling people) so many ever before, or at least have heard about. I don't know how his decision to rework his own songs and create a very specific vibe would qualify as fearful, but I think for many of us who attended would describe his performance as anything but.

I don't mind but the original is perfect. Perfect the way it is. One of his best b-sides that only his core fans know. It's a shame that they don't have a way to get more love for "She's Always in My Hair"Always love this song studio/live but it is original perfection.

ok, AND NOW follow the drummer for a minute.... AND you'll know what's missing! Attention: 0 Groove! It's quite shocking that Prince is working with her if I listen to that snippet. Of course she's a nice person and all that. maybe she had to take a break after Endorphinem, Screwdriver, I like it there, Guitar...... dunno?

she is the weakest link, I agree with you. But saw all 4 shows and she did not take away from the awesome guitar frenzy that they were. So incredible these shows!!!

For sure! LIVE this must be a GREAT experience! and i'm sure it's KILLER. I love that reduced to a rock quartet idea. the setlists are GREAT too. WOW!

Agreed... we really should limit that to 7...

Yeah. There is a HUGE difference between: "I don't like it" and "this IS bad."

I think all people can say the former, but I don't feel qualified to say the second so often (and I don't many people do) as I don't have the qualifications to say that music is really objectively good or bad. Because it's a matter of personal preference.

This, this I like.

She's Always In My Hair isn't exactly an uptempo number to begin with. he's got seduction ballads with a quicker beat.

Perhaps because this isn't a funk project? It has funk elements, but it's not purely funk. Hannah is schooled and seasoned enough methinks to be more than capable of performing to even the snobbiest of standards. But perhaps that's not what is called for in this project.

To me, it's about as absurd as criticizing Bobby Z's drumming during the Purple Rain era for not being funk enough: you're damn right it ain't. That's not what the music called for.

I didn't mean funk the style. I meant musical properties of funk ie excellent groove and articulation. You can put funk into a rock song or a ballad by playing with a very precise attention to timing, feel and the dynamic relationship between each note. 'Do Me Baby' isn't a funk song but it's got the essential precision of Prince funk in it because it's so precisely played. Same with "Sister" and "Private Joy". I don't hear any of that precision of groove in Hannah's playing.

I really want to lover her playing.

She is beautiful and it's just so cool to see this blond girl drumming.

And I think she is good.

But there is something..........

somehow missing an edge.

I don't care if she would not technically be great, but plays full out with her heart.

And that is the thing that I miss??

I can imagine it's not easy to be on stage with Prince and get reviewed on the org.

But, still....

I'd rather hear her make mistakes, but absolutely losing herself in the music.

Than being careful and focus on her technical skills.

I would love to see her let go of her fears and restrictions, and just giving it all.

Straight from her heart.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
