Keep in mind that singles are not necessarily the same as hits.

I'll never forget that magical summer when NPG's "Peace" was a worldwide smash. Seems you couldn't go to a Walgreens, shopping mall, or barbecue without someone jamming it - Then to see it pick up 8 Grammy's AND an American Choice Award... lordy, how I miss those days.

dang, that's a lot of single releases, seeing them all compiled in a list like that
including deep album cuts that fans go crazy about, he's got enough material to fill endlessly fascinating setlists.
i can understand him being crazy about a song or two, so playing 2 covers on a tour. but the constantly performed cover versions of the same songs, and also the number of times he performs them makes no sense.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

True, but neither are fan favorites. My favorite Prince song, DMSR, is not a hit. Still worthy of the "too many hits" declaration. "New Power slide...."

Songs like DMSR and Adore fall in the "hit" category....but they were never singles. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Every old school r&b station still spins "Adore" on a regular basis. Therefore, it's a "hit." **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

DMSR was a promo single in the UK but I wouldn't call it a hit. I do understand what the OP was saying though, Prince certainly had many singles to choose from. Just realised that it's a little 'l' in the Time's Girl, and the OP didn't list a song called 'Gin'

He does seem to mention it a lot now, at my concert "Go and ask your friends, how many hits Prince got, I got so many hits" he said as he sat atop that hideous light up piano thing.
Being more accurate, we need to define what a "hit" is, because a lot of those songs charted poorly or missed the chart altogether.
He has had 5 solo number ones and 1 other number1 song recorded by another artist (Sinead O Connor) in the US. I think Manic Monday satlled at 2 and I feel 4 u at #3 by Chaka Khan.
If we include Top 10 hits, we have a few more, about 30 or so if you include the ones by other artists (The glamorous life got to #8 etc).
It climbs to 40 or so at Top 20 (He's had a lot of songs stiff at 11 or 12 like Lover and Love Bizarre)
And maybe about 60 in the Top 40
So that leaves 190 songs that were flops, as to me anything that fails top 40 is a pop flop, no matter how well it does on the Black or dance charts. Even a song that spends like 2 weeks at number 37 is not really a "hit" in my book. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Amen! And while I like "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," which was a "hit," there are so many other songs that weren't "hits" that are more worthy of the "too many hits" declaration than "TMBGITW." And regardless of whether he plays them or not, the declaration is still true. He's got more hits/jams than time will allow for one concert.

That's a very weak paradigm. Imagine a small tour where he palys all 250-300 hits spread over 10-20 shows. He plays all songs fully, no medleys, but can alter the arrangements slightly. He picks the order. No duplicates allowed. Such a tour I would do.
Same thing as playing more `recent` songs (less than 10 years old) each show. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

The gist of it, yes. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

It is never a weak paradigm to explain to someone like you who is obviously splitting hairs that a term, such as "hits," as most terms, has a denotative and connotative meaning. In this case, some of us are merely making it plain that when Prince is saying "hits" it seems that he is using it in a connotative sense, meaning well-crafted and popular songs either with the masses or with the Prince faithful even if they never charted in the top whatever. So, when Prince is saying "hits," he is clearly meaning or referring to--as any fool would recognize--a wider array of songs than just "chart topers." * Now, with all that said, the covers don't bother me nearly as much as they bother others, but I would much rather hear post-2000 songs in their place. Yet, while I would much rather hear new songs because I'm one of those in the minority of this site that love much of the post-2000 production, I've also said many times that it's hypocritical for the majority of members of this site to spend the past thirteen years bitching about the post-2000 production and then bitch that he only plays "chart topers" and covers. I will add that for the past thirteen years Prince has played more of his post-2000 songs than many on this site will lead us to believe, and if the Dakota shows are any signal then the upcoming tour may feature post-2000 songs as about thirty percent of the set list.
