MPLSoUND (the music behind the vocals)

I know many people hate this album (don't know why, I mean sure it isn't 1999 or one of his best but it is good IMO) but I wanted to know if people liked the music behind the vocals. I do. I wish the music was louder than the vocals that way we could appreciate them a bit more. I'm not dissing P's voice (although certainly not his best efforts but again not too bad).

So waht do y'all think?

I like it.Ol' School compaby bores me to death.I love the music, the way it's arranged.i think some ppl hate it because it's electronic music ,which is weird because Prince is one of the first to embrace electro to his sound

I agree it's astounding but I'm glad we have mplsound too. I love most of the songs, dance 4 me, valentina, no more candy, old Skool company, better with time and here. The only one I'm not keen on is chocolate box but that probably is more due to the lyrics than the music.
RIP sad

I'm all for electronic, but as long as he doesn't know how to use it properly, it's completely useless.

I am a big fan of electronic music and I am not sure if Prince uses to his advantage sometimes.

I liked Old Skool Company and thought it was quite funky and I also liked some of the tracks on Emancipation / Crystal Ball that had a soul/rnb sound, but on times he didnt use the R'nB sound the way it should either.

Becasue he tries and experiments with those genres sometimes it sounds a little bit of a mess.

To be honest I didn't care for most of the music on MPLSound. The synths sounded cheap and hollow to me. The whole album sounded like it was played on a casio keyboard that was left on the "inspector gadget" setting.

'Here' is a perfect example of what could have been a nice Prince ballad (definitely not on par with something like 'When 2 R in Love" but at least up to snuff with "Call My Name"), but it gets bogged down with with that terribly cheesy ascending synth line. If that synth line had been played on an acoustic guitar (or horns, or even just better synths) the song would be the highlight of the album, but unfortunately, it's a bad song that i'd be embarrassed to play to anyone but another Prince head.

Still better then Lotus though.

I have faith that Prince has definite mastery over the electronic gear usage, so I chalk my uneasiness with the sound of MPLSound to a creative choice that I just haven't warmed to. Don't know if I ever will for that matter. But I'll keep trying smile As always some really solid songs in spite of the tinny sound.

I liked this album when it came out. Not listening much to it afterwards, though.

.

Dance 4 Me, Here and Old Skool Company, those are good = my fave tracks off the album,

.

I like most of the songs, but not: the 2 first tracks There'll Never B.. and Chocolate Box, these are really bad/ the worst,

.

MPLSound is a much better album than 3121, Planet Earth & 20Ten, imo.

.

Good album: 7 or even 8 out of 10, --> good, but not excellent.

.

I rate the Lotus album the same: about 8/10.

That "Casio keyboard" crap never seems to go away on this site.

Seriously, I wish it would. People are embarrassing themselves each time they use that expression.

Analog synths are not cheap by any stretch of imagination and even if Prince has used mainly digital emulations of those sounds since the 1990s the units he has used have been of the most expensive kind (Nord Lead, Access Virus). Casio keyboards use entirely different methods for sound generation.

It is meant to imply that the Synths sound cheap and amateurish, and like a crappy children's keyboard was used. When someone says that the vocals sounded 'tinny' they don't actually think tin was involved in the generation of the sound.

Thanks for dropping the knowledge though, I really learned a lot, and I feel that the Org has really grown because of this interaction. THANK YOU

I really dug MPLSound. Personally I thought it was a nice addition to LotusFlow3r. It added variety to the whole package. I'm always a sucker for most anything of his using the Linn. wink

I do echo some of the comments on the synth sounds though. They just don't have that same fullness or personality as his 80's work. I guess what I mean is that they sound more like a default preset vs a tailored and tweaked sound.

V10LETBLUES

I would rate this as the most atrocious Prince album by far. Nothing he has released comes close to it in terms of terribleness.

I like this album alot. The only songs that I do not like on this album are No More Candy For U & Ol Skool Company. My favorites are:Here, Valentina & Dance 4 Me-I could listen to these songs on repeat. Same goes for the Lotusflow3r CD. I played Lotusflow3r at a recent get together with friends who did not know this music but are music lovers and they loved it. Im not sure why people hate on these albums. Planet Earth is the only recent CD that I did not dig as much. 3121 was pretty good as well. Can't wait to see the show with 3rd Eye Girl in Denver May 12th. I will be at the 2nd show. Peace & Be Wild my friends.
