For those of you who have never heard 'Teen Town' here's a clip with the late, great bass player, Jaco Pastorius playing it live with 'Weather Report'. Talk about real music...dazaaam!
Nik played a 'teeny tease' of the bass line of that song, in the vid posted on this thread.
I've seen her with Beck. Prince ain't Beck. Versatile is not what's required -- funkiness, pocket is what's required. Larry Graham ftw, clearly.

I don't know what this means. Jeff Beck is one of the great electric guitarists, and probably the best of his generation of English blues guitarists. The point I was making is that what is required of a bassist to play his music isn't what is required of a bassist to play Prince's music.

No, not really. Truthfully, they're both just okay. But Ida isn't the bass player that Rhonda is, and Rhonda, in a funk context, isn't the bass player that Larry Graham is.

Not sure if she is a new girl in Prince camp, since there was no mention of that recently. But Holy Cow did she just play part of the bass line from Weather Report's 'Teen Town?' Now that's some badazz bass playing. She just won me over with that. I love that song. Just downloaded that track from Weather Report from Amazon 2 months ago. Love her stage presence. It's like she was channelling the late Jaco Pastorius. My ex introduced me to Weather Report and 'Return to Forever's music some years ago. She almost sounds just like Prince singing his song 'Let's Work'. If I only heard the audio, and not seen the visual, I would have thought that was Prince singing. [Edited 4/8/13 13:50pm]
She certainly TRIED to play Teen Town. Most of the notes were there, but none of the feel. Pretty standard. Maybe being a female with a look sets her apart? I don't know. I wouldn't kick her out of my band, but still she's fairly standard-level talent. I know a great number of fat, ugly white dudes who could out-do this display of hers. Whatever. Music isn't a competition so who cares? She's cool.

There are 2 basslines in Let's Work. Most bass players can play the 1st one. Very, very few can play the 2nd exactly right. Ida can. Watch the video with the 3rd Eye Girl interviews. Ida plays that bassline perfectly. Good pocket funk slap is all about articulation and the dynamic relationship between each note. Ida clearly understands this and has mastered it. Nik West doesn't have it.

Different strokes for different folks. By the way, Nik and Hannah have collaborated together as musicians in the past, so they're familiar with one another's skills as musicians. Furthermore, Nik West also jammed with Prince and the NPG not too long ago, as she posted about it on either twitter or FB. So apparently Prince was impressed enough by Nik's bass playing to call her to jam with him and the NPG. That is all. But hey, like I said, different strokes for different folks.
"I got to the rehearsal stage and started playing with some of the members of the band. I was facing the drummer and behind me was Prince who had snuck up on me as I was playing Larry Grahams song “It Ain’t No Fun To Me” … It was so funny because the band knew he was there and no one said anything.. it was hilarious! We stopped playing and he said “Hi Nik, Im Prince, give me a hug” I couldn’t stop smiling. He got on the keyboard and said “Now, let’s play it again”. He’s a beast on whatever instrument he touches. He took my bass and showed me things I didn’t even know about. He showed me Larry Grahams exact technique and approach for that song. WHAT A BASSLINE!!! After he slapped my bass crazy, he gave it back to me and said “now you do it” haha! I got nervous for a minute and messed up the first time. Then he said “Nik if you weren’t great and amazing at what you do, you would NOT be here” and THEN I played the bass line."

"Different folks, different strokes" and "each to their own" etc don't apply here. I'm not talking about personal taste or style. Her timing is very wobbly. Her articulation is poor. Teen Town had a lot of poor mistakes in it - she missed a lot of the notes. She actually sounded like a beginner when she played Teen Town. Let's Work was sloppy.

That's your opinion, I just don't agree with you. Nik did just fine with 'Let's Work' and apparently Prince made it clear that he wouldn't have called upon her to jam with his band, if he didn't feel she was worth inviting to do so, and that in and of itself puts the icing on the cake. At the end of the day, you and I just have 'different' views on her bass playing, and with that being said.... like I said before "Different Strokes for Different folksl". So be it. Peace.
