NOTE TO PER NILSEN: WE NEED U REALLY BAD

NOTE TO PER NILSEN: (if you are on the org and read stuff Please please please make a sequel to D.M.S.R. and please start reprinting The Vault! Please Please Please!!! What if I start a poll? I know someone said in a post long ago that you said you wouldn't, but with all of these new books coming out with false/INCORRECT info we need you! And to me, princevault just isn't enough.

Another thing, a lot of us cannot afford The Vault and all fans should be able to have a copy, it is like a Prince bible as many say. No fan should be without it as I've heard.

Please sad I'm sure a lot of people would want you to as well. You're the best when it comes to Prince and his music.

Thank you So so so so so much! Per Nilsen, if you read this post. Ultra thanks to you if you consider doing this (if you have time).

We will never have another Prince documentor like you.

He's not gonna write a sequel; he's moved on... That's why he sold his remaining copies of The Vault.

The Table of Contents is set up like this:

Days Of Wild: The Chronology

This Is Now: The 2004 Interim Report

Joints 4 Days: The Recordings

A Beautiful Night: The Appearances

Picture This: The Films And Videos

In A Word Or 2: The Interviews

Open Book: The Publications

Purple Music: The Circulating Recordings

In the chapter on Circulating Recordings, Nilsen has sections on Unreleased Songs, Unaired TV Footage, Unaired Video Clips, and Unreleased Footage From Video/Film Projects.

I haven't had time to read this book in depth; it has tiny print crammed into 717 pages.

I'm sure that orgers who have perused this for years can give you more in-depth information than I can at this point, having just purchased it not long ago.

Hope this helps a little. smile

Darned spacing between paragraphs isn't working! mad

http://www.princevault.com/ is a more up to date version of the Vault book. Enjoy it, it's a fantastic resource.

If I understood it correc tly neither Per Nilsen made any profit from DMSR nor did the Uptown gang make any profit from The Vault: the research involved was simply too high. Now I'll give you that the market is probably better for a Prince book now than it was in 99 when DMSR was published but nonetheless who would work at a loss forever. You want Mr. Nilsen to write a follow-up to DMSR: you find sufficient funds to make for a decent rights advance and who knows...

Now what I've read is that DMSR had been edited down to more than a half for publication needs. What Mr. Nilsen could maybe do is republish the entire body of work as an ebook and sell it online, now THAT would profitable.

Anyway, let's face the facts: these people gave 15 years of their lives to the fandom and then moved on (who can blame them, what they accomplished is so massive that we should all be grateful forever!). What we'd need would be people who'd be ready to take things where they left them with the same level of professionalism.

Princevault is indeed an unvaluable ressource, so I'll also take this opportunity to thank these people as well.

Where can I sign up for that €99 copy of Per's book that connects his older books to the now?

More indepth reprints of existing works are fine too.

Yes, that is the modern way!

But we need a willing author or at least a team of them to complete the book(s).

We could do an extended version of one of the older books, depending on teh availability of the older information.

Or we could simply do a book that continues where the old one stopped.

What do you think?

MrNorway

I know there was a thread on the question I´m about to ask a long time ago, but there was no good answer to it, I think. Therefore... who is this Per Nilsen really? What is his profession and is there a picture of him somewhere? Just because I´m curious about who this highly talked about Prince expert really is. Is he a music journalist??

Per was the man behind UPTOWN magazine which was considered by many to be the best Prince-centric magazine. During it's 54 (?) issue run, it interviewed many of the Prince insiders and wrote some of the best reviews and tour retrospecitves you can find. They were also able to publish several books based on their research including Days of Wild and The Vault, which is considered the bible for Prince information. It is so detailed, that practically every book that has come after it credits it as a source. Even Touré's new book credits Per Nilsen (although he lists him as "Pers" for some reason).

Per wrote the book DMSR, which is considered to be the most accurate book about Prince's career. It covers Prince's childhood through 1987. Unfortunately, there will not be a 2nd book as Per has gone on record saying that he has no interest in a follow up book.

Regarding the rumour that there was more to the book, I don't remember too much more that didn't make it into the book, but many of us would love to see it released as an e-book for download. That might help recoup some of the cost of the research, etc.

If you haven't gotten DMSR or The Vault, seek them out. Per has a hard won reputation as a stickler for detail in his books. Well worth your time.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

The Vault was/is a truly stupendous piece of work and I often refer to it (though as said above the princevault is the go to place now for post 2004).

However, I suspect the days of people being prepared to spend 1000s of hours dedicated to Prince for little or no return are over. Per Nilsen was the most famous but there were others, Chris Dawson, Eileen Murton to name two from the UK.

Prince has acted like a dick towards people who have literally dedicated their lives to celebrating him as an artist (and producing some amazing magazines and other publications, almost always at great personal expense). While clearly Prince never asked them to, you'd have thought he would appreciate their efforts a bit more! Same goes for countless websites, Housequake springs to mind.

We all love Prince or else we wouldn't bother coming to places like the ORG and there is no doubting his musical skills etc. But as a person, it has been widely reported that he is quite simply a dick!

I hope Per Nilsen has decided to dedicate his time to more important things such as friends and family!!!!!

However, as a Prince fan I do thank him for the years of excellent books and the Uptown magazine.

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.
