One can rearrange a song. But if a song is a cover, which ICB by Nona is, its not written or .composed by the person/team doing the cover. No matter how many times "YESTERDAY" is covered, the composer is still Paul McCartney. If bob barley had done a reggae version of thaT song....McCartney is STILL the writer. Bob would be considered to have rearranged it....but by no means did he write it. Ditto for Ringo, Cocker, and Help from my Friends. Under no circumstance can u say Joe Cocker wrote that Song. He may have "owned" it with hisobscenely awesome arrangement..but he doesn't actually own it, nor does he get writing.credit. McCartney probably gets the lionshare of the covers royalties |

To think we know for sure that he didn't have something to do with the track is absurd.
I knew since I first heard it that Prince was on George Clinton's "Get Satisfied", because I can hear him. But, until Chronic Freeze posted on here a couple years ago, anytime I said that people said I was wrong. Chronic confirmed that he was on the track as well as being all over much of Clinton's Paisley Park material.... without being credited.
So.... we don't know.
EDIT: I am speaking about possible performance or production, of course... I know Marvin wrote the track.
I think it's safe to admit that Prince didn't play on more than we know on stuff like Louie Louie or Martika: people speak, these things get known, + Prince's sound is very recognizable and despite many songs trying to sound like Prince (and many fanboys wanting to believe that Prince recorded every song in the whole world), it's usually obvious when he's actually behind a track (save, I'll give u that, a single instrument's contribution such as Keep It Together).
I don't understand well what the deal is with Inner City Blues, though: I always assumed that P had produced the song that was aired on the L4OA TV show, but this thread doesn't make it clear wheither this is the same recording that was released (the one with W&L, which I didn't know of) or if 2 different versions exist. Can someone please clear this?
As for Get Satisfied I don't remember CF saying that P was on it but I may have missed it. Does anyone have a quote of this? (I know CF asked not to be quoted but I'm only asking for a sentence so that should be fair enough )
Thanks
the version of ICB on l4oa is just the version from the cd lipsynched to. i have the cd which is a marvin gaye tribute album by various artists, i think stevie and chaka have seperate tracks on it too |

What did Nona do wrong that she didn't blow up? She had pedigree and was hanging with Me'Shell and Wendy and then she did a song with P...... oh yeah.
Nawww...Nona struggles with addictions and right after she did that album was when he addicitons reached it's pinnacle and she needed rehab to save her life. That was why her carrer slowed down at the time but I'm not sure why it never restarted unless her addictions still grabbed her life away from her. |

by Nona Gaye....or did he? I love her remake on the Marvin Gaye Tribute album and I saw a video of her singing the song at Paisley Park....can anyone shed light? Also, I htink it was released when 'Love Sign' was released (or roughly).
That song, as well as Madonna's cover of Marvin's "I Want You" were both on the "Video Break" special that was aired before the "L4OA" special on VH1. The 2 songs were also BOTH on the compilation "Inner City Blues", which was a tribute album that came out at the time. Being that Madonna and Prince were still tied to WB, it was cross-promotion (which may be why Prince rolled his eyes every time it came on). Also, the NPG stuff was on its way out to the US when the "Gold" deal happened, but from what I remember his interview with Esquire may have put a stop to it when he kept mentioning them in a less-than favorable light.
That whole special was interesting.

Actually, technically it's a Lennon/McCartney song, but I get your point. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach. |

Was that tribute album released by Maverick? That would xplain the eyes rolling
L4OA is from early 1996, by this time negociations netween P and WB over a US release of Exodus had already failed for quite a while, just as much as any other: Prince was on his way to delivering C&D and TVOF4S as well as a coupla songs for Girl 6 and both parties knew that their collaboration would stop right after that. At this point Prince actually had already annonced the future release of Emancipation by releasing limited edition single in december 1995. |

actually, technically paul mccartney is the solo composer. it's only credited to lennon-mccartney as john and paul agreed in the late 50s that any songs written either together or solely would be credited to both. paul had a dispute with yoko over the order of the names as he used mccartney-lennon as credits on the live wings album for the songs that he wrote, so it's not always lennon-mccartney. but paul technically is the solo composer |

yes, but whoever said paul composed it was right, as he did. it's only lennon-mccartney, or mccartney-lennon, on paper. how does he sleep? |

McCartney got half-credit for plenty of Lennon compositions that he didn't deserve and vice versa. What irritated John more in his last interviews was that George didn't thank him in his autobiography, even though John contributed some lyrics to the song "Taxman" and generally served as a mentor for George, more so than Paul. no, it was released by Motown.
and this is the reason why the video for Madonna's version of "I Want You" is as far as the promotion of that intended single got. It was on both the tribute album and Madonna's "Something To Remember" collection of ballads and was intended to be the first single. However, WB and Motown couldn't agree to who was going to foot the bill for distributing/promoting the single, so WB quickly went with "You'll See" as the true lead single to promote the Madonna album.
