Remember buying bootlegs?

Just a quick question. Who remembers buying bootlegs

of Prince stuff from back in 1999 and earlier? I do. It was

specail. I bought tons of stuff back then and it cost me

hundreds of dollars. Now, people just torrent the stuff

and get it for free. But I have a lot of the original boots

and no torrents can match that. It's a small club that

has the original boots and I'm one of them!

I remember paying $50 or $60 for a 2 CD set back in mid 90's

When i got home and played them I was so disapointed, They sounded like shit confused

So i do not miss the days of buying bootleg cds

Though i did stumble on some soundboard cds in the early 90's

Man, my uncle and I bought so many bootlegs from 1993 till the time that they said that record shops were being raided for Prince bootlegs and when I got old enough, I even bought one called the palace of tears double cd and I bought that over going to see Roger with Zapp live back in 1998 and now, I think that was my biggest regret as far as musical experiences and I even sent the only two bootlegs that I had back to Prince when he demanded the fans to send their bootlegs back to him.

WHAT?!?! eek

You actually did that? OMG! I figured nobody was censored enough to do that.

So, why did you send them to him? What did you get out of it? Looking back, do you think you should have kept them?

Sorry. I've just never seen anyone admit to sending the boots back just because he asked them too...

I did it out of great respect for him and to help with his fight against warner bros. because it was said that warner bros. were the main ones behind releasing a lot of bootlegs that were on the market.

I understand that because I had the same experience, but many were great. For

instance I just grabbed one off my shelf and it's called "Dreams." It's a professional

looking package by Thunderball and it's a 3 disc set with a nice inserts 3 disc case

and it sounds great and it's labeled as "Demos $ Outtakes 1982-1997" Just saying

that I payed a lot of money for this set way back then and the excitement is gone

from buying this to downloading a torrent. I was just remembering and not really

getting into the legal aspect of it. I miss those days.

^^^ I ran across boot Cd's in 1992, but the store was busted and stopped selling P boots sad

In 1994 i came across more cds were $20 a pop! but they stopped carrying them too

I found some in mid 90's at a super high price! I stopped buying because i felt i was ripped off mad

2001 i got the 3cd set Disposition that was an eye opener biggrin

Sorry if I offended you. I just think it's funny, that's all. hug

BTW, the "bootlegs" Prince said WB were resposible for were the European CD single reissues of 80s 12'' singles, iirc, and not actual bootlegs.

Also, I love the early days of Ebay when they would sell

a common Prince CD and as a "bonus" would give the winner

of the auction a free disc. Well, the whole point of the auction

was to the "bonus" disc. People would pay $150 for a copy

of a Dirty Mind CD. Good times.

keeping in mind that im only 18. THere is no way i can just find Prince bootlegs in a store or in a physical form with ease. Wen i go to foreign countries its alot easier but i rarely do so. I have very few Prince bootlegs and most of the stuff that is bootleged isn't that rare at all. If there was a PRince bootleg store in chicago or a repubtable dealer i would gladly shell out money for boots as its cool to have a cd case or something. The only place i guess i would pay for a boot would b ebay. But being born in the 90s does have its cons and one is u don't get to partcipate in the rapid bootleg culture

BUt it does have its pros. WIth the internet its alot easier for u to manage ur bootleg and alot faster to get new show performances. But i don't like having to spend hours crafting a dvd and i don't like having to deal with computer viruses .

And on the same note, who remembers the first time they saw the '83 First Avenue show? With Computer Blue, Electric Intercourse, Case of U, Automatic and Purple Rain? My VHS copy of that show looks kinda professional and I love it to this day.

The internet has made it easier, but not more exciting. To get a package like Crystal Ball show up on your doorstep with songs like Do Yourself A Favor and Chocolate, etc wrapped up like candy you can share with your friends is never going to happen agian. Easy is not always better. I understand your predicament and the impetus of this thread.

I wasn't clear, I didn't mean Crystal Ball, I meant a package resembling Crystal Ball. A professional package with 3 discs of unreleased songs that Prince did not release. Sorry for the confussion.

I don't miss buying but I thought the whole trading aspect was pretty cool, sending and receiving packages from peeps all over. The boots kept me interested in the dark days of the late '90s and early 2000s.

Unique, that's the funniest shit I've heard all night!!! Is that true? No matter, I'm still

laughing. (You didn't even like The One? or did they keep that track and send back all

the rest and charge postage due? Prince....that butterscotch motherfucker!)

in the past, I have spend a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$ on boots,

I have kept all the vinyls and a few CDs,

most of them CDs I gave away for almost nothing.

Prince boots makes me bored, they don't turn me on like they used to. zzz

(I only like good soundboard recordings -- and when they are not like jazz.. - I hate Prince doing jazzy music).

Yep! That was fun and one of the things that kept me a fan in the 90s. (it wasn't the albums!) These days, I don't listen to that stuff an awful lot any more. Every once in a while I buy one as a souvenir of a good concert. The one on Eye Records of Arnhem 2010 has a booklet with photos taken at the actual concert which really take you back there.
