Happy 35th Anniversary to For You!! For You was released 35 years ago today, & on a side note per the 1976 Copyright Act may Prince finally claim ownership of this recording now that the 35 year period has passed.

My fav tracks on this album would have to be Soft & Wet of course, In Love, My Love Is Forever, & here's hoping he does I'm Yours on this upcoming tour like in did at the Conga Room in '09 [Edited 4/7/13 4:05am]

This album deserves so much more praise than it gets usually, mostly as it was the first and his first attempt at recording a big budget commercial production. Sure he recorded prior to For You, but not for the target audience that For You was expected to reach.
Many people always say this album was very average or underwhelming, but given the ambition, his musical proficiency and high level of originality its pretty remarkable.
Sure it pales next to his 80s classics and maybe even "Prince" but this is an incredible first album from an unknown 19 year old kid from the Midwest. The fact he got to make it is a coup in itself. He basically convinced a major record company to let him, a 19 year old black kid from Minneapolis with no real track record in making major label music, to do the whole shebang himself (Even if Tommy Vicari was a minor distraction for him).
I really like the sound and the feel of it, his vocals work well and his ability at tuning multiple instruments and making it all sound cohesive. The songs lack hooks and have simplistic melodies, but the album has spark and passion. Prince sounds like he wants to be there and is enjoying the music and making it. He really puts his heart into it.
Soft and Wet, Baby and I'm Yours are the stand outs, although I love the cute pop strut of In Love and already the sexy falsetto is cranking out naughty lyrics (Rivers of what must be sexual fluids, heaving panting and suspurations on Soft and Wet).
The ballads are a bit dry, but at least he planned them well, with the old story he waited until he had a cold to do the vocals on So Blue. And I think the ballads on For You are better than the ones on Prince.
Overall, a decent start, the Peach and Black guys marked it way too low, its at least a 7 in my book, and surprisingly the only album I own on 4 formats - Record, Tape, Disc and Digital. [Edited 4/7/13 5:47am] Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

So has there been any reports of acts getting their copyrights back to the masters based on the 35 year law? "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I actually prefer this to the second album. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

not specifically a report, although it doesn mention artists who already went to court.
i also found this to be a short, insightfull article on the whole remaster/referral case. it will be interesting to see how prince approaches this.

Wow - this is making me feel OLD My fave track on this promising debut is the often overlooked, "Just As Long As We're Together". Nice little disco workout with a nod to Earth Wind & Fire. Little? Yeah, right. It might be little but it's loud

for a 19 y/o kid who made the whole thing himself: awesome album! For You In Love Soft & Wet Crazy You Just As Long As We're Together I'm Yours
are my favs. From his first album he showed his versatility: solo multi-tracked vocals, dance songs, ballads, accoustic, a rocker with blazing guitar & bass. I was just a kid in '78 & still years away from finding out who Prince was, but I think it must have been cool for those who picked up on him from the first album and got to see his early development. (expanding craziness) Great first album Prince!

*clapping* A gem.
Soft & Wet, the lure that got me hooked. The beginning.
For You, a thing of beauty. The vocal blend is incredible. I love that sound to this day.
Thank you. | |
