Is Prince popular in latin america?

Hey guys i was just curious if u guys knew anything about Prince doing tours of South america or latin america. I'm half mexican and have meet a few other Mexicans who have no idea who Prince is. Yet when i was in Mexico i did stumble across a Prince bootleg Of Sign O' The Times the Dvd at a market.

Did any of Prince's albums do anything in latin america? how come we don't hear about him touring there ever? From your expirience in those countries is he popular there or do people know who he is? And has Prince ever played mexico? and ps i know he played rock in rio

This is a great place to search about Prince's tours etc

www.princevault.com

For my own info, as far as I know Prince only ever played the Rock in Rio festival in 91 like you said and that had a bit of an issue where Prince made the audience wait a number of hours before appearing on schedule, which led to them chanting "Gay boy!" or something of that nature, whilst he was playing.

There was talk of him playing a festival in South America about 2 years ago, but either it never materialised or he cancelled it pretty close to the date.

I always think it's a shame he's never done more there as I've only seen a snippet, but Madonna's Sticky & Sweet(?) tour has a DVD there and the audience are wild! Same for the early 80's Queen performances and Rush. I certainly think that Rock in Rio didn't help matters for this relationship, but I would love the idea of going to see him play down there to a giant stadium...

There's still time! cool

Given the fact that he's done only 3 concerts on the entire continent (2 nights Rock in Rio plus 1 in Buenos Aires in 1991) my guess would be no. I didn't notice much love for him when I was in Mexico. That was 12 years ago, but I can't imagine things having changed very much. mexican

If you count Trinidad/Tobago as Latin America: no he's not very popular there. I spent a good while there and the only time I heard a Prince song was "I Wanna Be Your Lover" in a Chinese foodplace in Port Of Spain.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I have no info about it. There's a website in Spanish called El poblado de Prince, but I don't know how many Latin Americans are there.

A curious detail is that the Love Symbol album was published as a single record, with only 9 or 10 songs, and I think this edition is a Mexican one.

I wouldn't want to hurt anybody, but I think that in many Latin American countries there's a strong macho culture, and that certainly wouldn't help someone who has showed so much sexual ambiguity as Prince.

This happens, though to a much lesser extent, even in Spain, where someone like Bruce Springsteen, the macho prototype, has a very strong following, while Prince hasn't played here since 1999.

I lived in Rio for a bit back in the 90s and I remember him getting a bit of airplay on the radio there and MTV used to play stuff off Chaos & Disorder when it came out. There was one radio station that played Space quite a bit, which I doubt got much airplay anywhere else in the world. I think it was one of the mixes from the maxi single.

The 90s was definitely Prince's decade in Spain, he was quite successful, even playing in Madrid four times. It may also be the case in Latin America, though I suspect that he didn't get anywhere near his Spanish success in any Latin American country.

It could be interesting to study if Latin American's political instability could have influenced somehow Prince's airplay during the 80s. I'm talking without knowing, I don't know how the media were affected by authoritarian regimes there, I've just had this idea.

Of course Prince is popular in Latin America. He's known as Principe Rodriguez Negrin.

His most popular hits include :

Beso

Crema

La chica mas bella del mundo

Diamantes y perlas

Siete

Calle del abecedario

Quiero ser tu amante

Montañas

Llevame contigo

Hermana

Los brazos de Orion

My nombre es Principe

Porque me quieres tratar tan mal?

Cuando fuiste mia

Cabeza

Si yo fuera tu novia

Mexico doesn't represent latin america and for those people mentioning political instablities in latin america, don't know much about the region because MJ and Madonna is/are huge in latin america. Also for the comment about latin american being a "macho"culture , there's as much "machismo" in the US as there is in latin america, a very nasty stereotype btw to make about over 500 million people. It doesn't make sense all the way either, because Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and spanish singer Miguel Bosé are HUGE and LOVED in various latin american countries and two are them were/are gay and Bowie was very androgynous. His new wave/synth music in the early 80s didn't cross over with afro-latinos, mestizos and native american that were more into disco/r&b type of music such as Earth Wind & fire to mention some. Latin Americans have a fond love of rock music and folk music, but also pop and since Prince doesn't belong in any of those groups. He is known more among the higher middle classes (mostly white) and those who like 80s culture, and more so in south american than central america & the carribean. My ex bf who was argentinean dedicated me a prince song and occasionaly I would hear his hits on rock bars while in south america, but again that's when they would have these 80s nostalgia nights lol. He had also had some hits in the 90s. Spain and latin america are also different cultures and I would think he is actually more known in Spain than he is Latin America.

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate what you say about Prince's fans in Latin America.

Saying Latin American culture is a "macho" culture is certainly a generalization, but it's true that the "macho" ingredient is stronger in Latin cultures than in European/Anglo-Saxon, and this includes Spain and Italy too. As for your mention of other artists, Freddie Mercury had a very "macho" image and his music was guitar rock (the masculine music par excellence), Bosé has the great advantage of the language and is to a great extent outside the pop/rock world and Bowie's success in Latin America may be bigger than Prince's, but I don't think it's that big.

My comment about political instability was just something that came to my mind, and you should know it just after a quick read of my post. I know something about it, but I have no idea whether it had an influence on what we're talking about here. It may have something to do with Prince's lack of success in Latin America, and to prove this point one would have to carry a thorough research, which is something that, I'm afraid, neither you nor I are going to do.

It wasn't my intention to hurt anybody, as I already said. Saying that the "macho" ingredient is strong in Latin America is just a comment with which several Latin Americans I know agree. You know, it isn't such a bad thing to be critical of one's own culture. I myself am Spanish and find it a good thing to be critical with my country when I feel I must. wink

I don't think popularity has anything to do with him not touring down south.

Hec, he's only ever visited Australia twice and we ove him down here.

He would get 100,000 if he did Rio today IMO.

But for some reason bands just don't tour Latin America as often as other continents. Foo Fighters only just toured there for the first time last year!

I saw him in Buenos Aires in 91 and the stadium was pretty full, even though there was very little time in organising it.
Mind you, he didn't play an encore that night and the stage was ripped into pieces, so maybe that might have something to do with it.

Ripped into pieces? What exactly do you mean? These are some of the most mysterious concerts Prince ever did because few if any of the Prince "connaisseurs" were there. I have a CD called "Don't Cry 4 Me Argentina" so I know the set was basically the Nude tour with a few tracks of the upcoming Diamonds & Pearls album thrown in. Hell, he even played a track that wasn't even on the album called "Something Funky This House Comes". So if you were there...do tell!!!

Australia is different from Latin America tho, in many regards australia has always been a nation that seems to follow whatever the states or England is doing. So it's not a surprise that he is known down there. I doubt 100.000 people would show up for prince in rio, if it was Lenny Kravitz I have no doubt about it but prince? In 91 he was still pretty popular as well.

Also many bands/artists do play in south America and Mexico quite often. Ac/dc are often in Argentina and brazil. Also many south Americans listen to their own music, sadly these amazing bands aren't known around the world cuz they sing in Spanish but there are plenty of multi instrumentalists/ songwriters that have amazing work.

Well it was my first ever P show after following him since 83, so anything was going to be fantastic.

But this really was an entertaining set list.
A combo between hits, Graffiti Bridge and the up and coming D&P.
So a much better set list than the Nude Tour IMO.

It was at the River Plate stadium which was pretty full and very enthusiastic.
But when P and band didn't come back for an encore, the hot blooded Latino blood kicked in, and abusive taunts and havoc begun.

Chants of "Hijo de puta" we're chanted and bottles etc thrown at the poor crew who were trying to pack up the stage.
Where the sound mix board was situated, there was a HUGE 10 meter black and gold symbol sheet that got ripped apart for souvernirs.

Personally I loved the show and was happy just to see the main set. But I was a fan so.....
