Rock & Roll Is Alive

... And it lives in Minneapolis!
Does anyone remember this little ditty from back-n-da-day? It was written as a quick response to Lenny Kravitz' Rock & Roll Is Dead, a hit in 1995 (I take my username from a Lenny Kravitz song but really, Prince beats him in every respect) and I always thought it was a funny bit of healthy competition. The Prince song features the NPG band in full shape rockin' all over the place.
What do ya'll think?

Love it. It's a shame it was hidden away as a B-side. Would have been great on The Gold Experience or NPG Exodus, deserves to be on an album!!!

I guess that was the whole point. Just a quick throwaway jam that was never supposed to be on any album. It just goes to show that the stuff Prince regards as unimportant can be so much fun just because of the lack of ambitions.

It was a jam off "Get Wild".

A lot of great stuff came out of the mid-90's!

Classic B-side!

Prost!

Not always, usually he does well on songs where he is trying to compete with someone or 'prove a point' to them, which is quite ambitious in itself.

Think PFunk. But if you mean making it without a clear end in mind ie. an album then yes.

I see your point. The Black Album was a bit like this. Show the rappers how it's done! In that respect, yes, you're right.

What makes you say that? I don't recall any similarities (but it's been a while since I've listened to either).

U mean "Dead on it", right? Well, I guess the whole album was a bit like that. And in the mid 90s, P/prince must have had that same feeling. Funk/rap/rock? I can do that! Silly name-change or not, he still made some kick-ass tracks in those 90s. Days of Wild, anyone?

Oh yeah, it started out as Get Wild and then he just threw out all he had. Give it another listen, it's fun!

Dull and lazy, I actually think the Kravitz song it's 'responding' to is much, much better.

There was a story posted at the time that some Prince fans were at a Lenny Kravitz concert and they had a banner that read "Rock & Roll's Alive." The story goes that they were approached by Lenny's security as asked about the banner. They said something like "It was a song that Prince did as a take on "Rock & Roll is Dead" and that Prince was a friend of Lenny's"

the security guard leaves and then comes back and says something like "Lenny and Prince are not friends."

*i am sure it must have been posted here... or could have been AMP?

Should have saved it for Chaos & Disorder.

Not a huge fan of the song, but it's fine I suppose.

No it didn't. But it was recorded around the same time as the released live version of DOW. the videos too. Those late '95 Paisley Park concerts/video shoots.

Circus Tour, October 7th in cologne, germany at the "E-Werk". The concert was broadcast a few hours later on german television and is circulating as a bootleg.

I was there. I saw these people with the banners and yes, they couldn't bring them into the venue. I heard that they said it had something to do with the broadcast and the fact that Lenny was under contract with Sony and Prince with Warner Bros. They (Sony) didn't want to give an artist from another label (Prince) free promotion via the television broadcast.

In my mind it was always a natural follow on groove from the Peach outro, Get Wild extended live groove (doesn't it use the same "Impressive" Darth vader sample as on the Channel 4 UK White Room performance of Get Wild), and then the intro to Chaos and Disorder.

Nice bit of faux-live rock fun. cool

Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.
