1-800-New Funk album. Favorite songs, do you like it? Do you wish there was an MPLS album?

I really like this album. It was good to hear all those different Paisley artists and the Prince stuff, obviously. Was worth it just for Color, 2Gether, Lovesign, MPLS. A really tight album.

Glad the Nona Gaye song was on there.

Too bad the Crayons or MPLS never had a full album.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

I haven't heard this album in years, but I'll never forget how excited I was to find this album one day (I didn't know it existed) and how deflated I was when I got home and put it on. With a few exceptions, it all sounded so average and bland to me, I found myself worried about his direction. The release of Come a month later helped a bit, but I've never warmed to this collection

"Standing At The Altar" by Margie Cox is the highlight of this compilation music

Aside from a few songs, I really liked this record.

  1. MPLS - I think this song is just DOPE. And not just cuz I'm from MPLS. I remember hearing it either on KMOJ or at Glam Slam and just thinking, "DAMN!" Funky as hell. I would be all for an MPLS album if it's as funky as this.
  2. Hollywood - I liked it but already had it on George's album. No Prince involvement IIRC.
  3. Love Sign - One of my faves from the 90s. Prince doing his 90s R&B thing, which some don't care for, but I thought this one was done extremely well. I love how the funk on it sounds wet.
  4. I Eye Love U 2Night - I think its a well written song but Mayte's vocal is a tad thin. Mica's version was better. The fact that Ms. Labelle and Rosie Gaines (and Margie?) are singing backup to Mayte is pretty laughable. The power of Prince, I guess.
  5. Color - I'm a big Steele's fan and loved their record with "Well Done" on it. This is a great track with great vocals and a stirring breakdown. I think that's Jearlyn who's killing it on that part. Fire.
  6. 2Gether - Tony actually is tolerable on this one. Maybe because he's not trying to spit his rhymes so fast and isn't trying so hard. I love the laid back groove on this. This one and Johnny...and maybe Deuce & A Quarter...and I guess "Oilcan" are the only things on Goldnigga that I go back to.
  7. Standing At The Altar - Probably the best song on the album. Shoulda been a hit, imo, or at least known by more than the diehards. I think it's a classic. Margie is a beast on this.
  8. You Will Be Moved - Good tune but already had it on Mavis' album.
  9. 17 - sounds like elevator music to me. Sorry.
  10. A Woman's Gotta Have It - Another low point for me. Nona just doesn't have it vocally to me.
  11. MPLS Reprise - Unnecessary.

Most songs aren't that strong but still it sounded fresh at the time, with that whole new-jack swing thing being around. It could have been a fresh start for a new label if P hadn't decided to drop every project but his own for NPG Records. I was particularly excited with the new Madhouse album and though it's been bootlegged I regret to this day that it hasn't ever been officially released, it wulda been a nice addition to P's official discography. I always felt that Love Sign shoulda been on The Gold Experience, too, maybe replacing We March, it was a strong single and the video had a lot of airplay in France, it could easily have been a summer hit if WB hadn't prevented the single's release, all my friends liked the song! As for MPLS I know that Color was also part of it but I don't think we know what it would have been like save Minneapolis, The Ryde Dyvine and Color. Eventually that particular project morphed into Exodus so in a way there WAS a MPLS album.

I sometimes catch myself singing standing at the altar at random times even though I rarely listen to it so that really shows how catchy that song is

It's an ok compilation to me, but my favorite track is "Standing At the Altar." That song is my favorite song that he has written for someone else to sing.

This echoes my experience exactly. Boring album, IMO.

I think the plan was to release full albums from most of those artists, but Prince soon found out that being "independent" is not as easy as it sounds lol When he had Paisley Park Records,Warners were paying for alot of the expenses. When that stopped,he didn't have the means (or money) to launch a successful indpendent label.

Not sure if it was a question of money, I think P was LOADED back then and execs at edel said they were ready to release at least half a dozen albums, with catalogue numbers and all, when P dropped the whole thing save Child Of The Sun and Exodus.

I think it has more to do with P losing interest in having a vanity label, wanting to focus on his own music, maybe because he realized that being able to release as much "Prince" albums as he wished, he didn't have to "hide" behind other artists or monikers anymore, and waste time and money producing artists no one cared about.

I agree w most - standing at the altar is definitely stand-out and some of the rest is cool but others are weak and evn cringe-worthy.

Although i almost nevr played it on my own, One thing I must say is that back in the nineties when I used to have roof parties every now and then at my appt., this disk was sure to get things shaking. Ppl would always come up asking for details etc.

Had never heard Hollywood until I heard it on this album and absolutely loved it. Belita Woods' voice is fantastic. One of my all time favourites.
