Lyrics FixUrLifeUp A lot of comments say that the lyrics are out of a self help book.
First of all, what's wrong with a self help book? You might want to pick one up yourself.
Soulsearching and do some personal growth might be very helpful for the people who have to deal with you daily.
I really like the simplicity but vast implications of the lyrics of FixUrLifeUp.
What do you guys think?
"Tell me how some people walk in the sun while others just walk in the dark" "Looking through the barrel of a gun, hands behind their back in a parked car"
The picture he paints of someone with tunnelvision, feeling incapacitated and locked up in his/her life is spot on. Somebody who is miserable, but can't see that if he/she steps out of the car, get 20/20 vision, that person doesn't need to feel so dark. And walk towards a lighter life.
This is something a lot of people struggle with.
"When will the leaders become followers"
I feel strongly about this sentence. Because I'm convinced that leaders who are solely motivated to serve the people, can lead. If they aim to ease the suffering of all, they lead. However, most leaders are just prone to lead their own bankaccount and the people who serve the leader his wealth. *cough*Putin*cough*cough*
"In America you might fare (?) better, I London you'r sure to be toast"
Well, I was toasted last weekend in London
Wondering about America now.
"You always get the dream that you deserve from what you value the most"
Spot on. I try to stay away from the dreams that advertisement and tv will SELL me. Because it's tempting to value beatiful clothes, cares, holidays, hired models around you and other people who treat you nice because you'r rich. So, if you value that life style, you pursue that kind of dream. And will have to deal with the issues that come with a dream like that.
I try to dream about a loving family, friends and share laughter & love. With clothes and a house that keeps me warm and food that is nutritioneous. And I deal with the things that I need to do to eventually lif (?) that life.
"In stead of people getting all they want, they can get what they need"
This is the best one of the song. It covers the solution about most global suffering. Because if people would just get what they need; a warm and sheltered house and nutriceous food to keep their body healthy. Warm or cooling clothes to protect them from weather conditions. And walking or biking in stead of using the car for every little inch.
I mean, we would not have war, poverty, starvation, pollution, extinct species and rainforrests if human kind would just take what they need, not what they want.
Allthough it sounds like a simple line, the implication and execution is far from simple.
So, to the people who claim these lyrics to be childish; I dare you to just have what you need and not what you want for just a month. Than see how you think about this line.
The refrain":
"Don't worry about what the crowd does" "Be good at what you love"
Again sounds simple, but when you look around you, it's not that easy. People submit themselves to the expectations of society, friends or family. I really belief that if everybody would do what they love, no matter what everybody thinks, people would be more happy.
This is not a simple thing. We all, in some way or another, adjust. Which is a good thing, because you want to be considerate about your environment. But turns bad, when you forget to value who you are and be who you are.
If people would dress, eat, behave, move, work, talk and just life according their own values, life would be more colourfull and countries would be filled with people who have a fullfilling life.
Now, it's just a lot of people who are very frustrated about trying to fit in and very busy judging eachother for not fitting in.
Try, for one month, to not judge anybody and especially not judge yourself. Try for one month to be good at what you love and not worry about the crowd. See how simple that actually is.
"Don't make us put somebody else in for you"
Good one.
You are one of a kind and please value that. Because if you resist being that one of a kind, and try to fit it with the crowd, you are just playing a role in a bad movie.
And when you are nothing more but a character, you are replacable by somebody who learns you lines and acts your role.
I really like this onel
And I like it how he puts his money where his mouth is. The music is not following the current musical taste of the crowd. It's Prince's own. Just like he sings about.

you always get the dream that you deserve from what you value the most you need to fix your life up! fix your life up! fix it up! girl with the guitar is 12 times better than another crazy face trying to be a star when you're just another freakinal misogynistic for the noise when the leaders learn how to follow and then the people lead
"In stead of people getting all they want, they can get what they need"
you need to fix your life up! alright! fix your life up!
fix your life up!
Just worry about being good at what Don't make this complicated, you it's true
Ahm... This might be closer to the actual lyrics. Please improve!!1! Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

What you regard as the best line reminded me of:
You can't always get what you want But if you try some time...you might get what you need Sounds familiar? And then the one about not worrying about what the crowd does. As he said in Live Out Loud: Ain't gonna rock and roll with the crowd He's repeating himself badly. That's the problem with the lyrics of this Prince song. He's not saying anything that hasn't been said before. [Edited 4/13/13 7:25am]

I don't get the hate for these lyrics. Surely they're better than those godawful Temptation lyrics. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I love everything about the music and lyrics. its definitely more refined than grunge rock and with great message too. [Edited 4/13/13 7:55am]

Yes, and I really don't mind.
I agree with his lyrics. So, what's wrong with repeating the theme?
I mean, there have been millions songs that vary on the theme "I love you, please love me back"
I don't understand what the problem is when he's conveying a theme in more than 1 song.

well, ive never heard him say any of this in a song especially a rock song so I dont think he's repeating himself.

That's funny because I love the Temptation lyrics:
"Purple-electricity whenever our bodies touch Ooh, baby, I love it when your thighs twitch!"
Fun stuff, and very much centered in Prince's "purple" world.
The lyrics for fixurlifeup are not too bad, after seeing them on here. Eons better than that "LOL" drivel, anyway. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Superficial comparison.
Lyrics have very different intentions.
Not at all the same.

It's probably just a coincidence, but still... "Be yourself, don't care what others think" has been Prince's message since Dirty Mind. (Now where I come from...) If 30 years later, you're still saying the same, then yes, we're dealing with a writer who is repeating himself.

These lyrics are beyond laughable when you realize Prince is the one preaching them at you. :lol:What a hypocrite.

I like the lyrics. It's a universal message we all have to deal with, individuality and the need to fit in society. I don't mind if he or others have said this before, there's joy in repetition! He's not going too deep into this, as always he doesn't articulate his toughts too much, but that's ok... Leaves space for anyone to pick up what they want...
Of course you can like it or not, but this song is VERY Prince to me.

"Everybody on this earth has got a vice
IDK. It all just sounds very forced to me. But Prince fans not agreeing on what's good has become par for the course. He's just too diverse I think. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I don't really care if the lyrics are 'Self help-ish' or not, I just don't particularly care for them. The music is really cool, but the lyrics are just whatever.
I also had to do a big eye roll at the misogynistic lyric, if there's any industry that favors attractive hotties over the talented, it's the music industry. Then again that works for both women and men, so it sort of comes up scratch. But misogynistic seems to be the new buzz word lately. "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Misogynistic is a horrible word to sing along.
What was he thinking
I would be worried if everybody would agree on liking his lyrics or song. That would be very strange. And a sign that something is horribly wrong.

I don't think Prince wrote this (lyrics) maybe the music. Same goes for LOL ( written by Liv) Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Nice, grungy sounding tune. Not quite sure what he's getting at in the America/London comparison...different ways of looking at things perhaps?! Interesting lyrical nod to Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'. Quite like the kind of spiritual/self helpy/motivational message of his lyrics of late. On the whole pretty cool....needs to be put on the site as a download for sure or saved for the album.

I totally loooove the rock-pop-funk of "Temptation", never looked that much on the lyrics, as a non-english speaking citizen. . I do not like the new "Fix.." song, though. . The lyrics isn't the worst, the music is what worries me.. Prince 4Ever.

When I heard that Pink Floyd reference I nearly spit water out my mouth. Prince referencing PF is just too cool! I've always wanted to see Prince cover a song like Money, One of My Turns, Another Brick In The Wall Part III, or Goodbye Blue Sky/Mother...
Overall I really like this song. I didn't like how preachy it sounded at first but it's certainly grown on me. The way he says Fix Ur Life Up reminds me of when he'd call out "Get Your Groove On" from that song, I swear he says it the same way. The lyrics aren't bad, but it's weird to hear him preach to this kind of backing track. I mean, songs with instrumentation like Let's Go Crazy or Compassion suit the lyrics better since they have a more hopeful style to them if that makes sense. I still love the track though! Purple is the color of my heart,
Bruised from you leaving me.

Agreed - great about the PF reference. The Fix Your Life Up bit does sound a bit like the way he says Get Your Groove On / that bit also reminds me of a bit of the way he raspily sings 'Endorphinmachine' and the rest of it does remind me a bit of the Chaos and Disorder era.
I like it a lot, it's positive and has attitude and would sound great played loud from a high quality version!
