I find condition of the <3 breaks it aparet a bit. And the little bittty bits of the album make me feel very alone, much in the way that "There is Lonely" does. COurse that song accomplishes it in one track whereas ATWIAD takes a while to make you feel totally lonessome and...kind of...watched.

I don't find the album "creepy",I find it underwhelming boxed A few cool tracks, but this isn't one of Prince's strongest albums.

I had the cassette. I always find *something* that I like on each of his albums. With that said, this one is my least favorite from the eighties. Pop Life, Tambourine, and the B-sides. That's it. ATWIAD and Parade are tied for my least favorite from then. I was happy when he released SOTT!! razz

ATWIAD to me even though a very colorful album still has the dark brooding Prince touch

ATWIAD is a reaction to, and a kind of send up of Purple Rain, it tries in every way possible to be different to purple rain, and I think he may have overdone it in some parts. People old enough to remember that PR was MASSIVE, I mean it was an incredibly huge hit with so many people buying the record and watching the movie, there was Prince "fever" everywhere. This success meant 2 things - a follow up was needed, no it was expected and it gave him license to do whatever he wanted. This album is two fingers up to those who wanted PR part 2, it is political and has his first real serious social commentary (pop life, america, paisley park) and satirical (temptation, tambourine, raspberry b). This is about as far away as PR as he could get and allowed him to sort out the wheat from the chaff in terms of fan base. The execs at WB were probably shaking in their boots when they first heard this! and Prince probably loved this fact. The songs tambouring, temptation seem to upset people, but to me there are a lot of "in jokes" in these songs, and they seem to be a "fan" test, to see who would stick with him through his lurid ideas.

As far away from Purple Rain as this album sounds, it's still very much touched by Purple Rain in many ways

I agree with your take on this album/period

ATWIAD could have been much bigger than it was, it's an album that had to be promoted ie videos performances and more than 3 or 4 singles

Because it was so different from what we all expected, to do it justice it had to be promoted.

Purple Rain didn't need any video promotions, because it had the movie, and the only real video was When Doves Cry. But ATWIAD even the Bsides could have had videos. He presented another utopia 2 us apart from Uptown & Erotic City. the Paisley Park utopia had a lot of layers so to do it justice, paint some wonderful pictures to go with this wonderful album

Tamborine to me is just like his 1981 Tick Tick Bang wild frantic lust masturbation I love the song

Condition of the Heart in many ways reminds me of God(the Dance Electric)

Manic Monday should have been a part of this project too

I love that image

When he gets ready to do a full circle tour mixed band from 1978-2013 and grasps the extended hand of the TIme FDelux Sheila E the Revolution

He should get a stage set up similar to SOTT but with inside home feel with stuff like that wall, stuff that looks like we are in a back stage dressing room, or his home studio etc

That basement bedroom with all the side rooms and halls fascinates me

LUST FEAR INSECURITY HATE PAIN

(22) BASEMENT -- HALLWAYS AND BEDROOM -- NIGHT

A naked LIGHT BULB snaps ON. It dangles
like a pendulum, casting strange
shadows. The basement is partitioned
off into a series of rooms,
interconnected by a labyrinthine
coimbination of passages. An old washer
and dryer stand in the corner.

Prince descends the steps slowly. He
comes through a door, closes it behind
him. He moves down a narrow passageway,
enters a small cramped BEDROOM.

*****************************

(70) INT. PRINCE'S ANTECHAMBER AND BEDROOM -- NIGHT

He didn't like living alone
The house where he lived had many hallways
It was a long walk 2 his bedroom
Because 2 him each hallway represented an emotion
Every one vastly different from the next
One day while she was with him
He decided 2 name each one
She walked by his side, one hand on his thigh
No - she was sort of half a step behind him
Yeah, the grip on his thigh intensified
As they walked slowly through the corridor
He named the hallway "Lust"
And as they passed through the next one
He named it "Fear"
The grip she now loosened
So he walked faster
Her hands now trembling
She let dropped 2 her side as he wrote the word "Insecurity"
He looked into her eyes and smiled a demon smile
And quickly walked onto the next
Corridor after corridor
He named almost all when suddenly… he stopped
He picked up the word "Hate"
She was gone
So he picked up another – "Pain"

He turns on a LIGHT, disappears into an
ADJOINING ROOM. Vanity looks around
amazed. She stands in a small ANTE-
CHAMBER whose walls are covered with
thicks pads and foam.

Colorful MOBILES hang suspended from the
ceilings -- various INSTRUMENTS lie
about: a drumset, an electric guitar,
and a small upright piano. A stereo and
cassette player. are perched on a shelf,
and two speakers are recessed into the
walls. The entire room looks hand-
built, the wood carefully painted, or
stained.

She peers through the doorway into the
adjoining room. BLUE MOONLIGHT filters
in through the casement windows.
Various MURALS are painted on the walls,
MOBILES are suspended from the ceiling.
A bed sits in the middle of the floor, a
vanity table and mirror nearby.

She stands idly a mement, then moves
around the antechamber. Various
KNICKNACKS catch her attention. Small
wind-up TOYS lie about: a soldier, a
bear banging on a drum, a tractor and
car. A small MUSIC BOX sits on a shelf.
She turns the handle, a little TUNE
fills the room...

A cassette sits in the player. She
snaps it shut, hits the play button. A
DRUM BEAT fills the room, followed by a
WOMAN'S VOICE, seemingly speaking in a
foreign tongue. The combination is
hypnotic and sensual -- she finds
herself drawn in ...

Hell naw. Living day to day can be creepier than anything. geek Am listening to perhaps the weirdest song on the disc right this second, Temptation and it always makes me giggle. "You don't! Now die..." omfg nuts He lays his vocals on a little thick and it isn't as grandiose as it could'a been. The released take on the title track is trumped by the un-released version that keeps an actual drum beat. twocents

thumbs up! cool concept cool Yeah, years after the screenplay when movie fans or tourists were walking around in the First Avenue, they asked the club guide: "...Where are all the halls gone?...", and the guide replied: "...You're standing right in it!..." lol

LOL I think a lot of y'all are reading way too much into things with the dolls and album cover and stuff. ATWIAD is one of my favorite albums (I have it on vinyl) and I don't really find anything missing from it or creepy. Honestly, I see it like an opera with all its drama and moodiness. Like Prince was kind of explaining his artistic/personal point of view while he had the public's attention. Purple Rain was so perfectly commercial that why the heck not for an avant guarde album like this?

EXACTLY those pictures really capture the esscense of this album. They live in a world full of colors but the colors aren't as bright as they are supposed to be. THe world looks like it should make them happy but they look sad. It's kinda like if hell was in heaven.

The characters are static and lifeless as statues, there isn't any suggestion of movement, of anima. Or seem "dead" like I said before. It contrast with the colorful, imaginative world surrounding them in a intrigant way.
