I always got a slightly unhinged/disturbed feel from this album. Especially his delivery of "Come to the park and play with us" in Paisley Park where he sounds like Igor. I actually find those mentioned Halloween scenes to be a good summation of the feel. Much of his material from the 80s had some kind of dark or unhinged element to it in my estimation. The only part of the album I might possibly find a bit creepy is "Temptation", when Prince gets introspective, and particularly when the God voice tells him to die (did NOT care for that). And the music playing at that part was dark. But from a spiritual standpoint, and even musically, the end of the song is resolved.
I always thought Prince was quite masterful with disonance. It is skillfully employed in the song "Paisley Park"--a song I have always loved, find it very energizing and positive, but it contains a few has musical elements that contrast so artfully with the harmonic melodies. That syncopated keyboard (I think it's a keyboard) that plays in the background through out the song starts of very high, and lofty, lifting, but at the point in the song where he talks about the man whose home got condemned, it shifts down and sounds more like...the music you would hear at a carnival in a bad dream. But that musical disharmony is there to communicate the disharmony in the character's unfortunate story--a story all too real for many in real life. It might sound a bit creepy until you realize its there to shed an emotional light on the injustice of poverty. At least, that's my take on it.
I don't find ATWIAD creepy at all, nor does it make me feel paranoid. I find it quite positive really. (And a very enjoyable listening experience.) Only "America" and "Temptation" might be outliers, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them creepy.
I do relate to rdhull's sense of unease that something's missing, but I'm paranoid that in real life we're penned up in an artificially induced dystopia where we are fed food that is no longer sustenance; truth is hidden--or ridiculed; education has more to do with programming than enlightenment; critical thinking is discouraged; and spiritual development is suppressed. There is arguably a lot to be paranoid about but I don't think ATWIAD is one of them.

People seem to be confusing creepy with moody here! There is a mood that is carried throughout the whole album; a difficult trick, perfectly pulled off.
The only Prince song I would consider creepy is "There's Others Here With Us". Now that really does meet that definition. Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.

naw ATWIAD is my favorite album, it not creepy, I was 16 when the album came out immediately went and bought it and fell in love. I was lost in that park scene, and I knew we were in for something wonderful just by the images and characters.
Then the inside painting of the park from a distance, I could see myself walking through there (of course with the powdered face man or the killer clown stalking me) just kidding
Clowns/Carnivals/Circus'/traveling Fairs, in movies books and real life always carry an edge of hidden danger though. hehehe sorry... the short man, the bearded lady (people in cages to be stared at) grotesques, night time, carnivals and amusement parks especially in Haunted House/House of Mirrors.Roller Coasters are made for that... think Pinocchio Pleasure Island & the Travelling Carnival scenes. Have u ever scene the Wiz? Some of the most scariest parts were at the Coney Island parts and then the clownish guy carrying the 'fun' items 2 that grown into the killer clownish things over 7ft tall I remember a 1970s movie about some teens who go to an amusement park and decide to spend the night in the haunted house, one of the creepiest scenes was the end in the daylight we find 1 girl escapes in a car with this 'happy music' playing but it looks like shes been turned into a puppet with a happy face. I will never be able to listen to Mr Sandman again because of Halloween
Prince had a lot of that in his 1999-DreamFactory/SOTT years clowns, images of of parks, Harlequin clowns

i'm with u on that, which is why I wish he would have done more with ATWIAD. And album that gives us that much change from PR has to be presented well in order for people to get it.
If he did more performances of it, more videos with single releases, etc people would have been drawn in. Just like a Parade or Carnival. He did 2 shows prior to Parade, his birthday show(?) that was this secret showand had Sheila E and band, and then the 10.27.1985 Theatre Du Verdure:Pop Life Paisley Park Tempation Go-rehearsed America Paisley Park performed where the America video was shot.
Still my #1 favorite Prince album

If that was to fit with the Parade album, I can sorta see it, because he was fixiated on death. Bad move for the ending of that film, but
Maybe Power Fantastic lyrics sorta explain it a bit

Interesting. I feel something like that too. Good point u r making.
Kinda like being in a utopia of somesort of unatural order and happiness. Does the album ever make u paranoid?
Could relate to especially here. I think, also, it's something in my own reception of the album, I feel a tiny bit of anger, let's say, or something close, about this album, as I think it has so many wonderful songs and musical ideias, yet it's a NEAR-CLOSE classic. It seems something's missing for me. Or maybe it's because, by comparison from 1999 to Lovesexy, ATWIAD goes between all these other albums that seem to be more fully accomplished... -Wtv u heard bout me is true,I change the rules n do what I wanna do.[Im n love w God,He's the only way - NOT!]We know we gotta die some day,so Im gon have fun evr MF night!Im gon 2 another life. How bout u?

Exactly. I feel it too. Don't it seems, also, that the people on the cover are covered corpses? I mean, look at the colors, the people are very somber and of a darker palete than the rest of the pictures. I think that was done on purpose.

Totally agree with rduhll here. I was just going through my own Beatle's love affair and totally got this record. It was "A Love Bizarre" and "Sgt. Pepper" and I couldn't love it more.

EXACTLY those pictures really capture the esscense of this album. They live in a world full of colors but the colors aren't as bright as they are supposed to be. THe world looks like it should make them happy but they look sad. It's kinda like if hell was in heaven.

Has everyone gone mad? The cover is all Prince is different guises.
He was breaking away from Purple Rain.
It's great.

Woah woah. WE ALL LIKE THIS ALBUM OR LOVE IT. Something can be creepy and awesome at the same time. I love creepy. But at times i can' stomach around the world in a day because of the creepiness. It's a different kind of creepiness which makes it strange from prince. The so called creepy parts of purple rain would be the last few seconds of computer blue with the screams of pain or the scream of somebody help me during dmsr. Around the world in a day is just a 360 spin for prince in terms of creepiness.

^^^ Ok...I kinda understand. When this album came out I bought it from WalMart when
I was 15 so maybe I'm jaded a bit because I played it like a junkie. Forgive me for being
defensive, I apologize. I just don't see anything remotely creepy about this record. Only
pure human emotions, which I construe, can be creepy.

RioC., what the hell is the matter with you??
You don't like this fine album, one of the greatest Prince albums, and before you did not like 4TTiYE.
Around The World is amazing, especially the extended versions on 12 inch vinyls..
Paisley Park 6 minutes Pop Life 9 minutes UK Raspberry Beret 7 minutes America 21+ minute She's Always In My Hair.. excellent.. Girl and Hello
the Around The World album is a masterpiece to me, 10/ 10.
so trippy like someone already said..
sounds like his version of the Sgt Pepper album... really great music..

What I meant was, as I talked about the black comedy elements in Prince's songs, if Prince was being a bit subtle with it on ATWIAD, it was perfected in the Parade album. Imo just like ATWIAD, the title track Christopher Tracey's parade is a great introduction to the album. It sounds like a fun, upbeat and exciting tune but towards the end of the song you can feel the quirkiness of some kind, almost as if something went wrong in this Parade. And there is I Wonder U; real simple lyrics and it could have almost been a romantic song but the composition has that obvious eccentric feel to it, making the lyrics sound almost disturbing to listen to. (doesn't mean I don't like it though, I truly love every single song on this album for different reasons) Do U Lie is actually a quite depressing song if you just read the lyrics of it, and Anotherloverholenyohead is not exactly a happy tale either when you really think about it. But Prince decided to come up with such vibrant melodies for both songs, which is very interesting to me. It's almost like he'd rather entertain the audience and make them laugh even with sad stories. It truly became a Parade, a circus a show. I don't necessarily mean that Parade is an eerie album as a whole but it certainly has many layers of emotions.

I find condition of the <3 breaks it aparet a bit. And the little bittty bits of the album make me feel very alone, much in the way that "There is Lonely" does. COurse that song accomplishes it in one track whereas ATWIAD takes a while to make you feel totally lonessome and...kind of...watched. No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ . He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >
