If Prince had auditioned for American Idol... ... what would the judges think of him?? Would he make it to the finals and win it?? "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."
"We had fun, didn't we?" -Prince (1958-2016) 4ever in my life

Moderator | Don't you know?
He wouldn't have: The "right" hair The "right" clothes The "right" height for that matter The "latest" dance moves And don't you know there are no musicians in today's pop world. Simon would say something allong the lines of: "Frankly, your too short, and too old. I mean really. Did you fall into a vat of pubic hair or what?" All Rights Reserved. |

He would Kick Simon's ass. "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

Besides, the whole thing is rigged - not unlike what you hear on the radio today.

Depends on which Prince you're talking about. If it's today's Prince, he wouldn't make it on American Idol because he's an older polished performer with years of experience handling an audience.
If it's the Prince of For You trying to make it on American Idol, he'd make it through the semi-finals before being booted off in favor of an N'Sync type of dude.

he would probably want to shag Paula Abdul Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I think Paula Abdul is a perfectly credible choice to judge vocal talent

Are we talking about the same Prince? There's not a singer in the competition who could sing The Most Beautiful Girl In the World.

Let's see...
Paula would think he's cute Randy would think he's "cool, man" Siomon...well...I'd imagine there'd be some type of altercation between the two But let's remember this is a singing contest...not to say P can't sing...but let's face it, he's no Aretha. ~KiKi

There is no way Prince's undeniable need for total control over his creative output - and everything surrounding his image and persona - would've allowed him to advance very far in a stupid contest/show that's whole premise is based on finding a generic, malleable, publically 'acceptable' individual that the record company can manufacture and contrive even further to then shove down the public's throat for their maximum financial gain.
He and Simon would've had an interesting exchange, I would imagine.

I read in Entertainment Weekley, in an article about Simon, and he said that Purple Rain was one of his top five albums. He said it is a perfect album. So maybe Prince would have Simon in his hip pockect...

How many Prince songs got nominated for a vocal grammy? I know I Hate U was nominated (and should have won - the vocal work was far better than the winner - I forget who won, but the winner had a bigger hit).

I've only watched the show a few times. My family watches it regularly and sometimes I hear it. These three "gods" who sit on Mt. Olympus...their opinions are not the final divine fiat for who can or can't or who is or isn't capable of succeeding as a vocal talent in the music industry- a so called idol. I want to thank alandail for starting this thread because I was thinking this very thing last week in regards to not only Prince, but other artists who've either "made it", had hit records or actually become stars. I thought of how many successful artists would have been booted off the show. Oh God, I'm so negative... .aw hell naw; I just tell it like it is... Paula's a very beautiful lady and probably as sweet as peach cobbler yet I fail to see how she can be a judge of other's vocal talent. Let's put her up there back in the day when she was Miss Hot Thang...she may have been a great dancer and choreographer for Janet Jackson but vocal talent is not one of her strengths, and she had hits and became an idol of sorts. Let's face it- you don't have to be Patti Labelle or Luther Vandross to have hit records. Biz Markie had a hit with Oh Baby you got what I need but you say he's just a friend. Plunk, plunk, plunk on the toy piano. Simon and Randy Jackson would have put Paula through a meat grinder after she got done singing for them. I actually have more respect for Paula as a judge though because at least there's a sense of humility and graciousness about her. Simon can kiss the behinds of everyone he has viciously and unjustly torn down. What does he know? He's more worried about how specifically women look...not their talent. If she's got the boobs, the hair, and the body(her head can be as empty as a whole note rest) and a fairly good voice he thinks that the idol has arrived, but a woman can go on there and sing her heart out with a fantastic voice and because her looks don't fit his criteria he dismisses her. I do think Simon and possibly Randy would have found something to boot Prince off the show for... While I'm thinking of it, does anyone have examples of stars or bands who were rejected and turned down by labels who then went on to accomplish what was said they couldn't? I believe I read once that the Beatles were rejected. Also Prince himself at first. I think I read that Bryan Adams was rejected and he had rejected songs that eventually became hits. OK, I'm done venting for now...I feel better.

Add Dark to my list of Prince songs with great vocal work.
mistermcgee - I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but the Bee Gees were told in the early 70s that nobody wanted to hear groups anymore - that they had had their hits and should hang it up - they even had a whole album they recorded rejected. A year later they came out with Main Course, which they followed up with Children of the World, Here at last Live, Saturday Night Fever, and Spirits Having Flown. Combined, these albums sold around 90 million copies and during this time they wrote seven number 1 singles for themselves and multiple hits for themselves and other artists, as won 6 grammys. If they had listend to the record company and quit recording in the early 70s, none of that success would have happened.
