When the Lights Go Down Appreciation thread

How many love this one?

For me its one of the very best songs he has ever done.

I am guessing its about sex, lol.

I don't know why it ended up on Old friends 4 sale album.

It deserves to be on a great record.

When The Lights Go Down is the fifth track on Prince's 22nd album The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale.

Specific recording dates and studio location are unknown; it is possible that the song was recorded at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, during sessions for the album in 1991-2(assumed), but this has not been verified. Sheila E. is credited as appearing on the album, and while her performance is not known, it is likely she appears playing hand drums on this track (although these were possibly played by Kirk Johnson).

  • Prince - all vocals and instruments, except where noted
  • Sheila E. - hand drums (assumed, possibly played by Kirk Johnson)
  • Michael B. - drums (assumed)
  • Sonny T. - bass guitar (assumed)
  • Levi Seacer, Jr. - guitar (assumed)

Another Friday night
Another tired line

Baby, U sure look good,
Hey baby, what's your sign?
How many ask 4 your number
Before they even know your name?
How many out there tired of playing
This silly o-old time game?

Hey, and when the lights go down
And it's justa U 2
It's when U and your lover, yeah
Do what [... wanna] do

That's when U feel the heat
Hotter than July
That's when U and your baby, baby, baby
When your baby get a ride
Yeah, when your baby get a ride

How can U tell him no
When he loves U so?
Buy U anything
Anything U want
His eyes all aglow
He'll know U抮e good 2 go
Duh-dun

Duh-dun
Duh-dun
In front of a restaurant, yeah

Girl, U抎 better know
Really, until U do it couple o' times in a row
It's just the same
It's just a game
Go back to do whatever, sleep outside your door

When the lights go down, yeah
And it's just U 2
That's when U hear the sounds
Of what true lovers do, yeah
And when U feel the heat, yo
Hotter than July
That's when U and your baby
When your baby get a ride
Yeah, hey, and when your baby get a ride now

Then when your baby get a ride

That's when your baby get a ride
That's when your baby play with U tonight

A Liar Shall Not Tarry In My Presence
I will make you cyber shit in your pants!
What's the matter with your life
Is poverty bringing U down?
Is the mailman jerking U 'round?

I love, love, love this track. My favorite off The Vault.

That long piano intro is faint

The version from Montreux is incredible. I love the guitar work on that version and the way they roll it into Willing and Able is fantastic. If you haven't heard it, track it down!

It's one of my favourite songs to listen to on long, hot summer nights, when you open the windows in the middle of the night and the warm breeze floats through your room...

I got the same feel first time I heard it... Willing & Able, heard it all before etc... But it went on, and I liked it. First listen. It's one of those you play again, straight off, fuck the rest of the album I'll wait, lemme hear that one again.

I've changed my mind after having a refresher.

It's fucking gorgeous. Keys, vocals, lyrics, drums, bass, simple groove. Keys, vocals, keys, vocals, keys.

It's fuckin gorgeous.

I thought the lyrics were:

How can U tell him no
When he loves U so?
Buy U anything
Anything U want
His eyes all aglow
He'll know you're good 2 go
Dinner in
Dinner in
Dinner in
the finest restaurants, yeah.

Makes sense to me?

Best song ever. For the longest time I thought I read that was a cover of someone elses song. I don't know why. confuse
