Best Linn/drum programming Prince Has Done? I know this has been done a million times, but I really don't care. Any way...what songs have the most EPIC drum programming by Prince? A list of 20 songs would be perfect! I'm starting to get very interested in this instrument.
I also have another question, I don't know if I just read this in a wrong way or something (I don't even remember where I read it), but why is the LinnDrum looked down upon? I mean, it sounds great! Oh well, the most important thing is question I presented in the 1st paragraph .

777-9311 The Ballad of Dorothy Parker When Doves Cry Nasty Girl
These are just the first few that spring to mind, there are many others! The Linndrum is definately not looked down upon IMO, maybe only by people who want hyperrealistic drums. I still use a Linndrum in my own productions, it is a lifesaver! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "The Dance Electric". It's the LM-1 on speed! "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

Slightly off topic, but when discussing Prince's use of the Linn drum, keep in mind that there are differences between the LM-1 (which Prince used prominently) and the LM-2 (which is referred to as the LinnDrum since it says LinnDrum on the top left of the machine). The two machines sound totally different.
With the LM-1, all of the drum voices are tunable in pitch. With the LM-2, only the snare, congas, and toms are tunable. The sidestick on the LM-2 is similar to the rimshot on the LM-1, but the tuning is tied to the snare (e.g., when you tune the snare, you also tune the sidestick).
While Prince primarily used the LM-1, he also used the LinnDrum (LM-2), notably on "Strange Relationship". The toms at the beginning of the song are a dead giveaway. The toms on the LM-1 sound stiffer, like on the beginning of "The Beautiful Ones." The LM-2 toms are "bouncier" like at the beginning of "Strange Relationship".
I happen to own two LM-1s and a LinnDrum. Anyone who hasn't seen either of these should search YouTube. There are quite a few LM-1 and LM-2 demos on there. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

That always gets my vote. Outstanding. "He's a musician's musician..."

I always thought the Linn was used on Alphabet Street too.
Some of my favorite Linn beats not already mentioned are:
Rimshot on Let's Go Crazy 1999 Lady Cab Driver (Live from 1999 tour) Heaven
He loved to use a flanger with the Linn as well.
I've got a Linn Drum LM-2 sitting here collecting dust. I bought it years ago for $65. It worked ok but it had a high pitched whine/squeal that drove me nuts. So like a dumb ass I opened it up and tore it apart trying to fix it. I got busy with other things and never put it back together. Now years later I tried my best to put it all back together but I still have the noise and seems like nothing works right anymore. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker FTW! The fills alone should qualify it as the blueprint on how to program drums to sound as if a drummer played them.

For me the Sign o the Times album has his best drum programming especially Dorothy Parker HOT thing Forever in my life Play in the Sunshine is amazing too although doesn't sound 'programmed' cause the patterns are all over the place.. Sounds like he's punching the buttons along to the song live, like its a kit! It's rad

If you ever want to get your Linn Drum working, consider sending it to Bruce Forat. He worked with Roger Linn back in the day, and he's the go-to guy tech guy for all things Linn. I bought an LM-2 on Craigslist that was DOA (the batteries had leaked acid onto the power supply). I took it to two local techs, and they couldn't fix it, but Bruce brought it back from the dead. I'm about to send one of my LM-1s to him to fix a few issues as well.
