What's Prince's Problem? Does he actually want to lose all of his fans?
Let me put this in context.
I'm absolutely obesessed with the production and musicianship on Prince's work. So much so that I re-created "777-9311" note-for-motherfucking-note. This was first of all an experiment in production. I picked "777-9311" because it has many of the trademark Prince sounds of that time - the linn drum beat, the Yamaha CP-80 glissandos, the layered rhythm guitar parts, the uniquely Prince style slap bass, the layered snappy oberheim synth lines, the vocal effects etc. I put a huge amount of effort into this and I must say it was spot on. Every bass and guitar lick, every drum fill, every single god damn thing was there, even the stuff you wouldn't notice unless you listened really hard. I even went so far as to sample each individual drum sound from the original and then re-program the beat in MIDI with those samples. That's how much I love this music.
Secondly, this was a tribute to the man and a celebration of the style he created back then.
You would think that seeing a young person with this much passion for his music would make him proud. You'd think he'd be happy to see someone of my generation keeping his funk alive.
It was on Youtube for about 2 months. It got removed 2 days ago - "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Controversy Music."
Why does Prince treat his fans this way? We buy his music, we go to his shows, we spend countless hours trying to re-create "777-9311" and this is the thanks we get. We show him appreciation for what he has given us. Shouldn't he show us appreciation for the support we show him?
Furthermore, does he want to be forgotten forever? If he keeps up this over-the-top policing of the internet then that's what will happen and that would be a real shame.

This behavior will make you love him for it. Better get used to those bruises..it's a representation of love from him to us and as Imago says, we love the abuse..we love him for that. In time you will see. Youll get it. Youll understand. You'll be one of us..one of us..one of us..one of.... "Climb in my fur."

I think you may be alone on that last one!

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

If he didnt hurt us, it would mean he didnt love us. He only does this because he cares and loves us. Plus its not so bad. It isnt as bad as you make it eoin. It doesnt happen all the time..only once ina while. "Climb in my fur."

I think, with all due respect, you are the one with the problem.
I wish I could have seen your take, but did you do it because you loved the music, or did you do it so you could get adulation on the internet? If it's for the former, then you shouldn't be too bummed Prince took it off. If it's the latter, you shouldn't be surprised that Prince took it off YouTube. As a Jehovah's Witness, idolatry is something he doesn't accept.
If you're that big a fan of Prince, you had to have known by now that he takes down all of his stuff posted on YouTube. That's no secret. I don't agree with what he does, but I know that he does it.
I'm sure you put in hours of work on that, and I hope you were happy with the finished product. Judging from the comments on the Artists forum about it, you obviously did a great job.
But Prince being Prince, all he (or his people) saw was a copyright issue and he apparently has the law on his side. He certainly has YouTube on his side because they take down everything he asks them to.
There are other video forums you might try, if you're looking for feedback. But if you are a good enough musician to have played all the parts on that kickass song (except, I understand, the drums), then you are definitely good enough to be playing that song and others in front of audiences.
Prince can't stop that, and if you haven't done it before let me assure you - playing in front of an audience is the best thing ever. Positive comments on the internet can't compare to live applause.
Best of luck! | |

but then there's all these other artists who don't seem to mind fans covering their songs. in fact, they just see it as a compliment.
beck recently released that new 'album' called songreader. which was just sheetmusic, no physical, actual album.
some people recorded a (to my ears quite horrible) version/cover of one of those songs and beck even put it on his official website, thanking them
now can you imagine prince doing something like that?
prince wouldn't put your song on his website (he doesn't even put his own songs on his own website).
instead he'd come to your house and slap your face so hard you'd have to wear shades to work until christmas.
the next day he'd put up a coversong on his website though. sung by hannah. or shelby.

For someone who has for the past 20 years banged on about nobody playing real instruments anymore. He really seems to enjoy kicking other (non-professional) artists in the teeth.

Like I said, I did it for two reasons.
1. The production and musicianship to me is mind blowing and very elusive. I was determined to figure out exactly how all those sounds were made and see if I could reproduce them. I knew there are other musicians and producers all over the world that feel the same way about this music and I thought that making a video to go with the recording would be a good way of sharing it with them.
2. I thought maybe Prince or the guys from The Time or The Revolution might see it. I thought it would be a nice way to show them just how much the music they were a part of means to musicians even 30 years later. I thought it woule be cool for them to know that they still inspire people today. I felt like I owed them something because the 80s Prince stuff is the most magical music for me.
Since it got removed, there's a chance Prince saw it but it's unlikely. I doubt Prince has the time to be searching the net for stuff to remove. He's got people that do that for him obviously.

FIRST THING THAT POPPED IN MY HEAD!!!!!!! lmao this is us(fans) but i may add that ive never actually felt "victimized" or anything like that or felt the need to rant cause i dont do anything but listen to the music. But would be cool if we could get his music on youtube yeahhh [Edited 3/19/13 12:02pm] welp

You probably accomplished both goals, whether you know it or not. Actually, you definitely accomplished #1; at least, you apparently DID reproduce them and quite well at that. Was your video just a video of the song, or was it a "How I Did This" kind of video?
It's tough to get Prince to to hear anything but he does listen to stuff. That's how he found most of the people he's worked with over the last 10 years or so.
I think if you wanted to get something in front of someone, you'd have better luck reaching anyone from The Time.

First of all, djj said some really kind words. But Rodeo also has a point: even if what eoin did was meant as a tribute, it's still a violation of copyright, so you can expect this to happen. The best thing I can advise you is to learn from Prince and then make your own music. No one can take that away from you.

I enjoyed the 777-9311 video by the way. I would not let it bother you. Prince made most of his money from people buying his music and videos. The fact that all of it can be had for free on the internet has in some ways forced him to change the way he operates as an artist. So he is just trying to control it a little bit, or as much as he can. And if he takes one thing down, he has to take it all down.
I remember when John Blackwell did a little bit of this beat during one of the soundchecks for the ONA tour and I got chillls - it sounded so good!!
