Does he actually want to lose all of his fans?

Let me put this in context.

I'm absolutely obesessed with the production and musicianship on Prince's work. So much so that I re-created "777-9311" note-for-motherfucking-note. This was first of all an experiment in production. I picked "777-9311" because it has many of the trademark Prince sounds of that time - the linn drum beat, the Yamaha CP-80 glissandos, the layered rhythm guitar parts, the uniquely Prince style slap bass, the layered snappy oberheim synth lines, the vocal effects etc. I put a huge amount of effort into this and I must say it was spot on. Every bass and guitar lick, every drum fill, every single god damn thing was there, even the stuff you wouldn't notice unless you listened really hard. I even went so far as to sample each individual drum sound from the original and then re-program the beat in MIDI with those samples. That's how much I love this music.

Secondly, this was a tribute to the man and a celebration of the style he created back then.

You would think that seeing a young person with this much passion for his music would make him proud. You'd think he'd be happy to see someone of my generation keeping his funk alive.

It was on Youtube for about 2 months. It got removed 2 days ago - "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Controversy Music."

Why does Prince treat his fans this way? We buy his music, we go to his shows, we spend countless hours trying to re-create "777-9311" and this is the thanks we get. We show him appreciation for what he has given us. Shouldn't he show us appreciation for the support we show him?

Furthermore, does he want to be forgotten forever? If he keeps up this over-the-top policing of the internet then that's what will happen and that would be a real shame.

Thoughts?

Ahh walshy, I downloaded it about a week ago and have it on my ipod. It was really brilliant what you did. He should realise the only people looking for things like this own the music already.

When it comes down to something like this, you got to hand it to Prince. He's a prize tool.

Prince did put up an instrumental and asked fans to add lyrics, vocals, remix it, and he posted three winners on his website as downloads, back in 2001.

I enjoyed the 777-9311 video by the way. I would not let it bother you. Prince made most of his money from people buying his music and videos. The fact that all of it can be had for free on the internet has in some ways forced him to change the way he operates as an artist. So he is just trying to control it a little bit, or as much as he can. And if he takes one thing down, he has to take it all down.

I remember when John Blackwell did a little bit of this beat during one of the soundchecks for the ONA tour and I got chillls - it sounded so good!!

Having P's music for free off the internet shouldn't be the same as Eoin doing a cover song of Prince Tool unless Eoin was trying to make a profit off of it which he wasn't!!! mad rolleyes

I see youtube videos all the time of someone simply playing a Prince song with one particular instrument such as the bass, the guitar, or the drums, or singing acapella and they seem to stay up on youtube. If you recreated the entire song to the point that it was taken down, then it must have been good.

If you're capable of recreating it that good, then why not use those same instruments to make your own original songs. That's what we as the public desire, more new original music of that sound, not recreations and tributes. Make your own songs with that sound and you're onto something. The bitch may own his songs but he doesn't own the sound.

Andy is a four letter word.

I think, with all due respect, you are the one with the problem.

I wish I could have seen your take, but did you do it because you loved the music, or did you do it so you could get adulation on the internet? If it's for the former, then you shouldn't be too bummed Prince took it off. If it's the latter, you shouldn't be surprised that Prince took it off YouTube. As a Jehovah's Witness, idolatry is something he doesn't accept.

If you're that big a fan of Prince, you had to have known by now that he takes down all of his stuff posted on YouTube. That's no secret. I don't agree with what he does, but I know that he does it.

I'm sure you put in hours of work on that, and I hope you were happy with the finished product. Judging from the comments on the Artists forum about it, you obviously did a great job.

But Prince being Prince, all he (or his people) saw was a copyright issue and he apparently has the law on his side. He certainly has YouTube on his side because they take down everything he asks them to.

There are other video forums you might try, if you're looking for feedback. But if you are a good enough musician to have played all the parts on that kickass song (except, I understand, the drums), then you are definitely good enough to be playing that song and others in front of audiences.

Prince can't stop that, and if you haven't done it before let me assure you - playing in front of an audience is the best thing ever. Positive comments on the internet can't compare to live applause.

Best of luck!

He wears a symbol of himself around his neck. Come on Greg. lol

Appreciating one's spiritual connection (art) is NOT idolatry.

And if Prince truly feels that way, then he needs to solve the problem himself, by quitting the biz and disappearing from public view. Then, no will can "idolize" him like the jw's frown upon.

Wait...on the other hand...who else could dig deep into their pockets to build that new wing on the back of his elder's crib??? The jw's are pimping him out and this is his way of trying to remain in control of his work.

What`s your problem? Your problem is : you don`t write and produce your own music. In his world.

I am sure that, in fact you do, it`s just he doesn`t like you to copy his stuff.

That`s not too hard to understand, or is it?

i don't think prince really has the right to ban other peoples performances of his songs .. i think he just has lawyers that will cost you too much to fight

prince covers songs all the time ... i don't think p did crimson or wild thing any favors by covering them .. who gave him permission?

theoretically this could have to do with his jw strictness and the overtly exploitative past of an image he wants his new fans never to see

or

he really wants his wb related work not being promoted so that he can do it himself once he has the rights or simply just to spite wb

i can understand him wanting to seem more mature grown up and less gay hooker in a g string .. except the pj bottoms and skirt shirts he wears these days aren't a whole lot better

i think he has just reached that ripe old out of touch and hypocritical phase of his life where he pretty much contradicts himself while genuinely believing he is really a nice guy ... he does after all .. flaunt his elite class wealth .. it's not like he wants to have anything to do with real people anymore

Who needs money if you got rich friends, right?

I remember an article in a newspaper that argued that Prince his legacy was not just musically, but merely about how to make money as a musician.

No matter how obnoxious it's for fans, he did probably paved ways for later musicians to make some money. Or am I just wanting to be to positive now?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Isn't everyone hypocritical and contradictory in one way or another? Don't we all think we're 'nice'? It's just magnified with P. I know I wouldn't want a million twats picking the bones out of everything I said or did. We all know what he's like about his stuff and the net. Over the top.

eoin, I liked your video and had thought that I could use it for learning how to play some of those parts myself later. Too bad that it's gotten taken down.

It's hard to see what the "logic" for the removal for certain videos from Youtube are. The "team" that he's supposedly hired seems to get them removed in a fairly arbitrary manner. There are some clips of more popular songs by him that have had plenty of views and still stay up there. It's pretty much the same stuff that always gets recommended on the side pane, at least in my case. Maybe Prince himself has told to leave certain videos there, I don't know.

It's pretty absurd to think that there would be some sort of a "loss of income" resulting from someone recreating a song by The Time for Youtube. I think the laws in these matters should be changed - unless you can prove in reasonable terms that the reproduciton of copyrighted material harms you in a significant manner you should not have a basis for legal action. This is what the term "fair use" to me indicates anyway.

The classic Americanism is to resist oppresion and fight for freedom.

What you point to is rentseeking oppression.
