The full version of Computer Blue is one of my fav songs by anyone. Even at over 12 minutes long, it never becomes dull. The feelings of loneliness, despair, desire, confusion, love and hate are all captured perfectly. And it's a stone cold groove to boot!

And the albun version is perfect
the long versions of course are good but the concise edited released version makes the song perfect as it never meanders "Climb in my fur."

I don´t know about that but this song here sounds like it influenced Computer Blue a little bit.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I'm looking for that old q&a from love4oneanother (?) where someone asked him about the meaning of Computer Blue and he said something like "It hasn't revealed itself yet" or something to that effect..... If my memory serves me right. Can't seem to find it. He also talked about the meaning behind Starfish and coffee -again iirc-. Anyone? Thanks.

I've always hated the simulated fellatio stage choreography during Computer Blue in Purple Rain. This and the "toss the woman in the dumpster" scene. That being said, I love the song Computer Blue. Heard the 14 minute long version a couple of years ago. Too bad that version didn't make onto the soundtrack.

Cool song. I hadn't heard it before. I hear the similarity to Computer Blue as well. That Ohio Players album cover takes me back too. One of my older sisters had the Fire album and Honey, I think. I used to stare at those pictures all the time as a kid. Maybe I should've spent more time listening to the music.

Believe it or not Computer Blue is my least fav song on PR
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It used to be my least favorite when I was 12. These days it´s one of my favorites and Baby I´m a Star is my least favorite. Most folks dislike Take Me With U but I still love that song. And among the hardcore fans it seems to have become cool to dislike Purple Rain or prefer some other album over Purple Rain because Purple Rain is regarded as a commercial, pandering to the masses album but it will always be my favorite Prince album followed by Around the World in a Day and 1999. I love Sign of the Times but I will always consider 1982-1985 my favorite Prince era, and the lyrics were among the most romantic and heartfelt ones.
I love Computer Blue but for various reasons it is one of the few songs that I don´t ever want to hear live these days, or maybe the ONLY favorite song of mine that I never want to hear live.
Why do you dislike Computer Blue?
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Absolutely. It is a brilliant, timeless masterpiece (though I hate using that word here on the org ) but at the same time it is one of those favorite songs of mine that I don´t want to hear live for the very reasons you mentioned above, that, and some other reasons. This is one of those songs that captures the essence of Prince, in my opionion. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Review of Purple Rain by Prince and the Revolution
Computer Blue” is another Purple Rain highlight. With a solo from Prince and an unobtrusive rhythm section, we get to hear the intricacies of his guitar skills.

In this case, I agree with you wholeheartedly. And you're right, it is a great example of all things Prince.

Every Prince and protege album, back then, had at least 1 standout track that felt like Prince was about to break into something new, definately a defining moment in Purple Music, that I just never heard on anyone elses album. Sometimes it's a simple song, sometimes complex
a few examples: I Don't Want 2 Leave U(the Time), Dear Michaelangelo(Romance 1600) Screams of Passion(the Family) Computer Blue(Purple Rain) Sexuality(Controversy) Power Fantastic* just to name a few...

I'm glad you mentioned Dear Michaelangelo. I don't hear it being discussed a lot, but I always loved it. I didn't hear it until some time in the 90's, but it quickly became my favorite on that album along with Toy Box and A Love Bizarre, of course. Parts of it sound as if it would've fit nicely on either Batman or Lovesexy.

I could be wrong,
but I think Prince said something like "Computer Blue is the coldest song I have made".
I love the track deeply, it's a classic. One of his most "rocking" tracks.
This is the Prince I love. Prince 4Ever.

This song deserves far more recognition then it gets, only the hardcore Prince fans seem 2 know just how good it is.

Purple Rain IS Prince's masterwork. He did not pander to the masses at all with that record. The masses just caught up to what he was doing .

I've met a few people in the last year, who aren't hardcore fans but fans of the 1999/Purple Rain music who have said some wonderful things about Computer Blue, and almost pissed themselves when i told them about longer versions released.

WB shoulda released the LONG version of Computer Blue b/w the slightly longer version of Darling Nikki!!!!!!

I think I remember that too, will look for the quote

I thought that was said about Darling Nikki?

that sounds like it influenced a LOT of Prince songs. "Do you really know what love is?"
