Seems to know Prince pretty good. HOWEVER, while I did like Housequake, I don't know if I recall it quite like this..

Housequake.com, was the greatest fansite in history. The ground it covered with its resources and historical data concerning the Purple One's career was invaluable to fans. Instead of being flattered, he felt betrayed and fought the site. It's gone forever now.

I'd never seen the Jessie interview they linked to before. Pretty cool stories about life with Prince. Interesting that he referred to it as "hell."

it was a pretty dang good fansite. they had a great eye for design, as well as some passionate and knowledgable folks. the .org is great, too, but in a different way. it's cool that housequake is at least on facebook.

To be honest, Prince has made many a dic*ish move over the years but the one that bothered me most was the name change, The man flat out lie and said it was for spiritual reasons and Ibacked him 100%. Defended the man and respected that decision. When he admitted it was all about Warner Brothers and the almighty dollar, everything changed. I'm one of the most forgiving people in the world but for some reason that crossed a line. Spirtitual reasons, I supported and admired. Great acting job with Oprah on that one. That's when I learned it wasn't about the expression of his art but rather the almighty dollar. The Prince that I admired showed that he had checked out on his fans...

AGREED!!!

Not letting The Time or The Family use their band names is up there too.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I listened to almost the whole Kevin Smith clip. I've always thought Prince was a little batty and a of course very arrogant, but I thought a lot of it was to keep up appearances. However, that clip made it sound as if there really is a "disconnect." wacky

It's funny because back in 1993 when all of this was taking place, I believed it too. I changed my mind around 1996ish or so when he did the Oprah interview. By that time, we all knew that something was seriously wrong with his son. But, the interview was so creepy (I pay very close attention to body language), and both he and Mayte were OBVIOUSLY acting. The shifty eye movements, the intense staring at Mayte when she was speaking as if he was hoping she wouldn't say something out-of-line, the overall vibe of the interviews....all served to just put me off.

But, it was obvious around that time that the symbol 'coming to him in a dream' and him claiming to be possibly 'a gender-neutral being taking the name of the symbol' and having multiple personalities, and all of that nonsense was just Prince doing theater, and that the symbol was his artistic and insane way of trying to get what he wanted out of a contract he signed.

The topper for me was the release of Rave Un2 which was so blatantly an artistic compromise in order to score a hit--a hit that would never come--that I just came to realze the artist of the 80s who some critics admired so much because he didn't seem to care how many records he was selling so long as he was expressing a pure vision...had shifted so far towards trying to generate money that he was largely unrecognizable from his 80's persona.

The late 90s was also around the same time that the first wave of Prince fansites started to get shut down, and Prince took a much stronger anti-piracy stance. It's not so much the stance that was troublesome, it was the reach of it. Prince.org's gallery as it stands is a perfect example of how far Prince went to 'protect his brand." To dissalow even photographs of you, whether you have the jurisdiction to do so or not, may or may not be in your rights, but it's certainly something only a CUNT would do to the extent Prince has."

He's turned into something so disspointing to me over the years that I remain fascinated by him only in the sense that he's really turned into a musical version of Andy Warhol. The Andy before his assassination attempt was pure art (not really good art, but art anyway). The Andy after the attempt was pure business.

Prince was a douchebag before the symbol years--but he was such a genius at it, and seemed focus primarily on the musicology of it. The Prince post-symbol years is an even bigger douchebag but with a far less impressive offering of music.

And who the fuck throws somebody elses' guitar into the air and damages it without some kind of public apology?

housequake.com was really the greatest place,

such a great fansite cool

with hard facts info, it was a place with a lot of great people..

not like the Org, which seems to be for newbies. And weirdoes.. (like myself, sorry). razz

I was shocked and finally devastated when Prince made his attacks on HQ, with his silly demands.. to remove a pic, a header and/ or other completely silly demands. He even wanted to have our avatars removed..

- I was so shocked, finally when he made the owner to shut the site down.

Prince really is a dickhead. I believe it was early or mid 2007.

I saw Prince in London at the O2 in 2007, and his song Housequake "do u know about the quake", this had a whole new and very sad meaning.

I was sooo sad, back then, and -- still is.. I will never forgive him to attack such a beatiful site, HQ.com with those threats and lawsuits.

That was really embarrassing... a hard time to be and continue to be a fan of him.

mad sad sad sad

I really liked Housequake too. Aaron and the moderators put a lot of time and effort into that site. The conversations were well informed, and generally respectful. People would get banned if they got too nasty towards others, so the discussions were level headed. Prince ain't perfect that's for sure. I'm glad he's still kicking and making music though. I guess that's the reason we keep coming back.

The vocal snippet that opens and closes in Arrested Development's "Tennessee" was an uncleared sample of Prince’s “Alphabet Street.” According to Speech, Prince’s lawyers waited until the song became obscenely popular to call up and demand their cut, to the tune of $100,000.

That doesn't seem dickish to me. They sampled without permission, and they paid a price.

I'm almost certain that this article was written by one of the disgruntled dicks from the Org. The only weird or amazing thing to me is that these people continue to call themselves fans. Weird, indeed. Prince is a dick, his music is terrible, but they love him, and...Prince is the one with issues? Okay.

Not that he hasn't done that himself, of course. But in this case, maybe he or someone in his camp didn't hear it until it broke big?

AsylumUtopia

I don't want to defend Prince's dickish behaviour but that article is really crap, most of what they cite as dickish behaviour is either debateable or understandable, and they leave out some class examples of really dickish behaviour.

1. He hoards his best material.
Debateable. I know it's all a matter of personal taste, but of all the bootlegs I have (and I think I have pretty much the same load everyone else has) there might be maybe 2 albums worth of material that stands up to his best released work.

2. He totally stole "Kiss" back from another band.
Yes, and gave them an entire album of music. Who the fuck would ever have heard of Mazarati otherwise?

3. He fired his manager because he was cold.
It may well be true, but putting "or so the story goes" in just makes it hearsay, which is all it is.

4. He treated The Time like shit.
At a time when he was still trying to establish himself. Anyone trying to establish themselves would not allow a band that they put together as a favour for a friend to upstage them. Not particularly nice behaviour, but show me a musician in a similar position, serious about establishing themselves, who doesn't react similarly and I'll show you a moron.

5. He was weird to Kevin Smith.
But not really any weirder than he's been to anyone else. And he didn't make Smith work for free, Smith (as he makes abundantly clear when he talks about it) didn't ask to be paid before, during, or afterwards.

6. Prince hates his fans.
I'm not really sure he does. He often treats them with disdain, but they often deserve it. He also often provides them with exactly what they ask for.
Having said that, this point is really about his attack on the fan sites, so I don't really disagree with it - the first of the 7 points that really belongs in a list of Prince dickish moments. I do however disagree with Housequake being "the greatest fansite in history". I never cared much for it, although was still pretty angry at it's demise, for obvious reasons.
I also disagree with: "just try searching for any live performance or recorded material. IMPOSSIBLE!"
Only impossible if the following 2 statements are true:
- you believe youtube is the only place on the internet to find videos
- you are incapable of using a search engine

7. The websites.
Have to agree with this one, except for the inaccuracy: "We remember shelling out $100 for a "lifetime" membership to the NPG Music Club in 2005".

I think "We" remember incorrectly. The year of lifetime membership was $25, the previous years were $100 for one year, and that the charge was $100 for 1 year's membership was made abundantly clear (unlike the final year which wasn't a membership fee at all, it was, if you recall, a 'donation' - now that's dickish, donations are what charities get, not rich musicians).

Why didn't any of the following make the list:

- non provision of DRM codes for legally purchased music after NPGMC was shut down (technically illegal, and I am still astounded that no class action suit was brought against him for this. On the other hand, anyone with half a brain created drm-free copies of anything they bought)

- LotusFlower 'free' t-shirts that weren't actually free unless you live in the US

- LotusFlower 'free' t-shirts that never arrived

Ok, I know LotusFlower was mentioned, but only in relation to lack of content, and as I have pointed out before, although nobody could be happy with the content provided versus what was promised, the content on there (if you had to pay for it piecemeal) would have cost at least $77, and anyone intent on making sure they got at least some of their money's worth still has all their LotusFlower content.

- ordering one of his thugs to smash a (now presumably ex) fan's camera for (legally) taking a picture of him

- not bothering his arse to sort out the mess of the croke park concert until less than a week to go, despite never having had any intention of turning up and having known for months that tons of tickets were being sold

- suing the mother of dancing youtube child

- using that fucking laughably idiotic Web Sheriff to issue cease and desists

Clearly, I have too much time on my hands this evening, but I'm glad I got all that off my chest. I'll go and do something useful now.

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

The money part is not dickish. It's the way it is. It's business. If it's not your shit legaly, and the legal owner tells you "NO", that's that.

But as with anything, if you want something bad enough there is always the court system. So as far as the far as The Time and The Family, they can do what the Lone Ranger did.

From Wikipeda

In 1979, the owner of the Ranger character, Jack Wrather, obtained a court order prohibiting Moore from making future appearances as The Lone Ranger.[4] Wrather anticipated making a new film version of the story, and did not want the value of the character being undercut by Moore's appearances. Also, Wrather did not want to encourage the belief that the 65-year-old Moore would be playing the role in the new picture. This move proved to be a public relations disaster. Moore responded by changing his costume slightly and replacing the Domino mask with similar-looking Foster Grant wraparound sunglasses, and by counter-suing Wrather. He eventually won the suit, and was able to resume his appearances in costume, which he continued to do until shortly before his death.

You guys don't really believe that this is anything but an automated service, do you? I work for a company that looks after the online activity for a bunch of different bands and musicians, including their YouTube channels, and its not uncommon for us to get a takedown notice from the artist's own record label. It's just the way the way their software works.

Sure he does, but this is different, and as I just tried to explain: All labels/publishers do it, and do it blindly. I've seen the exact note that Wendy & Lisa posted countless times.
