Cool thread, but this doesn't make much sense. The synths Prince has used are keyboard instruments and when you hear, say, an organ or an electronic piano sound on a Prince record it very often comes from a synth.

edit - or do you mean like synths being a "subset" of keyboards, so that the answer to the "best keyboard riff" could contain just about anything played on a keyboard instrument including synths, whereas the answer to best synth riff just refers to synths?

[Edited 3/9/13 23:56pm]

Novabrkr, I know it's a bit misleading, but I was thinking something on these terms:

The synthesizer proportionates the emulation of the sound texture of many instruments, so that a synth riff may be thought of as something of a sound texture that deviates from the sound of traditional keyboard instruments (piano, organ, Fender rhodes, more traditional electric keyboard sounds) and is more close to the imitation of an instrument or even of a new/strange/computerized/artificial sound texture no instrument has.

Examples:

Uptown

Do it all night

Feel U up (original version)

Something in the water

All the critics love u in NY

When doves cry

Erotic city

17 days

Pop life (backing the chorus)

Sexual suicide

It

Positivity

The Future (backing the chorus)

Loose!

Pussy control

Billy Jack Bitch

New world

Black sweat

Beginning Endlessly

Lavaux

And a keyboard riff as anything, from a piano to an electric keyboard, that nevertheless resembles the sound of any keyboard instrument.

Not exactly a QUICK game, but here's my shot

Best album: 1999

Best song: You gotta be kidding me -- one song!? Adore

Most influential album: Purple Rain

Most musically rich (meaning varied genres) album: Controversy (yes, I'm serious -- funk, rockabilly, pop, experimental, rock. Take that sign of the times!)

Best funk song: Let's Work

Best dance song: Erotic City

Best pop uptempo: Kiss
Best pop downtempo: Pop Life

Best soul song: That's a tough one. I'm going with Insatiable, even though it's really more R&B

Best neo-soul song (an additional category): And God Created Woman... (although technically it came out before neo-soul existed as a genre)

Best ballad: Adore

Best slowtempo song (not a ballad): Anna Stesia (it's probably technically a ballad, but it's not a love ballad)

Best rock song: I'm Yours (it would've been Wall of Berlin but the chorus is terrible)

Best rockabilly-like song: Horny Toad

Best jazzy song: Xogenous

Best lyrics: If I Was Your Girlfriend

Best outtake: 1,000 Hugs & Kisses

(unreleased on the first intended project)

Most innovative composition: East (even though I don't like it much)

(in a musical aesthetic diff than anything before)

Most intricate/creative composition: 1999 (his best 1 man band jam, well musically 1 man)

Best vocal performance: God (vocal version, of course)

Best keyboard riff: 1999

Best synth riff: still don't understand what you're getting at here compared to the keyboard riff, but I'll say Billy Jack Bitch since I get 2 chances for the keyboard/synth

Best guitar riff: She's Always in My Hair

Best bass line: The Stick (if it has to be a Prince song, then Let's Work)

Best horn riff: $ (those lines near the end)

Best percussion/beat: Shhh (it's not the beat, but the percussion/drums)

Best guitar solo: Kiss

Best accompanying string arrangement: Parade, the album

Best accompanying horn arrangement: It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night

Best accompanying keyboard arrangement: What does this even mean?

Best 70s song: I Wanna Be Your Lover

Best 80s song: Adore

Best 90s song: 7 (there were so many good songs from that 1993-95 period that I'd be up all night if I had to choose one, so I went to an entirely different album)

Best 00s song: If Eye Was the Man in UR Life

Best 70s album: Prince

Best 80s album: 1999

Best 90s album: The Gold Experience

Best 00s album: The Aftershow: It Ain't Over! (and if that doesn't count, then Musicology)

Worst/least favorite song: The Rainbow Children (I can't believe I chose this over Jughead, but I did)

Worst/least favorite album: The Rainbow Children (yes, lyrics matter, and you can't call women, namely 1/2 of humanity, second class citizens)

I actually think his best outtake is Old Friends 4 Sale, but this one is near close. Do U think it should've been included in Purple Rain? I think, although it's a GREAT song, PR is a very balanced album (and that is one of its greatest qualities), evey song is very different, and Electric Intercourse, being included, would compete with The Beautiful Ones.

Yes, the lyrics are insanely good. Something in the water is one of my top 10 favorite Prince songs. Actually, I have the impression that when he screams near the end, the volume was augmented in the mixing. Don't you think? If there's people around, I tend to listen to it loudly, but dimish volume near the scream so people don't get frightened. It's a hell of a scream!

Best guitar riff: Glam Slam

Glam Slam has really grown on me lately. Such a great song. It's also a good contender for most intricate/creative composition and for best keyboard arrangement, as it is for best guitar riff. So many great things about it.

I agree, the song would compete with Beautiful Ones and that too is an excellent song (Its my favourite off Purple Rain and in my Top 10 (Its about number 8 or 9). The only way Electric Intercourse could be accommodated would be if Purple Rain had been an extended 2 or 3 disc album with all the Time, Apollonia 6 and Modernaires songs on it, too, so the onus being off Prince and the Revolution a bit.

I also think EI got the axe too, as it was just too draining and maybe a bit too over the top for Purple Rain, maybe Apollonia was not worth it (But I can see him singing it to Vanity) and also the one performance we have live (August 3rd 1983 show) the energy of the song has him sweating and it nearly drains him, its such a great song, but also a very demanding one and it shows.

Could you have imagined it every night on the Purple Rain tour as well.

If you love this era of out takes, you should really check out the 15 minute version of computer bluwe if you haven't already, that is awesome!

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
