As others have said, isn't this just "17" from 1-800-New-Funk? Why is she acting like he sat down and composed this for her?

The odds of her knowing about 17 or 1-800-NEW-FUNK are tiny. I'm sure she has no clue...

They're probably better odds than me even knowing who Tamron Hall is. Who is Tamron Hall?

Tamron Hall is a journalist on MSNBC and Lawrence O'Donnell's girlfriend.

I guess she digs Prince but is probably not a fanatic that knows his every move.

Lovely lady...

lol yeah I know... I wonder did he or his people say something to her when they gave her the song to make her think that?

Also, assuming he offered it to her, and not say some member of her production team said, "I found this cool song let's see if we can get a license for it," it's interesting that he would license/allow them to use it for many reasons. 1. Does Eric Leeds get paid off this license since it's a Madhouse track? 2. Given Prince's apolitical stance as a JW, interesting that he would give music to such a partisan network/show.

He recently worked with Van Jones during the welcome 2 chicago events, so...

As far as the song goes, is it the original version or a tweaked version like he's been doing lately with some of his older songs? I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

[/quote. Eric will get paid if he is credited as a writer and what does being a Jw have to do with the music being used on a news program

Those were questions... if Tamran Hall is to be believed this isn't just the case of "music being used on a news program" but music being GIVEN to the program to use as its theme song. That suggests a greater level of involvement by Prince than usual. I ask about the JW thing because Prince has cited that as a basis for "not having a dog in this fight" re: politics, yet MSNBC is a very left leaning pro-Obama station. (Van Jones is more politically neutral.)

Just questions... thank you for your answer smile

I think she's being a little bit toung-in-cheek as far as it being composed for the show.

Fact is, there are hundreds of radio shows that use popular music as their opening/theme song across the country every day.

Just requires a compulsory license payment if they use more than what's covered in fair use guidelines.

I'm not up-to-date on whether or not the same holds true for television.

PS, is it just me or does this song make for really shitty theme music for a news show? lol

Several other Madhouse/instrumental tracks (and some unreleased ones we've heard) that would have worked better.

yeah I think the song has too much going on in it to render it as suitable background music for voice overs.

Yes, songs are used for radio and t.v all the time with the proper fees being paid. It does not matter if this song was composed for the news program or the content of the program and being a Jw. P does not vote does not mean he has something against msnbc

Madhouse is always cool, the music on 24 is not the best but it's mostly good.

What I like about the Huffpost article is the poll. lol

Prince's "NewsNation" theme song:

It's great!

43.05%

It's awesome.

31.95%

I am a big fan.

They wanted to make sure all the feedback was positive.

Yes yes you have made that repeatedly clear.

My point emanates from the fact that Prince rarely / seldom / almost never licenses his music to anyone. When was the last time his music was licensed for television?

Hell, Questlove has even said that they won't play his music on Fallon because of the difficulties trying to gain a license. So therefore this *is* noteworthy that a Prince song is being used as the theme for a television show (if indeed it is, and not just for that one outro).

When I was running the audio for the local NBC affiliate 20 years ago, I used to make my own bumpers for the news and other local shows and had several that were from the two Madhouse albums.

Since I didn't tell anyone what music I was using for the bumpers I'm pretty sure that no licensing fees were paid and no permission was given.

Oops! Sorry. But, I'm pretty sure the statute of limitations has expired...

That's very nice of Prince but someone should tell him and DrF that it's really none of our business and Prince doesn't owe any of us an explanation of what he chooses to do with his songs.

How he chooses to wear his hair is none of our business too, but fans think Prince owes them an explaination on that too. For those wondering, at least they know.

That's funny! Some years ago, I was half watching/listening to an Ohio news program on TV. When they went to commercial, they were playing Girls and Boys! I did a double take at the TV. I suppose it was another Prince fan doing that programming too.

Great tune...glad more people are hearing it...
