Prince and Woody Allen 1. Both prolific to the point of obsession.Produce new output pretty much every year for 3 decades or more. 2.Short men with something to prove.Napoleon complex. 3..Both absolutists on nature of life. One religious zeolot the other adamant athiest. 4.Both meek in public while tyranical behind the scenes. 5.Both obsessed with sex and death and each one pecular and paranoid to a fault.. 6.Critical darlings to the point of excess. 7.Both labelled as geniuses while more realistically being shrewd idiot savants. 8.Have no equivalent peers. No one else on their level of talent. 9.Dysfunctional private lives.(Althouh Woody is on another level on this one.). 10.Both had golden age of 6 or 7 years while never matching brilliance thereafter.

Yes, but unlike Woody, Prince did not marry his daughter, listening to Prince's music doesn't not tend to make you sad and depressed as most of Woody's films do and Prince has inflexion in his voice when he talks whereas Woody just has that monotone which can put you to sleep. Yeah their sensibility is very different of course as was their environment.Woody has a more existential obsession hence his melancholy films.Prince has a monotone as well that can bore you to tears.

Two of my favorites!
And yes, both odd, mad, troubled, socially-awkward, sexually-obsessed geniuses, who are as brilliant as they are frustrating.

They seem to have different types, but yes, we have to watch both of them around our teenage daughters. Woody was a bit more blatant although I don't recall any films about it. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Excellent observations!
Yeah, such were the geniuses of yesteryear.
Not really buying this Kanye <3 Kim shit of today.

You forget that both also seem to date women much younger than them, or present women as there new "protogee".
Woody Allen has been doing that more recvently with Scarlett Johansson, and Prince with Andy Allo.
Both were known for being really home city proud.
Both joke around a lot in interviews (although Prince's humor is not as well received)
Both play musical instruments professionally. Woody Allen famously skipped out on being at the Academy Awards where he won best picutre because he was playing in a jazz band in New York.
DIFFERENCE: Woody Allen doesn't seem to care for his photo ops at awards, because he never shows up. Prince does show up to make appearances.
Woody Allen was considered a bit dulled down in his career trajectory and then had the biggest movie of his career (popularitywise) just the other year.
Will that same happen to a new Prince album? Bigger than Purple Rain?
If it happened to Woody...
There's a great doc on Woody Allen on netflix that explains his whole start from a teenage humor writer to standup comic to movie maker/actor. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I'm totally enamored of and obssessive about both Prince and Woody Allen. I saw a roundtable discussion once with Chris Rock and he said that he loved them both too. Wish I could find that interview. I love them both! I feel some attraction and I am solidal with talented sociopatics in general. That's because I am one, too (even if less talented of course).

Of all the oddball topics that come and go in this section, this one is quite interesting to say the least. I have never seen any of Woody's films for no other reason than I'm not interested in them but I'll acknowledge that he's established himself in the lexicon of stardom and infamy.

His movies are still excellent, while prince's studio output varies from very good to absolute rubbish nowadays. There's not one single Woody Allen movie that I don't like. That's a very impressive body of work.

Huh.
Woody's movies got patchy as hell ages ago.

Please don't compare Prince and Woody Allen -. It really is attempted leaps of similarity.

It was in the Talking Funny special with Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld and Louis C.K.

I just happened to see Prince at a screening of Shadows & Fog (wearing a gold lame suit & cape) in about 1991. I read he is a big fan of Woody.
I think they are similar in the sense that they're big mainstream artists & stars who operate more like independents. They have very strong styles, and are hugely influential in their fields. They're both unlikely ladies' men. They are both prolific. The both arguably suffer somewhat from producing work before it's really ready. They both gross out the women in my life. They both compete with their pasts. My Legacy

Interesting topic... not sure there are too many real similarities other than the broad stuff (geniuses, independent-minded, sexual themes, etc.).
However, Prince is my favorite musician and Woody is my favorite filmmaker. I also have known more people than chance would seem to dictate who are really into the arts and feel the same way (or at least close to it -- i.e. maybe not their absolute favorite but among their top few favorites for both). From what I've heard him say in the past, I think Chris Rock would probably also rank Woody as his favorite filmmaker and Prince as his favorite musician.
On a sorta-connected point, I noticed a few people bringing up the relationship with Woody and Soon-Yi. The media really screwed Woody on that one, and most people seem to misunderstand the situation to this day. Here's what actually happened (I'll try to be as objective as I can here), so at least people can judge from the facts instead of misinformation and sensationalism (warning -- might be TL:DR, but if you really want to know the truth of the situation, this is as short as I could manage while still getting in the relevant facts):
Woody had a relationship with Mia Farrow (an actress who was in many of his movies) for about a decade, but they never lived together. When Woody and Mia started dating she already had six kids (three adopted kids and three biological kids) with her previous husband, the jazz and classical composer/pianist Andre Previn. One of these kids she had adopted with Andre Previn was Soon-Yi. Later on, Woody and Mia did adopt two other kids together, and also had a biological son, but still never lived together. Woody and Mia broke up around 1989 or 1990, but stayed in each other lives since they had the three kids. About two years after Woody and Mia broke up, Woody and Soon-Yi (who was between 19 and 22... her exact age wasn't known when she was adopted as a child) started a romantic relationship. This was in the early 90s, and Woody and Soon-Yi are still together, married, with two children of their own. Although Soon-Yi was never Woody's daughter or stepdaughter and they never lived in the same house (and everybody involved agrees he wasn't a major part of her life growing up), she was the sibling of Woody's three children with Mia. Shortly after Mia found out about Woody and Soon-Yi's relationship, she accused him of molesting their pre-pubescent adopted daughter Dylan. Three teams of psychiatrists (one hired by Woody, one by Mia, one by the court) researched this claim, talking to Woody, Dylan, and Mia. All three teams agreed that Dylan's story wasn't credible and that she had likely been coached and that Woody showed no pedophilic tendencies at all. This case was dismissed, although the prosecutor continued to insist that he thought Woody was guilty (mentioning this to be fair, but I'm not sure why he felt this way after the psych evaluations).
So that's the true sordid Woody-Soon-Yi story... I can understand that some people find the fact that he's married to the sibling of some of his other kids too weird to get past, but I at least want people to know the facts (that she wasn't his daughter, he never lived with her, they're still together, etc.) before judging. Personally, I'm glad he has a successful marriage and what seems to be a happy family. Despite all the animosity with Mia, Woody was still influenced enough by her humanitarianism that he and Soon-Yi also adopted their two children from underpriviliged situations in Asia, just as Mia has adopted and saved so many kids, including Soon-Yi.

See that thing in bold. That's enough right there to know that Woody and Soon-Yi were and are way out of line. I unfortunately known 3 people who slept with other women's husbands. Sure, nobody was underage, and there was no physical abuse, but that doesn't mean that I think it's a good idea. In fact, it caused great upset in multiple people's lives, especially the kids. I think the same goes for Woody and Soon-Yi. It's selfish, among other problems. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Woody is a perv and a bit of a sad sack to say the least but Prince as much as i am addicted to his world is a straight up crappy human being.I mean they are both addicted to big money but to ban people from using cellphones at your club shows because in the liitle tyrants mind noone should get to see any footage of him for free is greed on a new level.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Uhm, cameras have been banned in concerts by big stars for decades. The only reason why they've started to give some slack to that rule recently is because they can't take away thousands of cell phones from concert goers. It's easier to enforce that rule in a smaller setting.
