Isn't Comparing ANYONE to Prince a bit UNFAIR? I'm actually being sincere here.
I mean, I get that Frank Zappa was a multi-instrumentalist, and Sting or Peter Murphy are supreme lyricists, and that Michael Jackson could dance his ass off when lip syncing, but Prince embodies so much more than those afore mentioned musicians. And, don't even get me started with what Jenna Jameson can do with a penis.
There are plenty of musicians who probably fancy themselves as MJ proteges, like Justin Timberlake, etc. But i seriously doubt that anybody thinks that they are the next Prince. I mean, this guy is just in a class all his own.
I can really think of nobody who embodies all the different attributes that Prince has, and make it all look so seemless and natural. He really just amazes me that way.
So, when I see threads asking of Bowie is better than Prince, I can't help but think "get the fuck out of her with that bullshit" (and I love Bowie).
Your thoughts?

Without gettin to wordy...I agree 100% ...and when in conversations with others that want 2 disagree with me i simply find them some wut "uneducated" about Prince's total ability..as a musical entity..although im not the all knowing of every musician thats come and gone..so i am wlling to listen if someone can find me a more gifted artist ..hasnt happend yet.. atleast in my world

In my opinion, Bowie's relevance to popular music and, in general, popular culture can be compared to Prince's, and he may even win. But there's no need to go further in this comparison: we are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy both still.

The artists that normally get compared to Prince only encompass one facet of Prince's musical persona but never as a complete whole picture. The recent comparisons to Jack White for instance only cover rock music not all of the other styles Prince has covered and done excellently over the years. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Of course it is, because fanatics tend to look only at the strengths but not at the weaknesses of their idol.

I agree to 100% with the OP.
There are better singers, dancers, songwriters, producers, guitarists, piano players and drummers as Prince. But he is doing it all and he does it pretty damn well.
And when it comes to live performances he is THE top-notch act for decades.
And when u consider the complete package, i donĀ“t see a single musician that can be compared to Prince. He is outstanding, simple as.

Michael Jackson could dance his ass off singing live, it was only in the 1990's he started to lip sync on tour.

His famed Billie Jean performance at the Motown awards was lip-synced.
My point is that Prince can do that too, and more. This means, MJ is just one of many musicians that really don't stand a chance when compared to Prince as a whole.

it's just human instinct to compare. When I started my recent thread on Jack White I felt it perfectly valid as you have 2 great, creative front men doing a very similar concept i.e. all girl band...how could you not naturally compare the 2? Likewise what is the harm in starting threads about other artists who release tracks with a huge level of Prince influence...but only do it better!
Prince has set himself up as a Jack of all trades however it is clear that he [IMHO] is becoming a master of none apart from the soul ballads!.
If people have an issue with comparison threads then just don't bother replying..all threads are valid and that's why we love the org!!.

Since this is a Prince site,he would naturally "win" any type of comparison to another artist. : lol: it's kinda pointless to have that type of discussion here

Prince is a jack of all-trades, definately excels at that and some of his abilities - but certainly not all.

I enjoy many different artists for different reasons.I don't see the need to compare. It's not a battle. You can like lots of different artists and bands!

there was a time when prince could do not wrong and it would be unfair .. even tho at that time prince had PLENTY of help achieving such greatness
now a days .. what prince puts out is laughable .. there are kids with home studios making more interesting music .. there are gospel bands in church making better spiritual music .. there are pop artists making better pop songs and there are rock grunge bands that blow prince out of the water
he just does not have "it" anymore and the fact that he is multi instrumental does not automatically put him above others .. prince needs to deliver .. this thread is based on very long in the past achievements and not his current abilities .. which are nothing short of boring and unimpressive

And if they were all just one person then they might be comparable to Prince but you just rattled off a list of people good at one thing and lacking musical versatility. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I think that even if Prince's songs are not as great as before it does not take away his accomplishments from his volume of work. He is incredibly talented, and yes a multi-instrumentalist and his volume of work overall is amazing and has inspired so many people. People can compare all they want, Prince, Sting, Bruce all of them are great.

If you ask me that's the whole point of comparing an artist to another. Who's here to actually sit down and count how many different instruments Prince can play compared to other artists ? Aren't we all, at the end of the day nothing more than a bunch of practical customers who really just want to get enjoyable quality stuff that's worth the money we're paying for, in other words, result-oriented music listeners anyway? And for that reason the fact that Prince has done funk, pop, soul and gospel doesn't give him an "excuse" to not excel at grunge. I really do appreciate him experimenting so many different genres of music over the years but I also don't have a problem admitting that he hasn't exactly always been the best at all the things he's tried.

No, I don't think so. Prince ain't all that in my opinion. One of the greatest ever though.

I wouldn't compare any artist with another artist, and if I do in recent posts, slap me lol
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Me either. How do you compare a Fela Kuti to Prince? Or a Mozart to Prince, Mozart would annihilate a Prince. Lenny Kravitz is just a joke aside from his Mama Said album, which had several factors of co-writing, producing etc. Which for the most part is where excellent music comes from, not just one person doing the whole thing. Also the best song on any Madonna album is Secret Garden the last track on Erotica, because of everyone involved in making it.
