Prince the Hendrix of linn drum

More then a few times i have heard people calling Prince the Jimi Hendrix of Linn Drum, because of his inovative way of using linn.Do you think Prince is maybe the best linn drum programer or not?

Interesting question. It's difficult to answer because you have to go back and remember/figure out which of 1000s of songs used the Linn rather than other drum machines.

Or one can ask who are the best drum programmers. Prince and Timbaland are among the tops for me.

And as much as I love some of their songs, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis would be near the bottom of my list of drum programmers among the successful producers/performers.

Love Prince's work with the Linn, but I defy you to point me to a single instance of him being labelled the "Jimi Hendrix of the Linn Drum".

I can find a few isolated examples of that by using google (all from this site except for one though lol ). It's a pretty silly way to describe his drum programming skills in any case - especially considering he that he happens to be also one of those guitarists that can do Hendrix type of solos on the guitar pretty much like Jimi used to play them.

How about "Tony Williams of Linn Drum" instead? wink

Again, a rather ridiculous comparison...

I think the comparison is justified because Prince, just like Hendrix on the guitar, used a lot of unique tricks and effects, guitar pedals and whatnot, to create his trademark Linn sound.

Here´s another interesting link with some info on how Prince used the Linn.

By the way, the link contains another Hendrix comparison. lol

Right. Since when does a linn drum garner as much respect as a guitar anyway? Kind of an empty accolade if people were throwing that around.

But yeah, P was better than most at programming a machine.
