C.J.: Immature Prince treats borrowed guitar like his own before tossing it

Article by: C.J. , Star Tribune

Updated: March 4, 2013 - 10:16 PM

Reports of the maturation of Prince are grossly premature after he hurled a guitar he didn’t own to the floor before marching off “The Jimmy Fallon Show” stage Friday.

How will this rock ’n’ roll child ever learn what is acceptable behavior if nobody tells him?

Well, the man who owned the guitar is trying. Roots guitarist Kirk Douglas, known on Twitter as @CaptainKDouglas, tweeted: “Maybe it’s because I’m a dad, but I think framing the guitar is a little like rewarding bad behavior.”

Capt. Kirk gets it!

Among those who didn’t are most of those quoted at the website Muck Rack. Under the headline “What journalists are sayi...ut #prince,” there was ample Twitter recitation of the basic info.

“#Prince borrows guitar, uses during @LateNightJimmy show, refuses to autograph, THEN slams it to floor in the end! #rockgodstatus,” wrote @blackthought.

On Muck Rack I found only a single tweet that might be considered even mildly critical of Symbolina’s outlandishly rude behavior: “I feel bad for Capt. Kirk’s guitar,” tweeted Dan DeLuca, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s pop music critic.

Of course, Capt. Kirk must not know much about Prince to have thought that Symbolina would ever autograph the instrument. Only place I’ve ever seen Symbolina’s autograph was on a court document.

While thinking Prince would autograph the instrument was silly, if it’s true, Capt. Kirk was naive not to know that when you give an instrument to a child — of the regular or petulant rock ’n’ roll variety — you cannot reasonably expect your property to be treated respectfully.

And can’t you just imagine that shortly after tossing the electric guitar (which landed close enough to something else electrical to cause feedback that had Jimmy Fallon looking for the off button), Symbolina was probably arrogantly averring: Broken or not, I just enhanced the value of that guitar.

Sadly, he’s probably right. While Prince fans believe he can do no wrong, this was egregious given the ownership of the guitar.

Someone as upstanding as Prince — who always makes sure his property taxes are paid promptly and would never paint a house he was renting purple — is probably just trying to decide when is the best time to deliver a check or another guitar to Capt. Kirk. (Insert hysterical laughter here.)

Lyrics a problem?

“Screwdriver” sounds like it should be added to that Prince.org list of songs that Prince doesn’t perform anymore because they are too racy.

“I’m your driver and you’re my screw,” the key lyrics go.

You don’t have to be Freud or Masters and Johnson to get the gist of those lyrics, and they probably shouldn’t pass the lips of someone whose religion caused him to drop certain staple songs from his act. Interesting that “Screwdriver,” the first song Prince sang Friday to an overjoyed Jimmy Fallon and his audience, is the ditty with the lyric “We smash guitars and shatter glass.”

And the “Bambi” song has homophobic overtones:

“You had another lover and she looked just like you/Bambi, can’t you understand?/Bambi, it’s better with a man"

Those “Screwdriver” lyrics could make you glad that Prince knows a girl with a pocket full of horses, some of which are Trojans.

Billy Jack Bitch!

Anybody got a photo of this CJ wench??? lol

Wow. Is this her day job?!? rolleyes
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Funny that she calls Prince immature when she's made a career of calling him silly names. Also, she paints like a child.

Nope. You're wrong, son. Kirk's guitar is a 1961 Crestwood. There's one on eBay right now for $8,000. American-made and very nice. It was not a new-ish Epiphone and is worth more than MOST new Fenders and Gibsons, custom shop, special or whatever. It's abundantly clear from your attitude that you really don't know much of anything about guitars, son.

[Edited 3/4/13 13:32pm]

You may be right with what you've posted... but let's not give the false impression that the ebay prices for vintage instruments are usually anywhere near their real value (the "buy-it-now" prices are often just plain silly).

I'm 100% right and so are you in your assertion that eBay prices are ridiculous.

yeahthat Now, we all know that because Kirk "bitched" about his guitar getting shredded, Prince's camp is going to send him another one. Kirk should have taken the high road and been like, "Hey, Prince may have destroyed my geetar, but I now have a "Prince" collectible to tell my kiddies about!" That would have endeared him to Prince. nod

Okay, but not everybody feels a desire to "endear" themselves to Prince.

I don't know the details behind this guitar-smashing incident, nor do I know what meaning this particular guitar might have to Kirk...for all I know, this guitar might have sentimental value and Prince treating it the way he did (even breaking it by accident) was hurtful. Throwing money at a situation doesn't always "fix" what happened.

Prince would have had a shitfit had somebody accidentally broken one of his treasured guitars. He files lawsuits at the drop of a hat. I'm amused by those who don't have all the pertinent details of this situation (as in, how special this guitar might be to him or what type of arrangement he and Prince made about Prince using his guitar) yet sneeringly say Kirk should somehow be honored that Prince broke his guitar.

This might have all been an unfortunate accident, and I hope Kirk and Prince get everything ironed out...but I'm with those that say that if Prince wanted to toss around a guitar, he should've just used his own.

Listen, I do understand about Prince destroying Kirk's guitar, but Kirk should have let it go. Questlove has put this tribute together for Prince and this will really make Prince look back. Kirk has to remember why Prince even came to Jimmy's show, it is because of the tribute. I'm sorry, Kirk still played the "bitch" by taking to twitter. It appears that Prince gets nervous when he goes on these shows, so after he does his set, he wants to book as quickly as possible without the chit chat.

Really.

He throws it towards the audience and high in the air just like he always does when he throws it to his guitar tech or a fan. It's quite likely that he didn't intend to break it and just underestimated the length of the cord. Watch it online and you should come to the same conclusion.

Prince Should Pay For Breaking Borrowed Guitar, Says Vernon Reid

Vernon Reid, Living Colour founder and guitarist, believes Prince needs to pay for breaking a guitar on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” last Friday.

After performing his song “Bambi,” the rock and soul legend tossed the rare 1961 Epiphone Crestwood guitar about 10 feet into the air, breaking it.

There’s one major problem. The guitar was reportedly a loaner from Captain Kirk Douglas from The Roots, Fallon’s house band.

Douglas' damaged guitar (Twitter)“Prince needs to write a CHECK,” Reid commented on Twitter Wednesday. “Smash SOMEONE ELSE’S 60’S ERA GUITAR & WALK AWAY?! NOPE.”

Reid says there is no excuse for Prince’s behavior. “Talent, even a SUPREME LEVEL like PRINCE’S doesn’t give him THE RIGHT TO DO THAT.Next time he sings The Cross, he should think about THAT.”

Reid stresses his support of Douglas. “The more I think of it, the madder I get. Capt. Kirk is 1 of the nicest people I know, & a real fan of his- VERY disappointed in TACKAP.”

Douglas upheld the nice guy demeanor Reid described when discussing the matter on Twitter.

When Douglas posted a photo of the guitar on his Twitter page Saturday, he used the title of Prince’s heart wrenching song “Purple Rain” as the caption.

Captain Kirk Douglas (Mike Coppola, Getty Images)Douglas conveys his disappointment in a subsequent post. “Maybe it’s because I’m a dad but I think framing the guitar is a little like rewarding bad behavior,” he wrote.

Douglas brought the guitar to work because of Prince. “The crazy thing is the only reason the guitar was in 30 rock was because I was rehearsing for a Prince tribute at Carnegie Hall this week,” he wrote.

The Roots are one of 20 bands playing Prince at Carnegie Hall Thursday night to benefit music programs for under-privileged youth in New York.

According to Reid, Prince “Went out of his way to ASK TO BORROW IT. Fallon is shot at 30 Rock. 48th st is CLOSE-could’ve gotten a FREE guitar in 10m.”

Vernon Reid (Patrick R. Murphy, Getty Images)A 1961 Epiphone Crestwood can be purchased for $4,500 to $7,000 says Leroy Braxton, manager of the vintage guitar room at the Guitar Center in Hollywood.

“It was kinda a student model guitar,” Braxton tells Yahoo! Music. “It was marketed as such and kinda developed as such. They had two versions of it. They had a Crestwood, sometimes it was referred to as a custom, and there was deluxe, I think it was introduced little later, I think ‘63. This was a guitar that essentially stopped being in production in the late ‘60s early ‘70s.”

Braxton said he recently sold a Crestwood. “It’s one that we do see from time to time at the Guitar Center,” he says.

This is getting out of hand & SOMEONE needs to give a statement that prince apologized & is fitting the bill to get it fixed....This bad press should not be happening AT ALL!!!

Although I appreciate your stance on this issue, clearly you're a Prince apologist and, in your eyes, Prince will ALWAYS be the "good guy" and anyone who doesn't kowtow to Prince, completely kiss his ass, or who dares to speak out about crappy behavior on Prince's part will be the "bad guy" no matter what the actual circumstances.

We'll just have to agree to have differing opinions on this situation.

Fantastic. Gotta love people mouthing off to thousands of followers about something for days (his last comment was 4hrs ago) after seeing a couple of tweets, evidently without any further investigation.

I'm sure next time TACKAP (sic) sings "The Cross", he'll be thinking about the time he smashed Kirk's guitar and didn't send a check.

Oh...wait.

He apologised immediately afterwards, he's already paid for the repair, he hasn't sung "The Cross" nor has he been called TAFKAP this century and he's certainly never been bloody TACKAP.

Well done, Vernon.

Quest even posted a photo of the guitar at the tribute today, looking (and hopefully sounding) perfect again.

Kirk has already mentioned twice that it was rectified and the press have reported on that too - some mention that the apology came immediately after the show, while others just mention that his people contacted Kirk regarding the repairs after the fact, which is sly journalism in that it makes it sound like his people are just cleaning up his mess for him - but it doesn't matter, of course, what's done is done.

I've had to put up with at least one of my friends saying dreadful things about him on Facebook - again, someone who just read an article and was suddenly an expert - and really, you just have to let it go.

I'm sure Prince learnt to do that a long time ago.

It doesn't make it alright, but then again, apologising and paying to repair a guitar doesn't make it alright that you smashed it in the first place either, so I guess there might be a bit of karma to deal with there.

My karmic lesson for having to put up with it in my newsfeed? Minding my own darn business next time wink

Prince might be trying to lay low until the West Coast shows start in mid April. I understand where Vernon Reid is coming from. Breaking someone's borrowed instrument is a cardinal sin in music, but since Prince has already paid for the damages to the guitar and has since made amends with Kirk, maybe other people can fall back and move on.
