If The Hits didnt exist what albums would You Place "Peach" and "Pope" on ?

I was thinking about this yesterday and it was a hypothetical question i never thought about before. Like the subject says "If The Hits didnt exist what albums would You Place "Peach" and "Pope" on ?" "Peach" was originally slated for the "Papa" EP with "Papa", Come" and "Race". But that never happened. To me, I really don't see "Peach" fitting on "Come" or the "Gold Experience" but i do think it would of fit perfectly on the "Symbol" album replacing the "Flow" and giving the album a little more punch. Afterall it was recorded June of 92. It also could of fit on "Chaos and Disorder" but it's kind of a stretch. As for "Pope" when it was played live during Act 2 and the aftershows it was played around songs that either made the "Come" album(Dark) or at least were slated to be on that album(Endorphinemachine). It could possibly work on "Come" but i'm not totally sold on that either. I do think it would of been a good B-side for the "Come' or "Gold Experience" albums. Would love to here your thoughts or ideas.

Peace

If i never heard peach it place it on parade. Although it belongs on black album if u ask me or batman if batman wasn't a concept album and i use that term loosely. Pope would fit on come if u asked me. Like around race. great question btw.

Interesting answer and glad you like the question. Later today i'm going to try and put "Pope" on the "Come" album and try to see the best place it would fit and would see if it would work. I was kinda thinking of putting it after "Solo" or even replacing it with "Solo"(and I like "Solo") because I was felt "Come" is a pretty front loaded album and it kinda loses pacing towards the end. As for "Peach" I was really trying to work from the recording date of July 92, and seeing what album it would work on "Symbol","Come" or the "Gold Experience". Your choices for "Peach" are interesting but I really cant see it working on those albums at all. Thats the beauty of hearing other peoples thoughts. Nobody's right or wrong, it's just a hyptothetical question. If you get a chance replace it with the "Flow and Arrogance" and I think it fits really well on that album.

As for putting "Pope" on the "Gold Experience" thats a hard one because there are so many other stronger songs that didn't make that album that really trump "Pope". Actually i think it might've fit the best on Mayte's "Children of the Sun" album. I really think that the original configuration for the "Gold Experience" was the best. I would replace "We March" with "Love Sign", dropping "Shy" for "Acknowledge Me" and finding a spot for "Ripopgodazippa".

Good call about putting Pope on Mayte's album, as you say it wouldn't make the cut for the Gold Experience and I dont think it would sit right on Come. I agree about dropping We March for Love Sign but I'd keep Shy - I've always liked it.

There are so many great songs from back then without an album (I know some ended up on Crystal Ball) with the likes of Ripopgodazippa, Acknowledge Me, Hide the Bone, Mad, Funky Design, Days of Wild, The Ride...just off the top of my head. He could have made a really strong double or triple album but we all know the problems he was having with WB so its all hypothetical...

Peach would probably fit best on the Symbol album I think

I suppose we could also ask what album would we put Pink Cashmere on? I know it was apparently wrote a few years earlier but I think it fits in that 92-95 period

None, both songs are so bad they are "sub album", maybe onto a proteges album or something like the Vault, old friends for sale.

Pink Cashmere I would put on Diamonds and Pearls, just fits the feel of that album.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

That one's tougher and I didn't want to lump it in with "Pope" and "Peach" because the recording dates for those are 7 months in between. "Pink Cashmere" is just such a great track. For me it's home on the original "88 Rave". That version ends with the water/synth coda thats at the end of "Positivity" and "NPG part 2". Maybe "Graffiti Bridge", and possibly it could work on "Diamonds & Pearls" by removing and "Push", "Jughead" but also adding "Horny Pony". I can also see it on "Lovesexy" by removing "When 2R in Love"(which I really like on Lovesexy) and keeping that track exclusive to the "Black Album".

Thanks for the Pink Cashmere ?

Maybe Peach would sound more fitting to Come in it's earlier incarnations with Endorphinmachine and Interactive? Pope I could see on Come though, although I'm glad it's not *pulls icky face*

lol I agree, with the 1st part

the 2nd, since it was made in the Black album/Lovesexy-Batman period and sounds like it, or at least feels like When 2 R N Love. If he didn't use W2RNLove Pink Cashmere could have fit on the Lovesexy album, and definately the (aborted) Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic followup

the drumming, the guitar solo, the syth/strings all Lovesexy New Power

That song is so much a part of that period, I couldn't see it anything in the 1990's

Take Pope and Jughead and put them on "Awful Outtakes." Take Peach and put it on Gold or Come as one of the lesser tracks.

16 NPG Operator
17 Dolphin
18 NPG Operator
19 Gold

SIDE2
1 The Dawn

3 NPG Operator
4 Come (Beautiful experience version)
5 Lovesign
6 NPG Operator
7 Race
8 Pope
9 NPG Operator
10 Space
11 Pheromone (no intro)

Both on Come.

Would fit the "single word title" thing for the album as well.

Seriously, what the hell was that about.

There was a rumor in mid 1993 that the first letter of the song titles were supposed to spelled out a word. But that never totally made sense to me due to the fact that if you tried to make a word out of all the song titles you couldn't really form one.

Both of these songs are throwaways. They're not terrible, but it's hard to imagine Prince placing them on a studio album. These are B-side songs.

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on this thread. It seems the answeres are pretty varied and thats a healthy thing. It seems the number one answer is to place them on "Come". Ultimately, I think those songs were on the "Hits" because they really didn't fit properly on what he was planning for the "Come" album. And I think thats why he selected them for the "Hits", "Gold" waspretty much was barely in it's infancy if that when "Pope" and "Peach" were submitted for the "Hits". I still think "Peach" would of fit the best on the "Symbol" album and "Pope" on Mayte's "Child of the Sun" album. I'm not a huge fan of "Peach". I find the song somewhat average but it's still better than the "Flow". I actually prefer the D&P version of the "Flow" much more than the symbol version. I've tried to putting "Peach" and the "Pope" on "Come" with also putting "Endorphinemachine" and "Come #1". Well, "Pope" does kinda fit towards the back end of the album but "Peach" feels somewhat disjointed on that album and probably more so on "Gold". It has way different production sound.

I totally agree with that(thats why i think thats why they were on the "Hits"), but I wouldn't mind "Peach" on the "Symbol" album.

I don't think Prince ever considered "Peach" a "throwaway". It's appeared regularly in his live sets for nearly two decades and it really was the single that was intended to boost the sales of The Hits compilations.

I retract my statement somewhat. I guess what I meant by agreeing that its a throwaway, I really meant that it was a song that really didn't fit on the 93-94 he was working on. So I misspoke. I really enjoy the live version of "Peach" from 2002 onward alot more than the live version from the Act 1 tour. It has more of a looser jam feel and breathes better.

The project Glam Slam Ulysses was the basis for the Come album, with Strays of the World, Dolphin, Interactive, What's My Name, Endorphinemachine, and Pope ultimately left off. These were all recorded in early 1993 with mainly Prince, Michael, and Sonny. Peach was premiered in Jan 93 at the Glam Slam Mpls preview show for the Act I tour, so all of these songs were done around the same time. All of these songs should have been on the Come album, in my opinion.
