i'm not really an expert, but here's how i see the whole 'appolonia6 got the shaft' issue: ether you have the talent to make it on your own in the music business, with maybe a little help from prince, who shines a spotlight on you, or you don't.
it's not up to prince to 'guarantee' any of his musical colleagues a star in the skies of music legend. that is something an individual artist is either born to achieve, or not.
generally, when someone can really write music and perform it, the opportunity to be in a spotlight even once will make that happen. if not, no amount of showcasing will do the job.

actually I think someone else already said it. If Vanity 6 was in Purple Rain, a lot of those songs probably would have remained on the album. Vanity 6 had charisma and purple electricity
No matter what anyone thinks of her, Vanity continued her career when she left the purple camp, made a movie or 2 etc
Just listening to Prince & Vanity's energy on Sex Shooter, you know he was inspired by them as a group. Watching the Vanity 6 videos and concerts, you see they had the passion and fun and characters.
Apollonia as someone else said, was not in it for the music or music career, but for the acting role, only. That's why it got the shaft.

So I was never enampoured with any of their talents, they did a few backing vocals, if Brenda and Susie were so good why did Prince not cut an album on them.
Ass shaker, a sexy attractive female, often signed by Prince because of her looks and abilities to shake her ass and look fine rather than have any actual musical talent. Carmen Electra is a prime example of an ass shaker. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Not at all. They were given a huge platform (called Purple Rain) to get their shine and that was more than enough. I like the album, but it cant touch Vanity 6. Apollonia was just playing the part, and it showed. If things worked out how they were originally intended, Sheila E. wouldve been a little less "glamorous". Now speaking of getting the "shaft", Jill Jones, smh... [Edited 3/4/13 3:15am]

I agree about Jill Jones.Prince should have given her "Sugar Walls" for her debut single and released her album in 1984,so she could have benefitted from the Purple Rain hype.

he didn't cut an album with Jesse Johnson either, even though Jesse wanted to continue with Prince
Brenda Bennett also plays guitar, look her up on youtube. and a recent interview
http://www.examiner.com/a...her-new-cd
Brenda Bennett (born Brenda Elizabeth Claire Siobhan in 1961) is a British-American singer from Scotland who married the musician Prince's set-designer Roy Bennett, and then became Prince's "wardrobe mistress." She started off in a CBS Records band called Ken Lyon and Tombstone which toured with Mott the Hopple and Queen . Years later, through Roy Bennett, Prince gave her a "tough-girl, cigarette-smoking" persona and enlisted her in a girlgroup, Vanity 6, that he was attempting to create in 1982.
That group broke up a year later due to the departure of its lead singer, Vanity, after only minor success. But Bennett stuck around for its reincarnation, with a new lead singer, as Apollonia 6 in 1984. Bennett's image in both of the groups was that of the bad girl—she smoked and had the most attitude.
Bennett also had a part in the film Purple Rain alongside Apollonia 6 members Susan Moonsie and the group's lead singer, Apollonia.
Brenda Bennett can be heard on lead vocals on "Some Kind Of Lover," "A Million Miles (I Love You)," and "Blue Limousine" on the album Apollonia 6. She can also be heard on background vocals of the song "17 Days" that Prince withdrew from their album. The song became a B-Side of his single "When Doves Cry" as well as several other Prince tracks recorded while he was on under the Warner Bros. label.
I read that there was a lot of stuff that happened back then, a falling out. Brenda has been doing music still though.
can't touch Vanity 6, Sheila Susannah, Jill, Cat-Not ass shakers

I totally agree and a Parade album,

Probably. In many aspects of the word. I don't know, I wasn't around when they were famous, but enjoy their few tracks intensely. For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Cat's not an ass shaker? She's like the prime one. Was she ever anything else?
| |

I seem to recall we needed her to rap.... didn't we?

Cat was a dancer (that's not ass shaker) and definately not to put her in the same line as Carmen Electra. Cat sang and danced, she also choreographed videos and shows from Koo Koo to the Lovesexy show
Watch her expression during SOTT that's not an 'ass shaker' If she was an ass shaker then so were Jerome Wally & Gregory
Just because a woman looks good and is a dancer doesn't make them an 'ass shaker' Cat wasn't some video vixen. And some say Cat wasn't the prettiest woman, but she was in shape and had moves that helped interpret songs
the term to me is very sexist and Adorecream also refered to Jill Jones & Susannah Melvoin as ass shakers. So that term I will not overall agree with
It was actually Alan Leeds that found her, not Prince.
And she originally was hired to choreograph for the Prince camp. Cat was not originally going to work directly with Prince

no, sorry. she's an ass-shaker. everything she did, Carmen did too (dancer, choreography, etc.).
except Carmen got an album out of it. and eventually something approximating a career at whatever it is she does.
Jerome & Wally were even more useless than an ass-shaker. actually, not Jerome. but Wally and Greg? even more pointless than the Game Boyz since they could barely even dance.

Carmen was a sex thing for Prince(whom he must have cared enough 4 to Hate), Cat wasn't
U can have ur opinion, but just because she didn't play an instrument doesn't make her an ass shaker
I guess Misty Copeland was too

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Misty Copeland was just a girlfriend who guested on stage a couple of times.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Misty wasn't his girlfriend

NDRU said: If I was prince, I certainly would have given two of them the shaft Yeah, he kinda did lol. And this "ass shaker" argument is ridiculous lol. Carmen is a classically trained dancer who has, on occassion, shaken her ass, quite proficiently i might add. So i dont see how that can be used as an insult.
