While I do love the frilly mask look, the look with the mic gun he starts looking like the 'meth Prince' I associate the 90's with. Sickly and out of it.

Mayte's letter 2 Controversy magazine - part I (1st June 1993) © 1993 Controversy magazine
Dear Eileen,
Prince asked me 2 write a short note 2 U explaining the new show we plan 2 do 4 the upcoming european tour. Upon reading what I had originally written, I realized that without a full explanation of what's been going on around here -- reading a song list wouldn't be much help 2 anyone. I asked Prince if I could write a longer letter and he said "cool, as long as U tell the truth." and so I begin...
Ever since Prince and I walked thru the doors at the end of the "7" video -- he has changed. Maybe it was the wonderful effect the children had on all of us, maybe it was the fact that he killed off several images of himself during the video (an act he has yet 2 explain 2 anyone). Maybe it was the trip he made 2 Puerto Rico, all I know is that he's changed.
I should tell U that I don't talk 2 Prince much, but he talks 2 me, and I listen. He tells me things I know he tells no other. He says in everyday situations he feels 4bidden 2 talk but compelled 2 sing. I don't ask what that means, I just listen. And the more I listen, the more he talks. I think deep down he wants 2 talk 2 someone -- anyone. And so I listen.
...
Love,
P.S. The truth is that I had help writing this letter. I can't say from whom -- but his name isn't Prince.

I believe there are 7 (Prince's) in those tubes, dressed in different outfits Prince wore during the previous D&P (looks like) 7 Prince kills them, ZsaZsaJackson post a list of the 7 deadly sins, maybe the 7 different Prince's represented each of those sins
Also he opens the video with a 'mob scene' that's seen throught the video Gotta find out what Mayte says to him at the opening

It's here. ZsaZsaJackson said: Imagine Imagine a mirror with a little girl crying inside The sole heir to a 10 billion dollar estate That her father left behind Imagine 7 men stood guard of her and watched her every move As her heart grows colder and colder Until she meets you I know the 7 men killed my father And soon they'll come for me And the chains They must never find them They must never find us If anything should happen to you I...

hmm interesting. And I agree that some of those Prince personas definitely needed being put in a test tube and killed. ESPECIALLY microphone gun Prince. I would loved lollipop sucking Pimp Prince being killed too.

the song that finally got me to admit that I was a fan and made me realized I wanted to take it hardcore.

of course the technology from the late 1970s into the 80's wasn't as good as in the 1990's but it's weird how some of his best music had weak videos (outside of ATWIAD & Parade, When Doves Cry, Glam Slam/I Wish U Heaven) but all the other videos for such great songs had no real effort of production put into them.
Then the degree of production for his 1990's 2000's music, the video looked like they were high quality but either Prince doesn't release or the songs aren't always as good

Chapter 13 Games
Possessed the Rise & Fall of Prince
p 186-187
The promotional campaign for got off to a poor start over a dispute regarding the choice of a lead singel. While Prince favored "My Name Is Prince" (an abrasive, rather hookless number that seemed to offer little chart potential), Warners' pop music department argued for 7, a melodic, acoustic-guitar driven song with soaring harmonies and Middle Eastern inflections.
7 just blew me way," recalled vice president Jee Gold. But Prince, believing this dialogue was a sequel to his arguments with Warners over "When Doves Cry" and "Kiss," insisted on having his way. Why he believed so strongly in "My Name Is Prince" is unclear, but he may have felt that the song's hip-hoppery would appeal to the same audience that had eagerly purchased Diamonds & Pearls. This time, however, he was wrong. "My Name Is Prince," released on September 29, reached only No. 36 on the Pop Singles Chart adn No. 25 on the R&B Singles Chart.
...
The only notable accomplishment to emerge from the murk is 7, an assured piece of songwriting with many fascinating production touches, including acoustic guitar, a jaunty drum-machine pattern, and sitar-like overdubs. (Notably, the song is a Prince solo recording.)

That was such an exciting time to be a Prince fan. He had just, the year before, reclaimed his spot at the top of the charts with D&P, and I was happy to see him enjoying some success; however, I really did not care for D&P. I felt it was just far too 'normal' for a Prince release. The hip hop elements, I didn't like, but I also put up with them because Prince at that time always threw you a curve ball. But, with the release of the Symbol album, Prince turned up the funk and other elements. This is a messy, messy, MESSY album--just as a Prince album should be. And 7 fell smack dab between some very different tracks. You go from 'The Flow' where I actually like Tony M.'s rap to the criminally underatted "God Created Woman."
7 is one of those classic Prince songs--a song that sounded like NOTHING on radio at the time. It stood out completely, and should have been the lead single for .
Today, I can't really listen to it unless i'm in 'the mood' , but I still appreciate the song, and consider the album among his best.
I also converted a few friends to Prince fans based on that song.

of all the Prince songs to do for karaoke.... it was always THIS ONE I heard people doing at the Nawiliwili Tavern on Kauai when I went there a lot in the mid-'00s.
and I still usually hear it on the radio at least once when I'm on the island.

I always thought it was aimed at the seven WB directors who had made him their slave, killing them off one by one like William Wallace in Braveheart You know you are in love, when you cannot fall asleep because your reality is finally better than your dreams - Dr Seuss

Phenomenal song. The lyrics are mostly sourced from Revelations.
Great music, and the funky bass during the final verse is just sublime.
