I do the same thing. First I download and listen to new stuff of "new" artists and when I like it, I buy a physical copy. I listen a lot to music in my car. I don't mind listen to Mp3 then, because there is so much noise around, it doesn't matter that the soundquality is less. At home I listen to CD's, so I do want a physical copy of the new Prince gems. But for now I am happy with the Mp3's

Really? C-NOTE appeared on CD? Slaughterhouse? Chocloate Invasion? Xpectation?

But what about the recent wav releases, CD equivalent in quality. Are you happy with those are do you still want the physical? RIP

That's because you're getting old, gotta embrace the new
RIP | |

I have spent more dollars on worse sounding (bootleg) material so I cant bother about quality anymore

I would still like a physical copy with a nice booklet and lyrics. I am kinda old fashioned The funny thing is, that i haven't played the new tracks at home on my stereo yet. I only listen to them in my car and on my computer. I am sure that if i have a CD i would listen to it on my stereo. How beautiful do the words have to B, before they conquer every heart

Errant. Please stop insulting me. I'm a musician and an audio engineer.
You keep on confusing audio compression with digital data compression.
Yes, I do agree that most stuff sounds terrible these days. "He's a musician's musician..."

Last time... No, I don't. I listen through a proper stereo system. "He's a musician's musician..."

I think your standards are out of whack. For instance:
*I will only drive Ferraris, Lamborghinis or Bentleys, or certain classic muscle cars *I will ony buy custom-tailored clothes, and my suits must come straight from Saville Row *I will only fly on a G-III or higher *I will only travel to/live in places where the temperature varies between 68.13 degrees and 77.04 degrees *Unless I go skiing, in which case I will only ski under conditions of a minimum 48-inch base and 12 inches minimum of powder *Or unless I go to the beach, in which case I cannot divulge my standards on a PG-13 website *I will only read first-edition books that have been signed by the author. This includes my Bible *I don't always drink beer but when I do, I only drink Dos Equus

I get where Giovanni's coming from. While excited over the new releases, I hope I won't have to miss the anticipation of a new Prince CD/vinyl coming to me through the mail. While I embrace his digital venture right now, I still hope these songs and a few more will be available on a real CD. I'm not an audiophile(spelling?), so my preference toward a physical medium leans more toward the idea of actual ownership of a product, as well as its artwork.
I'll still stick around and buy what he/Prince uploades to his site, hoping that CD/vinyl will eventually get produced and sold, but I miss the days of all my excitement of getting his stuff in a store or waiting for it to come by mail ordering online.
Giovanni, I enjoy reading your posts. I already read you won't be disappearing from the Org, but I hope you still frequent this "home away from home" for us Prince fans.

Thanks, Purpleaxxe1972. The part above that I bolded explains why even WAV files aren't enough for me.
Although I don't like what itunes has done to audio (and the album format), I don't judge others for subscribing to it.

You know nothing of my standards, and they are quite simple.
I eat unrefined, mostly organic high quality food. ~Am I "out of whack" because I don't eat McDonald's food?
I have diverse taste in music, and also prefer high quality performance and recording. ~Am I "out of whack" because I've spent my entire life in music and audio, and have high standards in my field?
I will play any guitar, bass, or synth/keyboard that feels and sounds good to me. ~Am I "out of whack" because I own and play other guitars besides Fender, Gibson, and Paul Reed Smith?

My hope is that since the site asks for an address, that once a certain amount of songs are purchased by an individual, a CD shows up in the mail. It's probably a pipe dream but one can hope.

Too true, Gray, but it's all good ultimately... "He's a musician's musician..."

Didn't people say the same thing when the cd took over the vinyl record? That they only would buy the vinyl? Now people only want the cd instead of a digital track....

There is a big diffrence between having a commodity in your hand and something digital which is basically nothing.

Most of the time yes, although I know for a fact that both Rainbow Children and Superconductor were recorded to 2" tape before mix and mastering.
But this has nothing to do with the difference between audio compression and file compression.
The reason for the trend of excessive audio compression is as dire as the result... it's so the music can be comfortably heard on earbuds and lesser/smaller computer speakers.
Now it is such that even the music itself (most current rap, pop, & R&B) has no dynamics (even before compression).
It's funny, because the first two things you learn in audio production are to be subtle with both EQ and compression.

No, you're out of whack because your sense of humor is totally undeveloped.

LOL, I knew YOU would get it! Please explain it to Giovanni!

Sorry, but wrong again... humour is key, and I've got plenty.
What baffles me, is that I haven't felt this animosity/prejudgment thing from you before... "He's a musician's musician..."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Wow. Divide and conquer mentality in full effect.
Gray and I are on the same page, and I "got it" too... it was just completely irrelevant, even in a humourous context. "He's a musician's musician..."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The only animosity is that you aren't getting my jokes! Now, come on - I know I'm funny! The line about only reading signed first-edition books - including the Bible? That's gold, man! Gold!
And, it does seem like you're being a bit of an attention whore on this.
But mainly I'm just bummed that you are missing out on some GREAT Prince music. I want you to hear it!
And I knew Gray would get the joke, especially the line about only riding on a G-III or higher.

I'm a fan fan of Prince's music, not a fan of a particular retail format. You'd think "lettin' it go" would be about giving up a slavish devotion to a particular retail distribution method, rather than giving up on some songs you might enjoy from your favorite artist. But I guess that's just me.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
For collectors.
The commodity is the music for the fans. Scientifically, a Wav file on a cd is no different than a Wav file on a hard drive. Sales of digital music has started to surpass cd sales. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Giovanni777 said: I'm glad I haven't bought anything from these new websites. It seems there are far more posts about download issues than discussion of the music, which has been scarce and shabby... The version of "Screwdriver" that also had a lyric video was great. Loved it...
By now, you all know that I don't buy mp3s. I won't subscribe to this disposable itunes culture, and digital data compression is far worse than audio compression (even though the two get confused as being the same here).
What about WAV or FLAC?
Nope. I prefer physical product: CD, Vinyl, DVD, Blu-Ray. I know plenty of artists and bands who are releasing music in physical form... young, independant artists are actually going back to vinyl and CD.
Cost?
Don't care. I'd rather pay $9 to $21 for a CD, etc. I wouldn't buy an mp3 for
Also, I won't give up my personal information on a questionable website.
Kinda kills the buzz, doesn't it?
Anywho... you all can flip over these crumbs from P's breadbox. I'll wait for the feast.
After all of these years, I'm letting go... of having to have everything Prince releases. I've drawn the line. Digital(ly released) music goes away in the daytime... (and can't breathe at night)
Just sayin' my Peace... get it?
~G .

All true. Some don't seem to understand that this isn't an issue with Prince, this is an issue with the recording industry and their current "standards". It's shameful. What I don't get is that people go crazy for higher quality video with HD TVs and Bluray but accept increasingly bad quality for audio with earbuds and compressed audio.
