After All These Years... Lettin' It Go.

I'm glad I haven't bought anything from these new websites. It seems there are far more posts about download issues than discussion of the music, which has been scarce and shabby... The version of "Screwdriver" that also had a lyric video was great. Loved it...

By now, you all know that I don't buy mp3s. I won't subscribe to this disposable itunes culture, and digital data compression is far worse than audio compression (even though the two get confused as being the same here).

What about WAV or FLAC?

Nope. I prefer physical product: CD, Vinyl, DVD, Blu-Ray. I know plenty of artists and bands who are releasing music in physical form... young, independant artists are actually going back to vinyl and CD.

Cost?

Don't care. I'd rather pay $9 to $21 for a CD, etc. I wouldn't buy an mp3 for twocents

Also, I won't give up my personal information on a questionable website.

Kinda kills the buzz, doesn't it?

Anywho... you all can flip over these crumbs from P's breadbox. I'll wait for the feast.

After all of these years, I'm letting go... of having to have everything Prince releases. I've drawn the line. Digital(ly released) music goes away in the daytime... (and can't breathe at night)

Just sayin' my Peace... get it?

Name them.

And once again, as me and others have pointed out: Who says you have to give up your personal information to 3EG? Why not just use "Joey Coco" or whatever and a fake address that leads to that polluted lake near the school?

This post reminds me of that great George Harrison song. "Wah Wah"

Hey, Giovanni, I get what you are saying. I've downloaded a ton of music from artists that I just plain like. But if it's an artist that I love, I do prefer a "hard copy." Something tangible that I can tourch and look at, collect. It's like with books. I put a lot of books on my Kindle, but if its a story line that I'm really into, and want to have forever, store on my book shelf, look at, etc., I buy an actual book.

Digital music (and books) is convenient, fast, easy. Sometimes you just want the real thing.

Whew! I thought you were saying you were letting go of the Org... which made me sad as I remember you from years and years ago.

However, if you're just letting go of the need to collect all releases... no big deal.

I've missed many releases that weren't worth the effort of tracking down for me. I'm confident I've missed nothing iconic.

If he releases something iconic that is destined to become a classic and reshape his legacy... we'll let you know and I'm sure it will reach some kind of physical state you can purchase.

P.S. Food for thought that you decribed digital music as disposable ...interesting.

Agreed. I only download stuff for a preview of something to hear if I want to buy it in physical form.

Not happy about the "digital" releases. I'm pretty much in line with your comments.

If I know Prince though....................these or some other material will show up on an official cd.

I'd say this $.88 cent stuff is financing the cost (2 some degree) of the official release coming down the road.

Just my twocents

I hope a feast is actually coming.

I find it kind of ironic that Prince went on the anti-digital campaign not long ago, but then, instead of (apparently) fighting for physical he seems, at least for now, to have given it up. Yeah--I know he was probably mostly griping about money issues with big download stores, but he complained about singles/albums and stuff about 1's and 0's and quality of sound and all, too.

I'm spending my $0.88, and probably wouldn't be listening to the physical copy if I had it (I rip and then set aside), but I'd like something solid that I'd still have if all my drives went ka-blooey. My physical Prince is all boxed up, but I know where it is if I need it. Stuff I've just had as files I've lost and had a tough time tracking down again, and that sucks, even if when I found it again it wasn't as great as I remembered ("Silver Tongue" was much better when I didn't have it than when I finally did again).

Are you gonna keep listening to the new stuff when you can? What if (and of course this won't happen) he dropped the perfect song--not "new thing that sounds like old perfect song Part II" (the best we might get), but literally THE PRINCE SONG THAT ACTUALLY DID ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING YOU EVER IMAGINED (WHICH MEANS IT'S COMPLETELY UNLIKE ANYTHING YOU EVER IMAGINED BUT MADE ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ELSE SEEM LIKE JOURNEYMAN WORK)--in other words, he really did it, once and for all, but it was only available (and would only ever be available) as a download:

Would you give in?

It's not gonna happen, of course. So you'll never have to make that choice, anyway. And considering how many people haven't bought anything in 10, 15, 20 years (and some who apparently have chosen not to hear anything either)--your choice not to pursue this little side road isn't that big a deal. It would be a bummer if you left the .org--you're often a voice of reason and taste.

It depends on who does the listening, if they're not serious music lovers, everything will be disposable, be it a physical product or an mp3.

I'm usually on the same page as you, Giovanni, but I think you're robbing yourself from the enjoyment of convenience. Nothing is wrong with having best of BOTH worlds smile

I do too G, but pretty soon i think we'll be stuffed. CD's, DVD's, Blu's and games are all going download. Vinyl might escape. I love having shelving stuffed full of movies etc, but it's over. Nearly. Shitty i know, but what can you do? confused

I get what you are saying. I was the same with albums in that I didn't start purchasing CDs until they stopped mass producing albums. And, now it's the same with CDs. Yet, I've just decided to take what I can get when it comes to Prince. It may not be the format that I like, but at least its Prince. So, since I feel from where you of coming, even if I don't fully agree, I love your posts so much I just want to sho' you some love.

Giovanni, I totally get what you're saying. $ 0,88 would probably be like € 0,70 so it's not a money issue. But dropping songs every once in a while for a price like that makes me feel like it's throwaway music. It just doesn't compare to buying a new LP. And I'm having a feeling that Prince IS gonna release an LP one of these days and these tracks might be on it. I'm in no hurry...

I understand because I also collect! but Prince is in a business. He can see that cds are going bye-bye and digital downloads is on the rise. I think the positive is he can record and release stuff on the fly. So we may get new songs he is still excited about and he doesn't have to work with record companies and most important he doesn't have to rely on shipping.

I know many of us has an emotional bond to Prince collection but in the end I think you will agree it's about the music. At first I felt the same back in 2001 when digital started to rise, I would never pay for downloads they felt like a ripoff when I could get the physical cd. Now I don't mind so much, with fast internet and lossless files.

Do you feel like you are missing out on music or missing out on another trinket for your Prince collection?

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

So you're saying you care about formats more than you care about having new Prince music.

What a weirdo.

Did you buy CD's that weren't available on vinyl? Because those aren't lossless either.

Hell, music isn't even hardly recorded in a true lossless process any more.

Personally, I hope he never releases another physical product. I don't need more shit cluttering up my life. Plus it really irritates these dinosaurs who haven't figured out that music is recorded to sound like shit these days and the bitrate of the end product is almost entirely irrelevant when no one knows how to mix and master music any more.

I get it. Prince is the only artist I'm willing to pay for digital downloads. And that's just because I'm obsessed with collecting everything he releases.

I also collect DVDs & Blurays. I have over 3,000 in my collection which I add to every week. I will not be buying digital copies of movies or TV shows. It will suck not adding new stuff to my collection, but, if I can't have a physical copy on the shelf within my collection, then it's not worth the $$.

I can't not buy new Prince music though, regardless of format.
