Thom Bell: Betcha By Golly Wow! Hey everyone,
I was curious to know if Thom Bell or any of the current members of The Stylistics have ever shared their thoughts about Prince's cover of Betcha By Golly Wow?

it's a pretty decent faithful and passionate interpretation. I'm sure he/they would be impressed.

I dont know about their thoughts, but I'm sure they were happy with the royalty cheques.
My thoughts, after enduring close to 4 years of the slave period and looking forward to what the new freedom would bring artistically we get one of the biggest own goals and letdowns of Prince's career (technically at the time).
His answer to WB was releasing a cover, it was bad enough he put 4 covers on the album, but heralding the post-WB period with this as a lead single still leaves me speechless. Considering it's a R&B ballad, that it was not made commercially available as a single in the US is particularly puzzling, regardless of the problems at EMI.
The actual version Prince does is OK, but doesn't add anything exceptional to the original, contrary to his latest benchmark on the subject of covers. (..but hey that was almost 20 years ago)
One thing that you cant take away from Prince's career whether a positive or negative move, he's one of the few in the industry that can say "I did it my way". For that he has my admiration even though there have been many questionable decisions. Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.
