Prince And Revisionist History (The New Songs = Civil War)

With the release of the new 3rd Eye Girl tracks, the Org has become an interesting place these days...

We all know that Prince fans have always been a split camp...But with the reaction to the latest Prince song ("That Girl Thang"), a lot of fans' slip is showing...

The way I look at it is simple: A song like "That Girl Thang" is pure, uncut Prince...It's without all the bells and whistles...It's a man with his guitar...

So I use such a track as a test for Prince fans...

If you can't dig a track like this, then you are a Prince fans who only got into him during the mid 80s Revolution years...

You probably r the Prince fan still searching for the same dude that was creating the Dream Factory with Wendy and Lisa...U want that "rock" leaning Prince...You want that "weird," risk-taking Prince...U don't care much for that "R&B" Prince, right? U r probably Prince/Wendy/Lisa fans (I'm both, BTW...I like my solo Prince and my Revolution era Prince too...)....

Listen, I get it...As much as I dig "Screwdriver" (and I do...the shit is just flat out effortless and fun and a smart opening single if ever officially released to the world) I can't take anyone seriously when they say that has been the best recent song released thus far in the last few weeks...

I've read a lot of bitching and moaning on this site...And I have to say I'm surprised...No, I'm shocked...

And don't it twisted...When the orginal "RNR Love Affair" was released I was one of the folks that viewed the song as WEAK and TIRED (thank god for the 7 REMIX...It saves the song)....Hell, it was lifeless...The kind of sleepy time bullshit that makes the man sound like he should give it up...

Same thing with that laughable "Summer" or whatever it was called (Tripe)..

So this is not a "Prince can do no wrong post"...

This is about a man who is finally doing what we want him to do: Drop quality songs straight to the fans without the hype and bullshit...

These songs have been good folks...U want groundbreaking, Dream Factory era stuff? How about the man crawl before he walks?I want Prince to release songs with STRONG re-play value...

That's what the new songs have..."Breakfast...", "Screwdriver," "Boyfriend," "That Girlfriend Thang"...These songs have been effortless in terms of feel and groove...That's all I need from Prince these days...

My wish one day is for Prince fans to learn something from Bruce Springsteen fans...They don't expect Bruce to reinvent the wheel...They just want to be entertained...

So going back to "That Girlfriend Thang"....

If you just can't get with it because the acoustic thing is not your speed or thing, I can dig this....

But people calling this uninspired are full of shit...lol...I like the fact that Prince seems to be finding inspiration from the late 70's era Prince and early '80s Prince...And he's doing it in such a way that's not forced (FINALLY!!!!).....It's as if fans are living through some revisionist history...As if Prince's musical greatness started in 1985-86.....

This is the Prince I want to hear: straight-no-chaser Prince; straight ahead songwriting...A GOOD FUCKING SONG....I haven't heard the man this raw in a minute...

Certainly "Prince" fans can't hate on that...

Right..........?

Again, if it's a "style" thing, I get that...

But as a Prince fan, it's shocking how some other "Prince" fans don't like that song...It's the essence of Prince in my humble opionion...

But what do I know? *Yeezy shrug*

I don't think you can draw any conclusions on how much someone is a fan (as if that was quantifiable anyway) by their reaction to one song - and why would you want to?

Pretty much every single song in the Prince canon divides opinion, there are people who don't like When Doves Cry and Kiss, there are even people who don't like Ronnie Talk 2 Russia, if you can believe that. Pfffft.

As I said on th ether site, I can get with the "not having to reinvent the wheel" comment regarding Prince.

I think my inital disappoinhtment was that it had been three years and all he came at us with was OIm your driver and you're my screw..rock out now" song.

After a second election of the first black pres, occupy wall street, tea party bs, drone controversy, fucjked economy, N Korea, middle east issues ..I wanted something deeper. Shit, even Nolan put current themes into his last two Batman flicks. I guess I wanted him to be Dylan and Springsteen. Or just more than Screwdriver..everyone got wet and hard becasue he was being so called overtly nasty again..I expect more than that.

But if I take the nont expecting wheel reinvention, then I guess I cant complain. The thing is, with the That Girl Thang, it makes it all right and back to the basics more than the produced and "completed" Screwdrivers singles. RNR singles , Boyfriend, etc...I mean, if he isnt going to go Dylan on us, its almost fulfilling enough to go real raw and impromtpu with That Girl Thang...

I guess we are back to 1999 era..everybodys got a bomb (guns, unemployment, fiscal, drones, etx) we could all die anyday..so lets just dance and fuck.

"Climb in my fur."

Dohh! There I was thinking I was a Prince fan but it turns out I can't be because I don't particularly like That Girl Thang.

Damn, I was mighty confused. Thanks for putting me straight Murph.

But that's you drawing that conclusion...The operative term is "you would think"...

Again, let me put this in caps....

MY POINT IS NOT TO SAY THAT I'M SIMPLY SHOCKED THAT ANY SELF-RESPECTING PRINCE FAN (do they even exist?lol) WOULD NOT LIKE A SONG LIKE "THAT GIRLFRIEND THANG"....IT'S THE PUZZLING REASONS THEY ARE GIVING FOR NOT LIKING SAID SONG...

And it's more than ironic considering that all we were hearing from the very same fans that Prince needs to take a more stripped-down approach to his music...

But as soon as he does that he's called uninspired...lol...

To me, all this says is SOME Prince don't know what they want....

I'm probably one of Prince's biggest supporters but Prince is slipping.

I'm glad he is doing his thing in 2013, but I can tell that he is on auto drive when it comes 2 creation, especially in the writing department.

I'm not complaining just an observation.

To me, he was slipping on some of that 20Ten....

And he was at his lowest with that "Hot Summer" garbage...Shit sounded like an outttake from The Banana Splits...

And the original "RNR Love Affair" was beyond tired...

But if this is autodrive give me more...I JUST WANT TO HEAR GOOD SONGS....That's what the old man has been doing...

As for your "observation" it's much needed...

Respect...

We are yesterday people ;-)

All the classics are great, but it's nice to hear some new tunes...

By the way; who makes classics these days?

Let's change the game...

Name one band or solo artist who writes/performs classics

Agreed but I always have 2 put Prince into a special category. When u have done as much as he has, there really isn't any wiggle room 2 go anywhere else. Catch 22 so 2 speak.

Murph....reading all that was a bit of a drag wink LOL

I think people have been like this for years in terms of 'civil war' but it's not really a war it's more an 'uncivil debate', it's basically the 1978-1995/6 camp vs. the 1978-2013 camp.

I disagree with you on RnR Love Affair, think it was a good more mature effort and I personally prefer it to the rather immature Screwdriver, however i did like the Screwdriver remix and I disliked the RnR 7 remix to confuse things further!

Agree that this Girl Thing is like early/ original Prince although i did hear a strong resemblance to Kate Bush.... nice to hear a song that's not overly polished and souped up.

nod I'm one of those. I lump it in with Graffiti Bridge (the song) for the occasional bit of crapola our man releases.

As for "That Girl Thang" love it!

Totally disagree with Murph - there is no way in a million years you can categorise Prince fans that easily. The whole point about Prince fans is the huge diversity of people he has following him.

One song is certainly not a way to categorise. I am pretty certain (without giving it too much thought right now) that there is at least one song on EVERY Prince album that I could live without (might not hate it but certainly don't love it).

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

RRA

I don't know about the subconcious failings that the OP seems to blame for why people hate his new stuff.

All I know is, I've been enjoying most of it. (The worst IMO is the released RNR Love Affair, which has a pleasant melody.)

Can I re-play your songs? That's my question on the new Prince material...

And my answer is: Yep...

U guys want him to drop some mind-altering shit (songwriting...musically)...I just want him to do the one thing he has been hot/cold on doing for some while now...

Just make some good fucking songs...

And these latest batch of tracks are just that...If he keeps this up, I'm good...

So far nobody named one... Mint condition was only mentioned because they were a support act for Prince once...

What I mean is the time of real classics is over... Who will remember 'todays' top 40 in 30 years? Or is it a matter of growing up in a certain period of time? I mean, I like the whole lo-fi thing that's going on, but I don't hear classic material... It's all disposable, if you get my drift...

Yep....I've said there has always been a Civil War in the Prince fan camp...

The reason for this post was to point out MY puzzlement at Prince fans not digging probably the most stripped down, straight forward P songs we have gotten in like forever ("That Girl Thang")...

To me, it makes me wonder if something else is going on when it comes to some Prince fans...
