Do me, Baby On PrinceVault it says about this song that it was written by André Cymone but CREDITED to Prince. But does anyone know why the song was credited Prince? Since Prince wrote and writes almost everything himself I find it kinda strange that he should be credited a song that he did not in fact write, and I also think it´s strange that he should demand it. Are there any stories about why Prince is credited as a songwriter when he in fact wasn´t? | |

Well Prince is known for taking other people's stuff and not giving them credit, or transferring credit to elsewhere (The Belle of St. Mark being a usual example)
The source on this one always seemed dodgy to me though. It sounds nothing at all like André's other stuff. I'd believe it if people were claiming he wrote the basic bass groove but the song itself? nah
edit: Oh I see it now says there's an earlier version with Andre on vocals, is this circulating? I'd be interested in being proved completely wrong here [Edited 2/17/13 6:38am] | |

I've always taken the claim that Andre wrote the song skeptically. He might have provided the foundation for the song, but there are so many stages involved when you start with an idea for a song and what the recorded result will be like. | |

The other song that he allegedly "took" was Party Up, written originally by Morris Day. Again, we don't really now how different what we hear on the record is from what Morris had done originally. | |

Andre said it was "Controversy". But it doesn't matter. Prince reworked it like he did "Kiss" & their his & only his onemanband projects.His voices & instruments & arrangements.
