Purple and Gold EP / 20Ten Deluxe

Dear .Org,

I know Purple and Gold appears to generate an almost unanimous scathing review from most people, but without hearing it for some time, I decided to compile an EP of tracks recorded and released during this era and, despite the flogging I will no doubt receive here, I think the song itself works as a quite wonderful, rousing opener.

Before you critique, I would encourage you to listen to these songs, potentially as arranged here (or otherwise) and, like me, you might be pleasantly surprised with a delightful, quirky, selection of Prince songs that flow together quite seamlessly, starting with a guitar-based theme, before becoming decidely poppier, before moving into somewhat darker, funkier territory.

01. Purple and Gold

02. Cause and Effect

03. Hot Summer

04. Rich Friends

05. Extraloveable

06. Extraloveavle [Extended]

07. Laydown [Extended]

It is also quite possible that alongside extended versions of the 20Ten album's songs themselves, some of the above songs were considered as potential additions to the anticipated 20Ten Deluxe release, but of course I could be wrong. At the very least, it makes for an enjoyable additional selection of outtakes to include alongside the regularly released 20Ten album as well as providing a useful insight into Prince's studio 'progression' during this era and beyond. There may also be other songs to consider, but alas, none are coming to mind (except perhaps Looking For A Penny In A Large Room With No Light, but I believe this was re-recorded prior to 20Ten and after Lotus Flower, which makes sense as the instrumentation is far more organic).

love,

Spirit

eek ill

01. Purple and Gold

Dire - an embarrassingly poor effort

02. Cause and Effect

A great track - great intro and brilliant guitar work

03. Hot Summer

FDeluxe critique is spot on

04. Rich Friends

Interesting track, listenable

05. Extraloveable

I play this quite a bit, so a thumbs up

06. Extraloveavle [Extended]

Yep, I like this

07. Laydown [Extended]

I suspect this is the unedited version that would've likely appeared on 20TEN Deluxe

In A Large Room With No Light - Renato seriously eeded to go after this disaster razz

Personally I found Cause & Effect more embarrassing than Purple and Gold but hey...

I imagine what we are getting now from 3rd eye girl are songs possibly considered for albums from the 6-7 years. 20ten deluxe included (Laydown Ext. contests to this theory)

From an artist of Prince's stature 'Purple & Gold' is hands down the worst song i've ever heard. It really is that bad. None of his peers or contempories have a record as bad as this. Fact. 100% no debate.

It's best forgotten, and never mentioned again.

I think Purple and Gold is quite an interesting track. I hated it for a long while but have started to like it in the past year. I can think of many other Prince tracks much worse than this. (Jughead, I rock therefore I am, Da da da, All the midnights...)

"Purple And Gold" is what it is - an NFL "fight/spirit" song. It's not meant to be a pop song for your enjoyment. Most college "fight/spirit" songs are just as bad. For what it is, it's fine.

OMMFG! What are you trying to do, kill someone! That's not a combination you mess with! That's like mixing ammonia with bleach!

I listen to all of these songs, quite regularly.

Except Purple & Gold. I have nearly stricken it from the official record.

But I do try to give it another chance once in awhile. It just isn't going to happen for this song....

And if people didn't break their necks to find the track it probably would've never been heard outside of that football game.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

"Cause & Effect", "Extraloveable (2012)" and "Laydown" are all good songs (it took me a while to warm up to "Cause & Effect" though and I still think it would need some serious mixing and editing). The rest I don't really want to be reminded of too often. "Purple & Gold" could have been better had he really used the same type of instrumentation as old-fashioned marching bands use, but that "R&B" production really doesn't work.

football "fight/spirit" songs have some fight and some spirit in them.

this is a dirge.

Personally, I think y'all are on glue. Cause & Effect was a GREAT song! The playing throughout is just excellent. I like the lyrical content alot. And it's just bursting with energy. Of course, I'm in the minority that thinks the 2012 Extraloveable was a masterpiece, so there's bound to be some disagreement.

It's a fight-song in high heels. That's what's wrong with it ... sad

An instrumental remix that could very well be intended as the "extended" portion.

After reading this thread, I went back and listened to "Purple and gold". I couldn't stomache it, it's as bad as I remember LOL

What about "Stratus"? I liked that one. That was on the disc I made too, or "In a large room with no light". That was there too. I made my own version of "Rich friends" taking out the radio station name from the start and end, unfortunately nothing I tried worked for the middle part but the begining and end sound spotless.

I haven't heard extended versions of "Extralovable" or "Laydown"....Are they available on Amazon or iTunes?

EDIT:
Oops, I see you mentioned "In a large room...."

There's a clean version of Rich Friends out there. No DJ. Better sound quality.

I dislike those songs so strongly that I didn´t even download them illegally, let alone pay for them.

Wow, Otter. That is the most cosmic coincidence ever. You and I must be still on the same soul page. I just this minute pulled out the disc I that decided to burn, with the following track list:

1. Cause and Effect

2. Hot Summer

3. Rich Friends

4. Same Page, Different Book

5. Laydown (extended)

6. Purple And Gold

(I put Purple and Gold at the end because sonically it flowed better from Laydown and I left off Extraloveable because it seemed to be marketed as a stand-alone release through iTunes.)

Pretty sweet EP!

Jessie,

Same soul page indeed...

GREAT TO SEE YOU, AGAIN.
I do hope you are well.
