I don't know how many he has.

well i suppose one album per year would be the benchmark - and i think he's pretty much achieved that, if you consider some years he released more than one album or the NPGMClub which had about 2-3 albums worth of songs (choc invasion/slaughterhouse) - plus you could add in the satellite projects (NPG, madhouse, Time, Sheila E, Family, Bria etc).
I've not counted but well over 50 albums!!!???
So in answer to your question: Umm, depends on definition of should he have DONE more already or should he release more from now onwards?
Yes he should release more. [Edited 2/20/13 12:48pm]

well i think it's pretty obvious that we as a hardcore fanbase could handle a lot more than what he releases.
an album every 4 months would be ideal to me. so 3 albums each year
he could release the odd album commercially to stores or itunes and just put the weird stuff or the fluff, whatever, up on his own site.
should have been doing that for years now and made a pretty penny in the bargain. then, whenever one of his commercial releases hit big time the traffic to his site would increase and more people would check out the other stuff on the site.
win win situation.
but perhaps too much logic for prince world

Exaggeration or what. Loads of those either simply don't exist, or had little P involvement and can't be classed as his. If if you believe wholheartedly in what you typed, you missed TC Ellis' album. So nerrr.

Judging by his recent material (past five years), I would say one new studio album every two years and say half an album or so's 'odd tracks for download' per year (ie 3rdeyegirl stuff, ok but nothing outstanding imo. Minor material for me, but nice to keep the natives happy between hopefully stronger material on proper albums ).
He doesn't seem to have the creativity and the 'midas touch' anymore of being able to make almost everything he touches great, like he had in the '80s. And to be fair, no one else has since.).
IMO - he needs to concentrate more on writing stronger songs before recording them (he's always been too eager to record imo, hence some songs end up weak and underdeveloped), and working on creating a new/ more interesting production sound than he's used in recent years.
Also with his apparent short attention span, he should only release material he really cares about, so he'll be more likely to see all stages through, eg CD release, promotion, appearances, singles/ downloads, related website etc. Not just move on to the next thing without learning fully from the previous experience.
He's 54 now and more of a man of the world than he was 25 years ago. would like to hear more about where he's at now in his songs, like he did at times in the '80s and also during the Emancipation and Rainbow Children era imo, rather than what often sound like 'work songs I did to get some stuff out there' .
Releasing a few (admittedly quite fun) downloads certainly ain't the future imo, unless there's more thematic/ conceptual unity in the songs/ release order of the songs. His last good album for me was Lotusflow3r, more of a proper artistic statement than just a bunch of tracks put together as an album. Lotus would be good if released on CD or as download.
