Prince Playing A Tour Or A Show Without Cover Songs

When was the last time Prince did a tour of no cover songs or at the very least performed one cover song. Prince going forward has a new band, new vibe and new opportunity to reach back and play not only the hits but the album cuts from his most popular albums. Obviously, Prince is a hypocrite on his stance on the issue of performing and recording cover songs, but for once, it would be cool to see him play even a show with of his songs from the various eras of his career.

i am curious what band he takes with him on a festival, stadium tour. My opinion is that the girl trio band would be fantastic in intimite settings...in a stadium i dont know....Or would girl trio be assisted by shelby and co...would regret that as i liked the rawness of the things we saw in 2013 till now......Only Prince knows....But Prince playing on festivals....i guess we can expect hits hits and more hits and then most certain he will get back to his 20ten band....My advice...and wish biggrin : Prince has to play only small time venues this summer and play Smukfest for the public who only go there to see what Prince is like....

A proper tour...hmm... off the top of my head I would say Act 1 and Act 2. Man was Act 1 an incredible tour.

For many reasons. Prince was still innovative, daring and well... still classic Prince. Also musically inspired. 1993 was definitely a huge creative peak. With the on set of the Warners Bros feud, the name change, the new material, being a Prince fan at that time had so many cliff hangers and what if's and anything was possible moments it was like watching your favorite movie on the edge of your seat. Those above mentioned years are nothing more than remnants of what once was.

"The Rainbow Children" 2002: Although "Pass The Peas" (J. Brown) was played regularly and "Whole Lotta Love" (Led Zeppelin) sometimes, too, this tour was mostly free of cover songs.

He covers too much of his own stuff.

The same old hits.

Maybe this year he can do a different type of show.

There were some awesome moments in 1993, but the ONA tour of 2002 and Musicology tour of 2004 were much better than the 1993 tour. At the ACT I tour, I had to put up with Tony M. Any amount of that assclown on stage lowers the overall rating of any show. The Act II tour is really good, but Prince somehow didn't get as much out of that talented band as he could have.

The only short definition of an alternative is:

concept tour

(think of ONA, Lovesexy, etc)

Or any other move that radically changes the setlist.

A whole tour without purple rain, that's been a while, but would be something.

No kiss, no raspberry beret.

He can do it.

But will he choose to?

A tour that makes him happy would be the best I guess.

Well, if that makes him happy, he should do it.

And if he bores us to death along the way, it's a small sacrifice for his happiness, right?

The answer to the above aforementioned question would be Act 1 & Act 2. No cover songs were played during that tour at all. It was also the last tour were covers did not appear. Every subsequent tour after that included covers. I thought that was the ?

Yes, indeed.

There are a lot of great bands in the small club circuit that are worthwhile seeing.

I'm sure it was the Game Boyz that really added to that tour.

Thanx Big Chick for answering my question. I would love to see P do a cover free show or tour, but what bothers me is that he plays covers by the same artists (JB, Joni, Sly, Larry Graham). The one cover off the top of my head that did impress me was "Creep" by Radiohead. He's really deep in the r&b/funk covers but if he insists on doing covers, how about some rock songs and only play one cover per show.

Well, Prince did play over 100 different songs on the W2A tour. Sad thing, is that the arrangements were so watered down that the band sometimes didn't know if they were playing The Beautiful Ones, Adore or Insatiable and would get confused. You can play a lot of different songs with similar chord structures and weak arrangements. The casual fan is just excited to hear Prince singing something different. Fans with well-trained ears are a bit frustrated of late. Still, from late 1995 to 2001, Prince was progressively becoming way too inconsistent and Medley heavy. He rebounded with great tours in 2002 and 2004. He can do it again if he wants to.

I AGREE!! Act I was and still is my favorite tour of his career. Act II is a close second. I miss the 90s as that was my favorite time as a fan. To me that was the glory days!! I wish and hope that one day a proshot show materializes from both of these tours

Its not going to be that new. He is still going to have the girl backup singers and the horns. Don't expect too much different on the big shows.

It would be refreshing to hear some new music (new Prince music, that is) at a Prince concert for a change. I've decided that I will not buy tickets to anymore concerts unless he's on tour promoting a new album and playing music from that album. No more "Don't Stop til You Get Enough", no more Sly Stone covers, no more protegées singing other people's pop songs from the mid-to-late 90s.

If he wants to do covers, fine.....blow our minds at an after-show, in the fashion of Just My Imagination. But save the main performance for Prince music.

A new set list is badly, badly needed. There's a reason why people haven't thought of anything except Purple Rain or Kiss when you say "Prince".

Yeah he did . They also played "La,La,La, Means I Love U", "Didn't ya know" everynight, "Soul Sacrafice/Santana Medley" more often than not on the U.S. tour.

yes, because the few people on this board do not represent the world at large. the ticket buyers for the most part want the hits. when will people undrstand that the fans on most message boards represnt the smallest fraction of fans worldwide, thats any artist's message board, not just this one.
