Prince news about Jimmy Fallon, Live Out Loud etc. courtest of Dr. Funkenberry
[Always link to source - luv4u] ---> http://www.drfunkenberry....my-fallon/
Last night on the PRINCE spreecast DrFunkenberry hosts with Seth Everett, we talked about several news items that will be happening with PRINCE. Here is an outline of the news discussed: #1. That there will be a Jazz Fest Announcement coming...which has now happened as PRINCE will be performing...z Festival. #2 The Smuk Fest. PRINCE agreed to play if they changes his night's name to "The Beautiful Experience".... #3 The NPG drummer position is currently being occupied by Ronald Bruner Jr. aka RBJ, whose 2nd of 3 callbacks happens this week. After the 3rd, his position will then be determined. To join this band, there are several rigorous initiations that take place...to least of which is a personality analysis. #4 Hannah Ford, Donna Grantis, & Ida Nielson are in the studio everyday recording new material with PRINCE. He is the primary songwriter but not the primary guitarist. PRINCE is every day gaining more confidence in Donna's talent and actually lets her take a bulk of the solos on the project. They have recorded about 14 songs and "Live Out Loud" will be released as soon as the promotional clip for it is finished. Check 3rdEyeGirl.com soon for that. #5 Speaking of which: There still is no word as to the true identity of 3rd Eye Girl. It seems to be growing though. Photographers, web site designers, and film editors have been hired to work on several unnamed projects. There is work going on at The Park 24/7....that's for sure. #6 PRINCE & his team have been in back and forth talks with the Jimmy Fallon show. PRINCE definitely wants to be on the week of the Carnegie Hall Tribute. (3113 cough cough 3113) #7 FDeluxe sans Jellybean Johnson has been added to the line up for the Tribute. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

#2: - the reason for naming the concert "The Beautiful Experience" maybe seems outdated to you..
like you know it's the name of the Maxi Single to The Most Beautiful Girl in 1994:
but the (nick) name for this danish festivel, is actually "Smuk fest" (as mentioned above), which means in english something like "Beauty Party".. named this way because the festival is held, every year, in the woods right outside of the city Skanderborg. I have never been there, but the woods are actually very beautiful... the audience is standing under a lot of very large and beautiful trees during the concert, (afaik)..
therefor "The Beautiful Experience" gives good meaning (to me at least, haha).
It's not a reference to the old Maxi-single,
it's more a reference to the name of the festival "Smuk fest".

Some good info here...what I get from all of this is that they r on a VIBE that can't b stopped. Nothing stops P & the NPG in 2013!

Exactly! 2013 looks and sounds very promising But, I am curious about item #3. I wonder what that means as I was under the assumption that Hannah Ford is the drummer. (?) Dad. Cartoonist. #3. What's the point of positioning this new all-girl band as his front and the hook for the latest round of promotion if he's still hiring other random, interchangeable musicians?
#4. I really have no interest in listening to guitar on a Prince record that isn't played by Prince.
#5. Are we really supposed to still be playing along with this "Who is 3rdEyeGirl?" bullshit?

I've been thinking/saying that the whole 3rdeyegirl thing is 1 of 2 separate projects. I see "3rdeyegirl" is to Prince as "Tin Machine" is to Bowie. (I know some folks here like to compare Prince to Bowie) That might be a bad eample but I think you know what I'm getting at. My guess is that RBJ will be part of the NPG which will focus more on playing Prince's hits for a tour??? Then again will he take the 3 girls out on the road too? Obviously the latter for the jazzy funky stuff and the 3 girls for the gritty rock sound.
All speculation at this point. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!"

I have to agree. I don't question Donna's talent but I wanna hear Prince on guitar. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!"

Sooo working with the girls in the studio on 14 songs? Sounds like a new album to me!

Fully agreed on all points. I think I'm done with this crap.
Let me just add that #3 contradicts itself... "currently occupied" vs. "position will be determined".
I have heard that drummer before, and he is incredible... similar to John Blackwell's style. "He's a musician's musician..."

Giovanini777,
What has happened to you? You seem to be consistently derailing towards a really negative attitude.
Perhaps it's worthwhile bearing in mind that all these 'news' items are just what they are; nothing more, nothing less (except to say, it's more trivia than we have ever had, certainly before the age of the Internet). I am quite positive you still enjoy the music, so don't let this trivia tire you. It's just meant to be a touch of fun.
I appreciate your perspectives regarding the 'physical' product and, whilst many would agree with how frustrating it is to keep up with his haphazard/lacklustre distribution methods, there are ways and means of collecting Prince's product via other means than following 24/7 of the 'news' items.
It's simply a time of change for Prince and the creation/distribution of his work; who knows if, or how long, it will last, so hold on to your wig.

3: I'm not sure hte all girl band is the right band for a jazz festival and don't see anything wrong with his having two bands. I could even see doing two sets at a concert, one with each band.
4: It's not the first time he's had someone else play guitar. Does it make Kiss any less of a song to see Wendy playing the guitar?
5: agreed | |

Now that Andy's album is out, perhaps 3rdeyegirl is his new bit on the side.
Nowhere does it say he's working on his new album with them - just a new album. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It doesn't even say album.
It's interesting to me how that is worded. Sounds like the girls are recording the material. If it was for a Prince album, would it be Prince in the studio recording with the girls? I don't know, just looking forward to more Prince music. I don't want protege nonsense. RIP

Donna playing guitar on his music is great in my opinion. From what I heard on the live version on Screwdriver she kicked Prince's butt on that song and really made it GREAT!! Prince's guitar style is pretty repetitive and having her play the guitar parts is exciting to me as it will have a different sound to it. Great news to me and I am excited to hear it. It is surprising that he puts all this promtion in the new all girl band and then just dumps them for another band. That has to be disheartening to the girls. For everyone mad about it just don't support him. Its pretty simple really. Thats whats great about what he is doing with the downloads. You don't have to buy it. Just get the ones that you like. I hope their material is like the Screwdriver live style. That song really rocked!!

Ok, there are two ways you can look at this.
1. That its nonsense again. That Prince is his usual non committal self, that things are in disarray, and there is no respect for thefans fandom in these one offshoot events. It becomes frustrating and silly. Kid shit that belongs in the 70'soon some Partidge Family fanclub steeze, rather than a professional way.
OR
2. This is Prince's way of actually letting us in on some things that are being worked on..letting some fans in on the process of projects..een if they arent going to be fulfilled but he lets us see the fruition instead of letting them be his vaulted throwaways. People complained for 2.5 years that there was no Prince news./ So maybe..just maybe...he is letting folks in on some things that are going on even if he isnt going to use them completely or whatever.
Either Way: this is kind of a strange manner in this day and age for the MUSICIAN OF OUR TIME..to be presented. No dis to jeremy, Hanna, Allo, Ida, Shelby, Elisa or whomever he uses to get the word out about his ideas..but for a legendary musican of our time..maybe THE one of our time....it is ..lets say...an extremely weird way to do so.At times Im like..'don't you respect how you present yourself and your works to the world?"..I mean if all he is worried about is walking with a pimp walk and a cane at the gramys..then so be it, but Inwold think someone somewhere in his stead would try to present some of this whole shit with some dignity and pride that goes beyond "ah that nukka is funky/cool!"
Somebody holla if ya hear me..somebody give me an amen..somebody, anybody, even if its just one person, please let me know that you feel what I am saying. I invested years in this purple madness, please tell me Im not wrong in expecting more thana proverbial Parker Bros Game Of Life end result.

I think you make a good point. But personally, I think that Prince is (in his head) still 27 years old. To become a legend requires accountability, and Prince has never wanted to be accountable to anyone - including himself. He doesn't want to abide by contracts. He doesn't want to abide by the unwritten laws of relationships. He wants to be footloose and horny, bare-assed and free.
Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being 27 in your head - most of us, no matter how old we get to be chronologically, still feel young inside. But for most people, those young feelings are tempered by a knowledge that there are appropriate ways to behave at any given age. Prince may flout convention, of course (he's pretty much based his entire career on it). But at some point, he has to realize that instead of coming across as quirky and charming, he's eventually just going to look senile.

I found that live version of Screwdriver to be more subdued and less entertaining than either of the 2 studio versions.

Both of you make excellent points. There is little further to add, except to say, I don't expect much of anything will change so long as Prince prefers his independent (read: amateur) style of presentation (which has almost ALWAYS been the case, unless other professionals have been at the helm). But those days of professional marketing, largely Warner Brother-influenced, are long, long gone. So, it is unfortunately just what it is; a legacy left to effectively obliterate in the proverbial gutter and gather dust, unless of course Prince decides to FUNDAMENTALLY straighten his act out for the benefit of the presentation of his own legend. It may yet happen, as he is a mercurial creature, but I think it's highly unlikely at this stage, not least of which being because the financial terms with third parties are clearly unsatisfactory to him to make it worth his while to preserve the presentation of his work to the high standards it really should be in this day and age. Bottom line, I think he is too busy living in the present, showcasing "fun" in his own impish way.

I think he does realize how important his legacy is and how much he is beloved by those who appreciate music. He wants to put that to use in service of a goal that has been important to him for decades, which is to change the industry by taking power away from executives and middlemen and giving it to the musicians. He has not yet figured out a way to do that, but at least it is an understandable goal.
