Girls & Boys ~Prince & the Revolution

Music From the Motion Picture Under The Cherry Moon

Maybe
Meet me in another world
Vous êtes très belle, mama, girls and boys

Your favorite live performance?

Characters in the video?

Video facts?

instruments used?

musicians featured?

song involvement?

...and above all in the sensational "Girls & Boys,"

Prince conceives a clean, diamond-hard style that could spawn years of imitations.

Happiness in its uncut form
Is the feeling that I get in your warm, warm...
Happy's what I get when we do what we do
Happiness, mama, is being with U ... good Lord

Meet me somewhere after dawn ...

I was so excited when he played this at the Rio show I was at. I finally got to do the "Girls & Boys" dance. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Favorite live performance is from the SOTT tour. It is from a bootleg, but not sure of the name of it. Sheila E sings the lines, "Life is precious baby, love is so rare. I can take the breakup if you say that you care." I rewind that part of the song like 10 times when I listen to it.

Also loved the bands entrances in the video and Wendy and Susannahs look. Kind of annoying that you could tell Prince's performance and the bands were done at separate times.

What about Prince on the same stage parts with Eric Wally Jerome Gregory

and the ending is the whole band with Prince posing

Initial tracking took place on 8 July, 1985 at the Washington Avenue Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA. Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA, but Prince preferred the track without orchestration, and chose to use the track without orchestration for the final release.

Girls and boys!

He only knew her 4 a little while
But he had grown accustomed 2 her style
She had the cutest ass he ever seen
But he did 2, they were meant 2 be
They loved 2 kiss on the steps of Versailles
It looked like rain, mama, birds do fly

CHORUS:
I love U baby, I love U so much
Maybe we can stay in touch
Meet me in another world, space, and joy
Vous êtes très belle, mama, girls and boys {U're very pretty, ...}

He gave her all the love that anyone can
But she was promised 2 another man
He tried so hard not 2 go insane
Birds do fly, it looks like rain

CHORUS

Life is precious baby, love is so rare
I could take the breakup if U say that U care
He had 2 run away, his pride was 2 strong
It started raining, baby, the birds were gone, oh

Maybe (CHORUS)
Meet me in another world
Vous êtes très belle, mama, girls and boys

I want U, baby (CHORUS)
Maybe we can play 2day
Vous êtes très belle, girls and boys

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I looked at it again and there is the video take with Prince and the band and then the clips from the G&B scene from the movie.

Of course there are the scenes with Prince Jerome (solo) and Kristen

Under the Cherry Moon film score

22. Girls & Boys (making a scene at the restaurant)

Christopher Tracy: [writing something on a napkin] It's obvious that little Miss Mary has never been off the city block.
[holds up napkin, which has "Wrecka Stow" written on it]
Mary: What is that? Some new language?
Christopher Tracy: Read it. Do you know what it is?
Mary: It's nothing, you ninny. And you know it, but you won't confess it because you're such a coward.
Christopher Tracy: It is something, something you don't know, and you won't confess that because *you're* a coward!
Mary: This is silly, and you're a child!
Christopher Tracy: [taunting Mary] I go to dinner without my father's permission. Now, read it aloud so we can all hear how knowledgeable you are!
Mary: Wrecka stow.
Christopher Tracy: [laughs at Mary's pronounciation] Do you know what it is?
Mary: Wrecka stow, wrecka stow, it's nothing!
Christopher Tracy: [laughing] It is something. Come on, say it again louder.
Mary: Wrecka stow.
Christopher Tracy: Louder!
Mary: Wrecka stow! I give up. What is it?
Christopher Tracy: If you wanted to buy a Sam Cook a'blum, where would you go?
Mary: [rolls her eyes] The wrecka stow.

Following the smash success of its predecessor "Kiss",

"Girls & Boys" peaked at number 11 in the UK charts,

but was not released as a single in America.

Prince's former drummer, Bobby Z. later commented that the song may have helped the entire album and film achieve bigger success, 'second singles sometimes weren't right...

Kiss was a complete smash and set the album up huge.

In my opinion it should then have been Girls & Boys, not Mountains'.

The music video for the single consisted of clips from the film and separately-shot footage of The Revolution, including Prince's then-fiancee Susannah Melvoin.

Girls & Boys is a funk offering featuring both live drumming as well as Linn drum machine.

The keyboard hook is a peculiar duck-like sound.

This is the first official Prince single to include saxophone contributions of Eric Leeds.

The lyrics speak of characters similar to Christopher and Mary from Under the Cherry Moon, although their actions are not seen in the film.

The song includes a seduction spoken by Marie France in French,

as well as an early attempt by Prince to deliver a short rap.

Background vocals are Sheila E., Wendy & Lisa, and Susannah Melvoin.

heart

what can i say other than

i love it baby, i love it so much

love the song, love the video too

the black and white, the soirée setting

Prince cavorting on the piano

the band walkin' in with a Savoir-faire attitude

Eric making his entrance while blowin' his sax

for me this song is all about the sax

Jerome crackin' up over Prince saying 'Boo' at the end of the video

while calling the band by their names

i always thought that to be remarkable, especially in hindsight

Marie France - French spoken word (credited for "French seduction")

Marie France

Marie France is a graduate of fine arts from a Beaux Arts School and of liberal arts from the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She has been designing costumes for 27 years, and began her career collaborating with musician-composer Prince, designing his features "Purple Rain" and "Under the Cherry Moon", and his music videos.

Maybe we can play 2day

U were on the other end of the room
U were dancing so hard I could smell your perfume
Your smile tells me that we should talk...
On the dance floor, baby
Make that call 4 me
Oh yes, baby - sex and rest
And U won't resist it
U know U'll like that, baby, oh ow!
I will wrap my legs around U, baby
4 hours and hours I want 2 amaze U, baby
Flowers in your bath, love in your sheets
Make love, make love - where will we meet?

This song is a perfect example of Prince having his own sound ie Purple Music

I think this song shows Prince creating sounds not following trends. Even where the little 'rapping' comes into the song, it doesn't follow suite with 'Rap' styles that were out there. He didn't change to get with that genre, he changed it... I love this songs

And the video just reminds me of how Under the Cherry Moon should have been and why having band scenes would have blown the movie away...

I remember seeing the trailer and the way it played out looked like there were possible band scenes and I must admit I was disappointed, cause Girls & Boys video was seriously awesome

Sometimes it pisses down in April

Next up, 'Girls And Boys' is an adolescent 'Lady Marmalade' replete with "sauce" French bits and set to the beat of 'Take Me With U'.
