Could "no albums" mean "more songs"?

While we've grown quite accustomed to taking Prince's declarations about how he's going to work "from now on" with a grain of salt, I had a thought on his latest announcment that he was not recording albums, just songs.

Assuming that mantra sticks around longer than the average used car warranty...

Is it possible that such an approach could benefit fans who simply clamour for his music, including songs he or previous record companies felt didn't work on an album? If he, or a record company, isn't concerned with releasing songs in a collection that work together or fit within an 80 minute timespan, could we not see songs released on 3rdeyegirl.com or 20pr1nc3.com that may not otherwise have seen the light of day due to their inability to fit the flow of an album? Could his song output increase as a result?

I hope so. Even if that means more "throwaways" surface, there's a chance for more gems. And I think we have a handful of gems already this year.

it will certainly mean more songs. as long as prince doesn't get bored

or jaded.

an official album, released/distributed through a major company that

promotes it somewhat would mean 10 songs.

probably a bit of a tour and that's it.

now he can just release whatever he feels like, whenever he feels is

the right time.

we've already got 4 new studiotracks by now:

01. rock n roll love affair

02. screwdriver

03. same page, different book

04. breakfast can wait

so that only means 6 more songs and you've got an album's worth.

since it's only feb 5th now it's a pretty safe bet that we will get more

than one album's worth of material this year.

plus there's the live stuff that seems to be coming (montreux, and a

possible dakota release perhaps).

it's great when prince is a completely free agent since he can do the

things he feels like in the moment and that's usually more new stuff

for us.

the set up is similar to npgmc though, so it's not completely new to

most of us, i guess.

I think you're on to something. At the very least, I expect we'll get the new tracks played at the Dakota (live and by Rashida).

Coupla questions:

Will all the previous songs previewed going to be made available? (Same Page, Chapter & Verse etc)

Why are some mp3 and others WAV?

Is the 2013 site just for videos?

Why such a non commercial name as 3rd Eye Girl?
Wouldn't Prince.com be better/more commercial?

If so, it would probably get boring after a while. Sure, now it's exciting, but if he keeps dropping songs on the net one after the other, sooner or later everybody will go, ah...another song... boredA new album, however, is something to look forward to.

I'm really interested in what he's going to do with the songs once they're "out there". Particularly in the live arena, where he seems to have forgotten most of what he's released in the last 15 years. He could also do t-shirts/clothing, posters/prints and other merchandise based around song titles or lyrics. Lastly, this release method SCREAMS for some 7" singles to be pressed. Screw Driver and Breakfast Can Wait as a double a-side 7 inch.... shoooot! People would snap those up in a hot second.

Ooooo now you're talking

Extraloveable and Extraloveble Remix (Instrumental from Andy Allo's Facebook) that would be another cool little 7" also the 7"s could come with a free Wav download of the tracks

There's sooo much he could do

Ideally, he would continue with a new track or two at the beginning of every month, but also have a larger album project to hang the flurry of promotion/attention around. Best of both worlds and keeps everyone interested.

He can either release an album or a single in a physical form or I won't be buying them. I refuse to buy simply a download. A free download, yes, but to buy one, no. And even if I had a desire to buy one, I'm not putting my credit card info out there for something that costs like a dollar. Hell, I recently got burned with a virus protection service that recently expired and they just automatically charged my account this year because they had the number from the previous year. I was going to renew it anyway but you just don't assume that I'm going to renew it and charge my account.

I wish people would stop believing that "no albums" nonsense.

Prince is not going to stop making albums.

He's going through a phase, one that he'll give up and move on to something else.

This 'single' approach is going to yield more music. Even if he drops only 2 tracks

a month, that's 24 songs this year. 3 tracks and you get Emancipation.

So far, out of the 4 things he's made available, there's one track I really like: Screwdriver

But if he keeps that up, by the end of year's time there will be 12 tracks at a minimum that I will really like.

However, I really like 'albums'. When an artist has to focus his mind and create a 'concept' and home his craft to make a single statement, you end up with something that really is more than the sum of its parts.

Trent Reznor's Downward Spiral, to me, is far more interesting than when he flooded his fans with a whole mess of tracks for one of his more recent albums. I really just like focus. When Prince does it, he doesn't always write an album I like, but he always writes something I find interesting. That's more than can be said about so many top selling artists out there.

(Breakfast Can Wait, Same Page Different Book, remixes, etc.). I hope.

Oh, I don't believe that shit. That little heffer has told so many lies, he should become a Republican. lol I've heard that "retiring the hits" lie so many times, he should make it a chorus in one of his songs. lol

I don't count songs on youtube or only played on radio as officially released. They've been aired, yes - but they're not commercially available.

The 'bored or jaded' part is particularly important considering the amount of people here moaning about quality and technical issues.

I experienced no technical problems and am happy with the sound. He gave us 4 new, excellent songs for about 50p each for f's sake.

I thought the Lotusflow3r site was a mess, but this 3rdeye girl site was straightforward and transparent. I hope Prince continues to use it and it's a success. Also, that those who are happy with it speak up or vote with their wallets.

i agree. i fail to see how the site could be such a 'mess' as people are claiming.

did they use the same site i visited and got my downloads from?

it was a quick in and out. i was listening to my files within 5 minutes of having

discovered the site was even there.

the songs were prices very reasonably, the quality is good enough for me and

the site is transparant and to the point.

what more could anyone want?

there's people asking the same questions, posting about the same problems
over and over again when the answer has already been posted, sometimes

on the exact same page. they just don't bother reading the threads. or even

visit their junk folder, or read the darn webpage where the downloads are a

few centimeters under the apparant 'problem'.

what is it about new prince music and sites that makes people just loose their

minds?

lol

i don't think so lol i refuse to believe that all these people are idiots.

they're not.

but a lot of people seem to be lazy, or just unwilling to read the print

before they sign their name.

80% of the questions asked in those kind of threads revolve around

matters that are explained in the first 2 pages. the rest is usually an

obvious solution already made clear on the initial website or in the

emails people receive.

that's not stupidity, that's just being lazy.

the remaining comments are of a more negative nature, which once

again has nothing to do with stupidity but just a need to be difficult,

for the sake of being difficult.

people getting angry that they can't download the files 17 times to

all these high tech devices they supposedly have on which they all

there's a thread going on 20 pages right now, about a new site and

Concur....I'm sure Prince/camp expected some discontentment (nothing new), and for those that are being negative just for the sake of it, I'm sure he's probably immune to that by now.
