prince fans have given up the fight

prince taught me idealism. what i want to say here is not controversial but merely soul searching. i've been a member here since donkey's years. i comment only sporadically, when i want to. i feel sad that we have given in to prince fundamentalism. we believed too much in rights, press releases and casual modern age restrictions. when i bought prince's dirty mind lp, this guy was about freedom. then he became so big we lost him. this site should be about links, posters, videos, flowers, personal photos, torrents. but we can't. we're like, ooh, prince will close us down. our love for him is unconditional. we can't go against him as an institution. this thought process has been the death of so many sites like housequake. i'm a real prince fan, not a rock fan or soul or pop fan. i love his music. prince isn't so big now, but he's still ours. he's still a genius. he might not know it. that's fine. can't we fight these restrictions? is it so scary for someone to post moonbeam levels here? if it is, we dont deserve to be prince acolytes, and i'm a fan. this guy we will be keeping alive for the next 1000 years, even when this site is gone. even when we are gone. we must exchange stuff and defy him, and modern corporate laws, or we're not prince fans. what are we doing to remember him by? are we doing enough as a global community? are we doing enough for his music? the answer is no.

Looking up online and those songs and videos are still being posted, and reposted once the PBI (Prince Bureau of Investigation) shuts them down.

P fans haven't given up the fight.

thanks for replying here. is that enough? are we really interacting in public like a true global democracy? are we spreading our personal favourites when it comes to the music? we aren't, actually, we know that. but we can and we used to. take a rain check, funky people. do more.

Hmmm... it'd help if he was writing magical songs like he used to!

Screwdriver, while I certainly enjoy it, certainly isn't in the same league as something as cool and odd as Dance On or Tambourine.

Times have changed - Prince has not when it comes to composing his music.

That aside, I still love listening to him play and introduce friends to new songs all the time.

It'd be nice if Prince started writing songs for the sake of writing songs again though.

but it's not about that. it's about how the music made us feel. could all of us convey that feeling to anyone, anyone else in our lifetimes?

The only fight is within you. Post moonbeam levels if you want...are you supposed to own it in the first place? If it is within your rights, why would the mods, Prince, or anyone else care?

Freedom requires some responsibility, no?

not about the mods. love your freedom/responsibility quote. have you shared your prince favorites, or is your favourite song a deep, personal feeling and you want to keep it that way? either way is right. either way is music for thought. hope someone understands what I want to say.

I think the original poster has some good points, but Prince is a musician not a political candidiate. His career isn't a crusade that fans should feel obligated to fight for. Prince has a lot of unorthodox business philospophies when it comes to the handling of his intellectual copyrights (his music, videos, images) and although I disagree with a lot of it, in the end it is his property. Is it really paying homage or honoring his legacy if Prince doesn't like how fans go about it.

To me it's pointless to "stay in the fight" for a multi-millionaire, that rebuffs these kind of ideas to promote his music by fans. His music will always be available to people who are interested to hear it.

Are you sure his music will always be available? That reminds me, I need to replace my hard copy of Emancipation.

no. not if we have to violate copyright and trademakr laws to do so. imo, it is prince's decision as to what becomes of his art. we do not 'owe' anyone anything in this regard

We would all love to have the freedom to express our fandom, but it's Prince who has placed the shackles on us (so much for Emancipation!!). He calls the shots, and he's brutal when it comes to controlling his artistic endeavours.

That's his right of course, I'm not denying that, but it's hard to understand why he'd want to hurt those who pay for his lifestyle.

Some say that artists get the fans they deserve. Prince has been fortunate so far.

It's up to Warner Bros and Prince to make his music available not the listeners.

No. This site should not be about links, videos, torrents--THAT thought process is what killed Housequake. They pushed, and got pushed back. I don't think anyone (except our Masterpiece-spouting friend, and I tend to think that's mostly irony anymore) has unconditional love for Prince, and it's not his "institution" status that prevents this site from going that ultimately dead-end route. Ben and the mods have rules in place to protect what the .org is; anyone who can turn their computer on can find sources for lots of links and unapproved materials. But those sites and the people who run them put themselves and their work at risk. Mostly, they just risk being dropped by their whatever service their on and having to move somewhere else, but worse could happen. If you think there's a gap in the Prince world online--you fill it. Set up your own site--take the risk yourself. But here, we need to respect the limits placed by the the people in charge here, so that we still have a place to come to talk and a community that's been here for quite a while (while I've just been posting a little while, I've been reading since the beginning).

funkyalien... see, the thing is.... here on earth we don't think like you... what may seem like a coherent observation on one planet, might come across as jibberish on another

it's cool for you to make an effort to cross boundaries and introduce us to your way of thinking, but i'm afraid in this case it hasn't worked particularly well... bravo for trying though

i think it's important to remember that even though you may be funky... you're still an alien... not that there's anything wrong with that

very true, housequake was great - and I think he just got jealous

this place he doesn't really give a crap about, since he now has Funkenberry (truly a genius move to get a fan to do all your press)
